JSX’s ATR plans do not mean it firmly ordered 15 ATR 42-600s. ATR announced in June 2025 that JSX planned to lease two ATR 42-600s and had signed a letter of intent covering 15+10 aircraft, with the possible aircraft mix including ATR 42-600s or ATR 72-600s. ATR later reported that JSX began operating its first ATR 42-600 in December 2025 and planned four in early 2026. Those are manufacturer announcements, not confirmation of JSX’s fleet status today. If you want to fly one, that is a pilot-career path; launching an air carrier is an entirely separate company-level process.
What does JSX’s 15+10 ATR announcement mean?
ATR’s June 18, 2025, Paris Air Show announcement described two different commitments. JSX planned to lease two ATR 42-600s, configured with 30 premium seats and supported by an ATR Global Maintenance Agreement. Separately, the companies announced a letter of intent for 15+10 ATR HighLine aircraft. Those aircraft could be ATR 42-600s with 30 premium seats or all-business-class ATR 72-600s with 30 seats.
A letter of intent is not evidence that 25 aircraft were delivered, nor does this announcement establish a firm order for 15 ATR 42-600s specifically. ATR’s January 13, 2026, update reported a later milestone: JSX had begun operating its first ATR 42-600 in December 2025 and planned to operate four in early 2026, each with 30 premium seats. The two announcements differ in timing and scope, so they should not be combined into a claim that JSX had already taken delivery of a particular number of aircraft.
What ATR reported about JSX in January 2026
In that update, ATR said JSX served 29 airports in the United States and Mexico with 51 Embraer jets and two ATR turboprops. These figures are a snapshot reported by ATR on January 13, 2026—not a verified live fleet or network count for October 2026. ATR also quoted JSX CEO Alex Wilcox saying the aircraft would enable JSX to expand its service to more airports while maintaining its premium experience. That is the company’s stated rationale, not independent evidence of operating performance or future expansion.

How do I become an ATR pilot at JSX?
To fly an ATR for JSX, you would apply for a pilot position, meet the applicable FAA and employer requirements for that seat, and complete any selection and aircraft-specific training required if hired. The aircraft announcement is not a hiring notice, and it does not establish how many pilots JSX will recruit.
- Earn the certificates and ratings for your intended role. The required credentials depend on the position and aircraft. FAA guidance describes ATP certification pathways, including training requirements for certain applicants seeking an ATP with an airplane multiengine class rating or an ATP issued concurrently with a type rating when an ATP is required by rule.
- Build the experience required by FAA rules and the job. FAA rules and an employer’s minimum qualifications are separate considerations. FAA guidance also describes restricted-privileges ATP certificates for eligible graduates of specified aviation degree programs; those certificates can permit co-pilot service before reaching 1,500 flight hours. Eligibility and privileges depend on the applicable requirements.
- Check JSX’s current vacancies. JSX has advertised an “ATR Quick Upgrade Captain – Las Vegas” role. The available listing states that applicants need an FAA pilot certificate appropriate to their aircraft and position and must comply with FAA regulations and JSX procedures. The listing text available for review did not establish its exact flight-hour minimum, prior ATR experience requirement, type-rating requirement, compensation, or upgrade conditions. Use the live JSX careers listing for current qualifications and terms.
- Complete the employer’s process and required aircraft training if selected. The specific training, qualification and upgrade pathway will depend on JSX’s current position requirements and applicable FAA rules. The public announcements do not provide a fixed training timeline.
FAA ATP guidance explains general certification routes; it does not set JSX’s hiring thresholds. The current vacancy is the relevant source for the job’s specific requirements, and those details can change.

What qualifications do I need to fly an ATR 42?
There is no single qualification answer that applies to every ATR 42 pilot job. Your required certificates, ratings, experience and training depend on the seat, applicable regulations and the operator’s requirements. The FAA’s ATP Certification Training Program applies to applicants seeking an ATP certificate with an airplane multiengine class rating, or an ATP issued concurrently with a type rating when an ATP is required by rule. The FAA also provides restricted-privileges ATP pathways for eligible graduates of specified aviation degree programs.
These FAA pathways do not tell you whether a particular JSX job requires a type rating, a certain number of hours, prior ATR experience, or a particular upgrade history. The readable JSX listing information does not establish those details. Check the live vacancy rather than treating a broad certification pathway—or the ATR aircraft announcement—as a statement of JSX’s current minimums.

Does JSX have ATR captain jobs?
JSX has advertised an “ATR Quick Upgrade Captain – Las Vegas” vacancy. That establishes that such a role has been advertised, but the information available here does not establish whether it remains open or provide a complete, verifiable list of its qualifications, pay or upgrade conditions. Check JSX’s current careers page for the live posting and application details.
Is the ATR 42-600 FAA certified?
ATR has stated that FAA certification for the ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600 enables the models to enter service in countries that require FAA rather than EASA certification. That establishes the models’ U.S. certification context according to the manufacturer. It does not by itself confirm that a particular aircraft, operator, route or cabin configuration has met every applicable airworthiness and operational requirement.

How is becoming a pilot different from becoming an air operator?
A pilot applies as an individual and must meet airman-certification rules and an employer’s position requirements. Starting an air carrier is a company-level certification and business process. FAA materials on Part 135 identify requirements that can include a principal base of operation, exclusive use of at least one suitable aircraft, aircraft conformity and maintenance compliance, management personnel, manuals, insurance and applicable economic authority. The requirements depend on the kind and scope of operation; this list is not a complete startup checklist.
| Path | Who applies | What the process concerns | Evidence to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly for JSX | An individual pilot | FAA certificates and ratings, applicable flight experience, employer selection and any required aircraft-specific training | The current JSX vacancy and relevant FAA certification guidance |
| Start an air carrier | A company or prospective operator | FAA certification and applicable DOT economic authority, along with aircraft, facilities, management, manuals, maintenance and insurance requirements | The FAA’s live certification guidance and requirements for the proposed operation |
The FAA says initial Part 135 applications transitioned to Aviation Integrated Safety Services beginning September 30, 2026. Prospective applicants should use the FAA’s current certification guidance and AIS Services because application procedures and requirements depend on the operation.

What to take from JSX’s ATR program
- ATR’s June 2025 announcement described two planned leased ATR 42-600s and a separate 15+10 letter of intent permitting a mix of ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600 aircraft.
- ATR reported in January 2026 that JSX’s first ATR 42-600 entered service in December 2025 and that JSX planned four in early 2026; the update is not a verified fleet count for October 2026.
- A JSX pilot opportunity and the launch of a separate air carrier are different goals, with different applicants, authorities and requirements.
- FAA certification of the aircraft models does not replace position-specific pilot qualifications or aircraft- and operator-specific approvals.
