The 3% figure tied to the card is described as cash back on Square Bill Pay transactions, while Block’s confirmed Bitcoin initiative is a separate, seller-focused product for businesses using Square.
What the 3% figure actually refers to
An indexed August 11, 2026 Business Wire description of the Square Credit Card lists unlimited 3% cash back on Square Bill Pay transactions and 1.5% cash back on every other purchase. The description says rewards can be redeemed as a cash deposit into Square Savings, a statement credit, or free payment processing. It does not say either rate is paid in Bitcoin.

“Unlimited” describes the reported 3% Bill Pay rate; the description does not establish a Bitcoin reward, a Bitcoin conversion option for cardholders, or a separate cap. It also does not provide a published statistic quantifying any alleged 3% Bitcoin reward.

What Block has actually announced about Bitcoin
Block’s May 27, 2025 announcement said: “Block, Inc. today announced it will launch bitcoin payments on Square, marking a significant milestone in making bitcoin more accessible and usable.” The announcement describes a seller-facing rollout, not a new consumer-credit-card reward.
#1 Best Overall
Bitcoin Payments
Bitcoin Payments are designed to let eligible sellers accept Bitcoin through Square hardware. This concerns how a business collects payment at checkout; it does not turn a cardholder’s personal spending rewards into Bitcoin.
Bitcoin Conversions
Bitcoin Conversions are designed to let eligible sellers automatically convert a percentage of card sales into Bitcoin. The relevant card sales are the seller’s transactions, so this feature should not be confused with cash-back earned by someone using a Square Credit Card.

When is Square Bitcoin supposed to be available?
Block’s May 2025 announcement anticipated a rollout beginning in the second half of 2025 and availability to all eligible Square sellers in 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. Block’s October 2025 product framing described Square Bitcoin as an integrated Bitcoin payments and wallet solution for local businesses.

Who can use the confirmed Bitcoin features?
- Business sellers: The announced functions are built for eligible Square sellers and their payment flows.
- United States availability: Block’s later announcement says the functionality is unavailable to sellers outside the U.S.
- New York: Square’s disclosure says Square Bitcoin is not available in New York.
- Regulatory conditions: Availability may require regulatory approval and can vary by eligibility.
These restrictions do not establish that Square Credit Card users in any location receive Bitcoin rewards. They apply to the seller-facing Square Bitcoin service.
Important protection difference: Bitcoin is not an insured bank balance
Square’s disclosure warns that virtual-currency balances are not protected by FDIC, NCUA, or SIPC insurance. That warning matters if a seller holds Bitcoin through Square Bitcoin. It is another reason not to treat the announced wallet and conversion functions as equivalent to a cash-back balance or an insured deposit account.

How to check a claim before acting on it
- Identify the product. Determine whether the statement concerns the consumer Square Credit Card or Square Bitcoin for sellers.
- Check the reward denomination. The reported card terms say cash back; a Bitcoin reward would need an explicit card-program term.
- Check the transaction category. The stated 3% rate applies to Square Bill Pay, while other purchases are reported at 1.5%.
- Check the date and geography. Seller availability was announced subject to approvals, with U.S. and New York restrictions.
- Check the redemption and protections. Cash-back redemptions differ from holding virtual currency, which lacks FDIC, NCUA, and SIPC insurance.
Bottom line on the “3% back in Bitcoin” headline
The headline combines two separate Block/Square developments. The Square Credit Card description reports 3% cash back on Square Bill Pay and 1.5% on other purchases. Block’s Bitcoin announcement concerns eligible business sellers accepting Bitcoin or converting part of their card sales. Until Block or Square publishes explicit card terms paying rewards in Bitcoin, the claim that Square Credit Card holders will soon earn 3% back in Bitcoin should be treated as unconfirmed.
