No. Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover was completed by Arise Capital Partners on 2 May 2026, not Mike Ashley. The deal ended Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership and brought the club out of administration. The available official and BBC reports do not establish whether Ashley made a formal bid, so claims about his bid status or terms cannot be confirmed from those reports.
Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?
The documented buyer is the Arise Capital Partners consortium. In its statement on 2 May 2026, the English Football League (EFL) named David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin as consortium members and confirmed that the club was no longer in administration. BBC Sport reported that the acquisition formally ended Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
The EFL’s announcement described the transaction as an agreement to transfer the club’s assets. The available reports do not provide a sale price, so no valuation should be inferred from the completion announcement.
What is known about Mike Ashley’s role?
The reports establishing the completed sale do not say that Mike Ashley bought the club, and the available material does not establish whether he submitted a formal bid, what its terms might have been, or his precise status in the sale process. It would therefore be inaccurate to report that he bid, was outbid or withdrew as a confirmed fact on this evidence.

The distinction matters: a headline saying Ashley was “backed to strike” a takeover describes an expectation or claim, not proof that a transaction took place. The completed acquisition and the identity of its buyer are established separately by the EFL and BBC Sport.
How the sale process reached completion
| Date | What happened | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 24 October 2025 | The EFL said Dejphon Chansiri had taken steps to appoint administrators to Sheffield Wednesday FC and the company that owns Hillsborough. | Administration triggered an automatic 12-point deduction and opened the possibility of a sale under new ownership. |
| 6 January 2026 | BBC Sport reported that a consortium led by James Bord and Felix Romer had been selected as preferred bidder; Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil was identified as its chief executive. | This was an interim preferred-bidder position, not the eventual acquisition. |
| 22–25 February 2026 | BBC Sport reported Wednesday’s relegation to League One on 22 February and the collapse of the Bord-led takeover attempt three days later. | David Storch’s group, which had not been selected as preferred bidder, returned to the process. |
| 2 May 2026 | The EFL announced that administrators had completed an agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC to transfer the club’s assets. BBC Sport reported that the consortium had bought the club. | The acquisition ended Chansiri’s ownership and the club’s administration. |
What restrictions applied after the takeover?
The EFL said the club faced budget restrictions for two seasons after the acquisition. BBC Sport reported that new player registrations were still permitted in accordance with the agreed business plan. That is a restricted route to registering players, not an unrestricted transfer budget.

What EFL approval rules apply to ownership changes?
The EFL’s current acquisition guidance says a change of control is subject to EFL and Independent Football Regulator (IFR) requirements. The EFL says its Owners’ and Directors’ Suitability and Eligibility (ODSE) regime began on 5 May 2026, and that IFR approval is required before a person becomes an owner or takes a specified senior role. These requirements are relevant to future ownership changes; they do not alter who completed the May 2026 acquisition.
