What to Do First After Inheriting Money: A Step-by-Step Checklist

Identify each inherited asset, preserve its valuation and distribution records, and check account-specific tax and transfer rules before selling or withdrawing money.

Before you spend, sell, or withdraw anything, confirm exactly what you are inheriting, preserve the paperwork that establishes its value, and find out whether the asset has special tax or distribution rules. Cash, an inherited IRA, and inherited property are not interchangeable: each can require a different next step. This checklist focuses on U.S. federal rules; state tax and probate rules may also matter.

If you have only been told that you are a beneficiary, start by learning what is actually being transferred and who is managing the process. If you already have the assets, the same first steps still apply: identify each one, save its records, and check its rules before making a decision that may be difficult to reverse.

First, identify the assets and who is handling the estate

Ask the executor, administrator, trustee, or other person handling the transfer for a written account of what you are due to receive and how each asset will be distributed. If you are not sure who is administering the estate, ask the person who notified you of the inheritance to identify the responsible representative and explain how to contact them.

Request the distribution statement, a description of each asset, relevant account statements, information about how property was valued at the decedent’s death, and any beneficiary notices or tax forms already available. For investments or property, ask what records show the decedent’s ownership and cost basis. Keep copies of the responses as well as the original documents you receive.

  • Retirement account: Find out whether you are named as a beneficiary, what kind of account it is, and which institution holds it.
  • Property or investments: Identify what is being transferred, who holds title, and what valuation and ownership records are available.

These distinctions matter because the asset’s form can change what you need to do next. An estate distribution of cash is different from a distribution of an IRA, which may have its own beneficiary and payout rules. Receiving a house or investment also raises ownership and valuation questions before you can make an informed decision about keeping or selling it. Avoid treating a single total estate value as a substitute for an asset-by-asset list.

Do not treat a notice that you are a beneficiary as proof that every transfer is complete. If the amount, asset, entitlement, or administration process is unclear, ask the estate representative to explain it in writing. The IRS’s overview of estate administrator responsibilities describes the administrator’s federal tax role; questions about your legal entitlement or a disputed distribution may require a probate or estate attorney.

Second, preserve records before making hard-to-reverse decisions

Set up a secure place to keep the estate’s distribution documents, account statements, valuation materials, tax forms, and correspondence. Keep records for each asset together. If you later sell property, report a retirement distribution, or need to explain how an asset was valued, these documents can help establish what happened and when.

For inherited property, the federal tax basis is generally tied to the property’s fair market value on the date of the decedent’s death. An estate may elect an alternate valuation date in circumstances covered by IRS rules. If certain estate-tax reporting applies, a beneficiary may also be required to use a basis consistent with the value reported to the IRS. These are not interchangeable assumptions: ask for the valuation and any relevant estate-tax information rather than estimating a basis from memory. See IRS Publication 551, Basis of Assets, and the Instructions for Form 8971 and Schedule A.

In practical terms, keep the valuation itself and the records that explain how it was determined. Also retain any information the estate provides about the decedent’s basis and whether an alternate valuation election or estate-tax reporting is relevant. Do not assume that the decedent’s original purchase price is necessarily the basis you should use, or that a number mentioned informally is the value the estate reported. If values in different documents do not match, ask the estate representative which figure applies and whether there is supporting documentation.

Before you sign a sale contract, transfer an investment, or dispose of property, make sure you know what records you have and whether the transaction could create a tax-reporting question. If paperwork is missing, ask the estate representative, custodian, or other record holder for it before proceeding where possible. Keep distribution dates and account statements with the paperwork: they help distinguish what you received from income or proceeds that arise later.

Third, identify the tax question for each asset

The general federal rule is that most gifts and inheritances are not included in the recipient’s gross income. That does not mean every asset or later transaction is tax-free. A retirement-account distribution may be taxable, and selling inherited property may create a reportable gain or loss based in part on its tax basis. The IRS explains the general rule and its limits in its Gifts & inheritances FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate the questions instead of asking only, “Is my inheritance taxable?” For each asset, ask whether receiving it is income, whether taking money out creates taxable income, whether later earnings are taxable, and whether a sale has tax consequences. Federal guidance does not settle every state inheritance, estate, or income-tax question, so check whether your state’s rules apply to your circumstances.

  • Cash or a bank balance: Receiving inherited cash generally is not itself federal gross income under the broad IRS rule, but interest earned after the transfer is a separate issue.
  • Traditional inherited IRA: A distribution can be taxable. Confirm the rules for your beneficiary category and account before requesting a payout.
  • Property: Establish basis and compare it with the eventual sale proceeds before assuming that a sale has no tax effect.

