JetBlue’s Amazon Leo Wi-Fi Upgrade: What Passengers Should Know About the 2027 Rollout

JetBlue plans a phased Amazon Leo Wi‑Fi upgrade beginning in 2027. The service is intended to remain free, but aircraft, routes and passenger speeds are not yet specified.

JetBlue plans to begin installing Amazon’s satellite technology on part of its fleet in 2027, upgrading its existing complimentary Fly‑Fi service. The network was called Project Kuiper when the airlines announced the deal; Amazon renamed it Amazon Leo in November 2025. The upgrade is not yet operating on JetBlue flights, and the airline has not named the aircraft or routes that will get it first.

What JetBlue announced

On September 4, 2025, JetBlue became the first airline to announce an agreement to use Amazon’s low-Earth-orbit satellite network for inflight connectivity. JetBlue said installation would start on a portion of its fleet in 2027 and proceed in phases. The aim is to improve Fly‑Fi, which JetBlue says currently relies on geostationary satellites. JetBlue and Amazon described faster, more reliable connectivity as the goal, not as a performance result already measured in passenger service. JetBlue’s announcement

“First airline” refers to the first airline publicly announced as signing on with Amazon’s network. It does not mean JetBlue was the first airline to choose low-Earth-orbit connectivity generally, or that Amazon Leo service is already flying with JetBlue passengers. Amazon later announced Delta as another airline customer.

When will Amazon Leo Wi‑Fi be available on JetBlue?

JetBlue’s stated target is to begin installations in 2027, with a phased rollout on only part of the fleet at first. The announcement does not specify aircraft types, routes, installation dates, the number of aircraft in the initial phase, or when the full fleet might be equipped. It therefore does not support a claim that every JetBlue flight will have Amazon Leo in 2027.

Some secondary coverage reported that roughly 25% of the fleet would be included initially, with completion by 2028. That figure is not in JetBlue’s announcement, so it should be treated as a reported estimate rather than a confirmed JetBlue commitment. UPI’s report

Fly‑Fi remains JetBlue’s existing onboard service while any retrofit is phased in. Until JetBlue identifies equipped aircraft or provides a way to check them, passengers should not assume a particular flight has the new system. For current onboard information, consult JetBlue’s flying experience page.

Will JetBlue’s upgraded Wi‑Fi still be free?

Yes, the announcement says the Amazon-powered evolution of Fly‑Fi is intended to remain complimentary for JetBlue customers. That is the announced passenger proposition; it does not establish a speed guarantee, unlimited capacity for every application, or uninterrupted service on every flight. Price and performance are separate questions.

How Amazon Leo differs from JetBlue’s current system

JetBlue describes its current Fly‑Fi as using geostationary Earth-orbit (GEO) satellites. Amazon Leo uses low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. Amazon says its satellites operate about 590–630 kilometers (367–391 miles) above Earth. Their lower orbit can reduce the distance signals travel compared with GEO systems, which is why LEO connectivity is expected to have lower latency. That technical advantage alone does not determine what a passenger experiences: aircraft hardware, shared cabin demand, route, weather, satellite handoffs, and network backhaul also matter.

What does Amazon’s “up to 1 Gbps” claim mean?

Amazon says its aviation terminal is a full-duplex Ka-band phased-array antenna capable of download speeds of up to 1 Gbps on a single device. This is Amazon’s stated maximum terminal capability, not a promise that each passenger will receive 1 Gbps. Many passengers share the aircraft’s available satellite, terminal, and ground-network capacity, and Amazon and JetBlue have not published expected average passenger speeds, minimum speeds, latency targets, traffic-management rules, or streaming guarantees. How the JetBlue deal fits the airline Wi‑Fi market

Amazon renamed Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo on November 13, 2025. At the time of JetBlue’s announcement, Amazon was still building its satellite network; the constellation and service capacity are continuing to develop. JetBlue’s installation target therefore depends not only on aircraft integration but also on Amazon having enough network coverage and capacity for the service. JetBlue’s deal gives Amazon an airline customer as it competes in a field where Starlink already has an operational head start. The announcement should not be read as proof that Amazon Leo will outperform other providers; comparable JetBlue passenger data is not yet available. Delta also announced Amazon Leo service, with a rollout planned to start in 2028 on an initial 500 aircraft. Amazon says Delta’s Wi‑Fi will be free for SkyMiles members, a different eligibility condition from JetBlue’s announced complimentary Fly‑Fi. Amazon’s Delta announcement

What passengers should do before a flight

  • Check JetBlue’s current onboard Wi‑Fi information rather than assuming your aircraft has Amazon Leo.
  • Do not select a flight on the assumption that its aircraft will have the upgrade; JetBlue has not published an aircraft or route rollout list.
  • Download essential work files, entertainment, or travel documents before departure in case the connection is unavailable or unsuitable for your needs.
  • Do not buy satellite equipment or a separate Amazon plan expecting it to unlock JetBlue’s onboard Fly‑Fi; this is an airline-integrated service.

What remains unknown

  • Which aircraft types and routes will receive the first installations.
  • How many aircraft will be equipped in each phase and when the retrofit will be complete.
  • Typical passenger download and upload speeds, latency, and service consistency.
  • Whether particular applications, including streaming and VPNs, will be limited or perform differently.
  • How JetBlue will manage service across aircraft using different satellite systems, or during satellite handoffs.
