The American linked with buying Sheffield Wednesday in a September 2025 report was businessman John Textor, but he did not complete the takeover. The reported windfall was also not £190m: BBC Sport quoted football finance expert Kieran Maguire describing £180m from Textor’s sale of his Crystal Palace shares. On 2 May 2026, Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover was completed by a different American-led consortium, ending Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
Who was the American linked with Sheffield Wednesday?
BBC Sport reported on 3 September 2025 that Textor was interested in buying or partnering with a traditional English club, and linked that interest to Sheffield Wednesday. The report described interest, not an accepted offer or completed purchase. The available evidence therefore identifies Textor as the likely subject of the headline, rather than establishing that he made a successful bid for Wednesday. BBC Sport’s September 2025 report covered the takeover discussions and financial context.
Was the windfall £190m?
The source supporting the windfall claim gives a different figure. BBC Sport quoted Maguire saying Textor had £180m following the sale of his Crystal Palace shares. That is an attributed estimate reported in September 2025; the source reviewed does not verify a £190m cash windfall. It should not be treated as Wednesday-specific funding or proof that Textor had committed money to a takeover.
What happened to Chansiri’s sale plans?
Chansiri bought Sheffield Wednesday in 2015 for a reported £37.5m. His willingness to sell was not new: at a 2018 fans’ forum, he said he would put the club on the market. BBC Sport reported in December 2018 that he had done so. The 2018 report documents that earlier sale announcement.

The offers and valuation reported in 2025
In September 2025, BBC Sport reported Chansiri’s account that he had rejected two offers made earlier that summer: one reportedly worth £40m and another from a US-based group at £30m. Those were his reported descriptions of the offers, not confirmed final terms. The same article said Chansiri was understood to value the club at about £100m, while Maguire estimated £40m–£50m, citing typical EFL revenue multiples and the fact that Wednesday did not own its stadium. Maguire’s range was an expert estimate, not a formal valuation.
The figures are not directly interchangeable: they refer to different things and dates, and the reports do not establish that any of the 2025 offers became the eventual sale. The Independent’s 2 May 2026 takeover report did not disclose the completed deal price, so it cannot be compared reliably with the earlier valuation or bids.

Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?
On 2 May 2026, The Independent reported that a consortium led by American businessman David Storch, through Arise Capital Partners, completed Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover and ended Chansiri’s ownership. That makes Storch’s consortium—not Textor—the buyer identified in the reported completed transaction. The report did not state the sale price or detailed transaction terms. The Independent’s takeover report gives the completion date and buyer.
Storch said Wednesday deserved “stability, ambition and a clear direction”; that was the incoming consortium leader’s stated aim, not a guarantee of future results. The Independent also reported that the EFL did not impose a further 15-point penalty after earlier 12- and six-point deductions, and that budget restrictions would continue for the following two seasons under a business plan. Those are details reported on 2 May 2026, not confirmation of the club’s position after that date.

Why Hillsborough mattered to the club’s finances
Sheffield Wednesday’s stadium ownership is relevant to the older valuation discussion, but the accounting figures belong to a specific historical period. BBC Sport reported in July 2019 that Hillsborough had been sold to Chansiri for about £60m. For 2017–18, the transaction generated a profit above £38m for Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited and helped the club report a £2.5m pre-tax profit; BBC Sport said that without the sale the club would have reported a £35.4m pre-tax loss. These are historical reported figures, not a picture of current accounts. BBC Sport’s 2019 account of the Hillsborough transaction explains its effect on that year’s results.
In September 2025, BBC Sport also reported late HMRC payments, unpaid transfer fees, delayed salaries, an EFL investigation into those matters and an embargo on permanent signings. Those details describe the situation reported at that time; they should not be assumed to remain current after the takeover.
