DePuy began in 1895 as an orthopaedic-device company known for fitted splints. Johnson & Johnson (J&J) acquired it in 1998, combined it with Synthes in 2012, and announced in October 2025 that it intends to separate the Orthopaedics business as a standalone company operating as DePuy Synthes. That separation is planned, not completed: J&J set an 18-to-24-month target window and made the transaction subject to approvals and other conditions.
How DePuy began as an orthopaedic company
Revra DePuy founded the DePuy Manufacturing Company in 1895. J&J’s heritage timeline describes it as the world’s first orthopaedics company and says it made fitted splints for fractured limbs. When Johnson & Johnson acquired DePuy
J&J acquired DePuy in 1998 as part of its effort to expand its orthopaedics business. DePuy thereafter operated as a J&J orthopaedics franchise, with its scope growing through acquisitions and internally developed products.
A J&J 2006 annual report copy hosted by Scribd reports DePuy franchise sales of $4.105 billion for 2006 and describes activity in areas including spine and sports medicine. What DePuy Synthes includes
J&J completed its acquisition of Synthes on June 14, 2012, and said Synthes would be integrated with the DePuy franchise to form the DePuy Synthes Companies of Johnson & Johnson. This widened the business beyond a single device category. J&J’s heritage timeline identifies joint reconstruction, trauma response, sports medicine and facial fracture repair; the 2006 report also discusses hip and spine offerings. At the time, J&J CEO Alex Gorsky said the combination would help the companies “better serve clinicians and patients worldwide” and bring innovations to orthopaedics and neurologics. That was J&J’s stated rationale for the deal, not an independent assessment of clinical outcomes.

What J&J announced in 2025
On October 14, 2025, J&J announced its intent to separate its Orthopaedics business as a standalone company operating as DePuy Synthes. The company targeted completion within 18 to 24 months of the announcement. J&J said the plan is subject to employee-representative consultations where required, final board approval, regulatory approvals and other conditions. The announcement establishes an intention and target, not that the separation has occurred. J&J’s October 14, 2025 announcement
J&J described the Orthopaedics business as having approximately $9.2 billion in fiscal 2024 sales. It also estimated that the planned business serves approximately seven million patients annually and characterized its global market opportunity as more than $50 billion. These are J&J-published figures and framing from the separation announcement, not independent market estimates.