Think about the timing of the tax question, not just the asset label. The inheritance itself, a later withdrawal from an inherited retirement account, earnings on cash after it is transferred, and proceeds from selling property are separate events. A broad statement that an inheritance is not generally included in gross income does not answer whether a particular payout or transaction must be reported.

Do not rely on a general statement about inheritances to decide whether a particular withdrawal or sale must be reported. The asset type, your relationship to the decedent, dates, and the estate’s reporting can change the answer. If the question involves state tax, ask a qualified professional or consult the relevant state guidance; federal IRS guidance alone does not resolve state inheritance, estate, or income taxes.

Fourth, contact the IRA custodian before taking money out

An inherited IRA needs its own plan. Contact the financial institution holding the account and ask how it must be titled, what beneficiary category it has recorded for you, what type of IRA it is, and what distribution rules apply. A spouse beneficiary and a beneficiary who is not a spouse may have different options; a traditional inherited IRA is not the same as a Roth IRA or an ordinary inherited bank account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before authorizing a withdrawal, request a clear explanation of the timing requirements and tax treatment that apply to your facts. A traditional inherited IRA payout can be taxable, and the timing and available choices depend on beneficiary status and other details. Do not assume that you can treat the account as your own IRA, that you can leave it untouched indefinitely, or that one deadline applies to every inherited account.

When you call, keep the questions concrete. Confirm that the custodian has recorded you as the beneficiary and ask what documents it needs to verify that status. Ask whether the account is traditional or Roth, how it should be titled as an inherited account, which beneficiary category applies, and what distribution requirements and deadlines are associated with that category. Ask for the response in writing, especially if you are being asked to make an election or authorize a distribution. The point is not to select an option based on a generic deadline; it is to identify the rule that matches your relationship to the account holder, account type, and other relevant facts.

  1. Call the custodian using contact information from a statement or its official website.
  2. Tell the custodian that the account holder has died and ask what documents it needs to verify your beneficiary status.
  3. Ask for written instructions on account titling, distribution requirements, available choices, and any deadlines that apply to your beneficiary category.
  4. Before choosing a payout, discuss the tax consequences with a qualified tax professional if the rules or your options are unclear.

For federal guidance, consult IRS Publication 590-B, Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements, Publication 590-A, Contributions to Individual Retirement Arrangements, and Publication 559, Survivors, Executors, and Administrators. The relevant rule cannot be selected from the account label alone; the custodian and, when needed, a tax professional can help identify which guidance fits your circumstances.

Fifth, decide what to do with inherited property only after checking basis and costs

If you inherit a house, land, or another asset, first establish who owns it after the transfer, what it was worth for tax purposes, and what records support that value. The general federal starting point for inherited-property basis is fair market value on the date of death, subject to allowed alternatives and exceptions. An alternate valuation date may apply when the estate makes that election; where consistent-basis reporting rules apply, the beneficiary may need to use the estate-reported value.

Before selling, gather the valuation records and compare the property’s basis with the proceeds and other relevant sale information. Do not assume the original purchase price paid by the decedent is your basis, or assume that the inherited status alone makes a later sale tax-free. The specific reporting result depends on the facts and applicable tax rules.

Tax is only one part of the decision. Confirm who is responsible for ongoing expenses and obligations while you decide what to do, such as insurance, maintenance, or other holding costs that apply to the property. If you share ownership with other beneficiaries, clarify who can approve a sale or manage the asset before committing to a course of action. When the valuation, ownership, or potential tax reporting is unclear, pause and obtain qualified legal or tax advice rather than guessing.

A useful comparison is to consider the property’s tax records, liquidity, and carrying costs together. A property is not immediately interchangeable with cash: while you are deciding whether to keep or sell it, there may be ongoing expenses, and shared ownership can mean that another beneficiary’s role needs clarification. Establish who owns the asset and who is responsible for costs before making commitments. Then get the valuation and basis information needed to evaluate a possible sale. This is not a recommendation to sell or hold; it is a way to avoid deciding without knowing the relevant facts.

Sixth, protect inherited cash held at a bank

If you place inherited cash in a bank, verify that the institution is FDIC-insured and that the specific product is an eligible deposit. The FDIC’s standard insurance limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. That is a coverage limit, not a separate allowance for every account you open at the same bank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eligible deposit products include checking and savings accounts, money-market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit. Stocks, mutual funds, and annuities are investment products, not FDIC-insured deposits. Do not infer that an investment is covered just because it was purchased through a bank or appears alongside deposit accounts on a statement.

Coverage depends on the bank, account ownership category, and titling. Multiple accounts in the same ownership category at one insured bank may be aggregated when the FDIC determines coverage. If a distribution puts a large balance in one place, check the rules and how the accounts are titled before relying on separate account balances as separate coverage. The FDIC provides details in its Deposit Insurance FAQs and its guide to deposit products insured by the FDIC.

