John McEvoy was reported as a potential buyer of Sheffield Wednesday in late 2025, but he did not become the club’s owner. The sale was completed in May 2026 to Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch with Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The description of McEvoy as an “American billionaire” comes from media coverage; the sources reviewed do not independently verify his net worth or provide a comprehensive, primary-source account of his businesses.

Who is John McEvoy?

Media reports in October and December 2025 described McEvoy as a possible investor in Sheffield Wednesday. A November 2025 profile characterized him as a US-based entrepreneur and investor and attributed interests in mobile-device distribution, sports and talent management to him. Sports Business Journal also relayed Telegraph reporting about a mobile-device distribution business and minority stakes in the Nashville Predators and Colorado Rockies. These are reported biographical claims, not a verified account of his holdings.

The sources reviewed do not establish a reliable net-worth figure for McEvoy, so “billionaire” should be treated as a media description rather than a confirmed financial fact. No on-record statement from McEvoy confirming a bid appears in those sources.

Was McEvoy trying to buy Sheffield Wednesday?

He was reported as a potential bidder, not announced by the club, its administrators or the league as a confirmed purchaser. On 29 October 2025, Sports Business Journal relayed Telegraph reporting that McEvoy was among leading candidates and had considered a bid. On 6 December, BBC Sport reported that McEvoy and members of the Storch family were reportedly considering a joint bid. That report also noted the scale of investment needed at Hillsborough and the club’s training ground.

Those reports establish reported interest and possible discussions, not that a McEvoy-led group submitted or completed the successful bid. The reported McEvoy–Storch pairing did not become the club’s final ownership group.

How the takeover unfolded

Date What was reported or confirmed Status and source
28–29 October 2025 McEvoy was reported as a possible bidder. Media report relaying Telegraph coverage; not an official bid announcement. Sports Business Journal.
6 December 2025 McEvoy and members of the Storch family were reportedly considering a joint bid. BBC report of possible discussions, not a completed bid. BBC Sport.
6 January 2026 A consortium led by James Bord and Felix Romer was reported as the preferred bidder. An interim preferred-bidder stage, not the eventual sale. BBC Sport.
2 May 2026 The EFL confirmed an agreement transferring the club’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. League confirmation; the club met relevant requirements and exited administration. EFL.
5 May 2026 The joint administrators announced completion of the sale to Arise Capital Partners LLC. Administrator completion notice. BTG.

Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?

The completed purchaser was Arise Capital Partners LLC, not McEvoy. The EFL’s 2 May 2026 announcement identified the group as led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin; BTG confirmed the completed sale on 5 May. David Storch said on behalf of Arise: “Sheffield Wednesday deserves stability, ambition and a clear direction. That is what we are here to deliver.”

The distinction between reported interest, preferred-bidder status and a completed sale matters: the January 2026 preferred-bidder report concerned a different consortium, while the final transaction was completed by Arise.

What the sale meant for the club

The EFL said Sheffield Wednesday would be subject to a budget restriction for two seasons, while allowing player registrations under the jointly agreed business plan. BTG said the EFL decided not to impose the prospective 15-point deduction after the club exited administration. These are conditions of the club’s sale and administration outcome, not evidence about McEvoy’s finances or involvement in the final ownership group.
