John Deere’s available announcements do not verify an $18.5 million commitment to strengthen the U.S. food system. They document two distinct efforts: a $19 million global grant series announced by the John Deere Foundation in 2023, and a separate $6.6 million, three-year unrestricted commitment to Feeding America described in Deere’s 2024 Business Impact Report.
What Deere’s announcements establish
The closest match to the reported $18.5 million figure is the John Deere Foundation’s October 26, 2023 announcement of $19 million in grants. The Foundation named three recipients: World Food Program USA, One Acre Fund, and The Nature Conservancy. It described the grants as supporting hunger reduction and global food systems, including food access and resource-constrained farmers—not as a single $18.5 million U.S.-wide commitment. John Deere’s 2023 announcement called them the three largest grants in the Foundation’s history at that point.

A separate Deere initiative is explicitly connected to U.S. food relief: the company’s 2024 Business Impact Report describes a $6.6 million unrestricted commitment to Feeding America over three years. The report also says Farmlink is working with Feeding America to supply rescued food through its network. This is distinct from the 2023 grant series; the reported amounts should not be combined into a single commitment without evidence that they are part of the same program. What the 2023 grants were intended to support
World Food Program USA
World Food Program USA, one of the grant recipients, said its share was $5 million to strengthen the capacity of the UN World Food Programme. That amount is the recipient’s account of its grant, not the total for all three grants. World Food Program USA’s announcement

One Acre Fund
In the same recipient announcement, One Acre Fund Managing Director Matthew Forti said the grant was expected to help support more than 750,000 farm families across sub-Saharan Africa over five years and unlock nearly $65 million in new farmer profits and assets. These are Forti’s projected impacts, not reported outcomes already achieved. He said the expected gains would come through increased food-crop, cash-crop, and agroforestry productivity. The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy was named as the third recipient of the $19 million series. The available announcement identifies it as a recipient but does not provide an individual grant amount here, so the total should not be divided among the three organizations by assumption. What is known—and not known—about food relief in the United States
Deere’s community information describes food and nutrition work involving farmers, food banks, local food-bank collaboration, and the Global FoodBanking Network. Its 2024 report gives the clearest specific U.S.-oriented figure in the available material: the $6.6 million, three-year unrestricted Feeding America commitment, alongside food rescue routed through Feeding America’s network. How to read the headline figure
- The verified 2023 figure is $19 million for three grants, with global food-system framing.
- The verified Feeding America figure is $6.6 million over three years, documented separately in Deere’s 2024 report.
- The $5 million figure is World Food Program USA’s reported grant amount within the 2023 series.
- The 750,000-family and nearly $65 million figures are a grant recipient executive’s five-year projections, not measured results.
Because these amounts refer to different announcements, recipients, time frames, and scopes, they are not interchangeable. The available information supports reporting each commitment separately, rather than presenting $18.5 million as a confirmed U.S. food-system pledge.