Use the FDIC limit as a prompt to check your actual coverage, not as a guarantee that every dollar in a bank-related account is insured. The relevant questions are whether the institution is insured, whether the holding is an eligible deposit rather than an investment product, and how the account is owned and titled. Two accounts at one bank are not automatically covered as two separate balances if they fall within the same ownership category. If the inheritance is larger than the amount you expect to be covered, verify the treatment of your particular accounts with the FDIC’s guidance rather than assuming that opening another account at the same bank changes the calculation.

Seventh, bring in professional help for questions that depend on your facts

A tax professional may be useful when you need to evaluate inherited IRA distributions, determine or document basis, or report a property sale. A probate or estate attorney may be useful if you do not understand your entitlement, the distribution is disputed, or you need help with estate administration. The right professional depends on the issue; one adviser may not be qualified to resolve every tax, investment, and legal question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before engaging someone, verify their qualifications and understand the scope of the work and fees. If a professional is recommended through a referral, ask whether there is a referral relationship. Do not hand over account access or sign transfer paperwork simply because someone offers to manage the inheritance.

It can help to organize the question before a consultation. For a tax discussion, bring the distribution statement, account or property records, valuation documents, and any tax forms or beneficiary notices you have. For a legal question, explain what you were told you would receive, what has actually been transferred, and what remains unclear or disputed. Ask what the professional will address, what information is still needed, and what the work will cost. This helps keep the advice focused on the issue at hand, without assuming that one professional can resolve every aspect of an inheritance.

A practical order of operations

  1. Get the inventory and administrator’s contact details. Identify each asset and determine whether it has actually been distributed.
  2. Save the supporting records. Keep statements, distribution paperwork, valuations, basis information, and tax documents before selling or withdrawing assets.
  3. Flag assets with special rules. Contact the IRA custodian promptly about inherited retirement assets; establish ownership and valuation details for property.
  4. Check the tax consequences of the action you plan to take. Distinguish receiving an inheritance from later distributions, earnings, and sales.
  5. Review deposit protection if the inheritance is cash. Check the bank’s insured status, eligible product, ownership category, and how balances are aggregated.
  6. Get tailored professional advice where the answer turns on facts you do not know. Use a tax professional for tax questions and an estate or probate attorney for legal and administration issues.

There is no single deadline or investment decision that applies to every inheritance. The sensible first move is to understand what you received and preserve the information needed to make the next decision deliberately.

As you work through the checklist, keep the decisions in order: establish what you are entitled to receive, document what was transferred and how it was valued, identify any asset-specific rule, then evaluate the tax and protection questions before acting. A cash balance, an inherited retirement account, and property each call for different checks. Taking time to identify those differences is more useful than treating the entire inheritance as one undifferentiated sum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay federal income tax just because I inherited money?

Usually, receiving an inheritance is not itself included in federal gross income under the IRS’s general rule. That does not mean every later transaction is tax-free: traditional inherited IRA distributions can be taxable, interest earned after receiving cash is separate income, and a sale of inherited property may have tax consequences. State rules may also differ.

What should I ask the executor or estate representative for first?

Ask for a written distribution statement, an asset-by-asset description, relevant account statements, valuation information, and any available beneficiary notices or tax forms. For property or investments, request records about ownership, basis, and the value used by the estate. Also confirm which assets have actually been distributed and who is handling any remaining steps.

Should I withdraw money from an inherited IRA right away?

Do not assume a single deadline or payout rule applies. Contact the custodian to confirm the account type, your recorded beneficiary category, required titling, distribution rules, and any deadlines. Traditional inherited IRA distributions can be taxable, and options vary with beneficiary status and other facts. Get tax advice if the applicable rule or tax effect is unclear.

How is the basis of inherited property determined?

The general federal rule ties basis to fair market value on the decedent’s date of death, but an allowed alternate valuation date or consistent-basis reporting rules may apply. Keep the estate’s valuation and related tax records, and do not substitute the decedent’s original purchase price or an informal estimate without checking which value applies.

Is inherited cash automatically FDIC-insured?

No. FDIC coverage applies to eligible deposits at insured banks, subject to the standard limit of $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Checking, savings, money-market deposit accounts, and CDs are eligible deposit products; stocks, mutual funds, and annuities are not. Account ownership and titling affect how balances are counted.

The Bottom Line

Start by confirming each asset and preserving the records that establish its transfer and value. Then check the rules for the specific action you are considering: an inherited IRA withdrawal, property sale, or cash deposit can raise different questions. Most inheritances are not themselves federal gross income, but later distributions, earnings, and sales may have tax consequences. Verify FDIC coverage for eligible bank deposits, and get qualified tax or legal help when your facts or entitlement are unclear.
