What Kardashian wore to the 2023 Met Gala
The gala’s theme honored Karl Lagerfeld, and Kardashian said she chose pearls because she associated them with Lagerfeld and Chanel. In a red-carpet interview with Vogue, she explained: “I thought, what is more Karl? You know, the iconic Chanel pearls is what I always thought of.”
Roseberry translated that reference into a custom Schiaparelli couture outfit rather than a Chanel look. Schiaparelli’s description identifies a draped pearl skirt and top, paired with a molded blush satin corset and a bone-white éclair stole. The accessories included a choker, pearl-drop earrings and an articulated ring, incorporating crystals and unique baroque pearls. Vogue’s May 1, 2023 coverage also describes the pearl-heavy silhouette.
How many pearls and crystals were used?
Schiaparelli described the skirt and top as made with over 50,000 freshwater pearls and over 16,000 crystals. Vogue’s contemporaneous report rounded those totals to 50,000 pearls and 16,000 crystals. The house’s “over” wording is the more precise way to state the published figures; an exact count is not established.

Kardashian confirmed in the Vogue interview that the pearls were real, answering “They are.” Schiaparelli specifies that the garment’s pearls were freshwater pearls. The cited sources do not provide pearl grading or sourcing origin.
What went into making the look?
Schiaparelli said a dozen artisans spent over 1,000 hours creating the ensemble. The house’s account explains that each pearl strand was strung and draped to Kardashian’s body, a process Vogue also reported. These are the house’s reported production figures, not an independently documented time study.
