Neither booking directly nor using a credit card issuer’s travel portal is always better. Compare the same flight or hotel on both channels, then weigh the total price, rules, rewards, loyalty benefits and who will handle changes or refunds. A portal can be worthwhile when a benefit you can actually use outweighs any price or service trade-off; booking direct may suit travelers who prefer to deal with the airline or hotel themselves.
How to compare the two booking options
Start with identical travel details: for a flight, compare the same itinerary, cabin and fare rules; for a hotel, compare the same dates, room type and cancellation policy. A lower starting price may not be the lower-cost choice once taxes, fees, restrictions and rewards are considered.

When a credit card portal may be the better choice
A portal can make sense when its price is competitive and a qualifying card benefit or portal feature makes the overall value better for your trip. Count only benefits you qualify for and can use; a credit with conditions or an unfamiliar points balance is not automatically worth its face value.
Compare points by their value to you
Issuer multipliers are not a direct measure of savings. For example, Chase says eligible Sapphire Reserve cardmembers earn 4 points per dollar on eligible flights and hotels booked directly, and 8 points per dollar on eligible travel booked through Chase Travel, subject to card and benefit terms. Capital One says eligible Venture X cardholders earn 5 points per dollar on flights and 10 points per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. These issuer examples are not a like-for-like valuation of the points. Consider how you expect to redeem them and whether the portal price is still competitive. Check whether the portal perk applies to this booking
Some portals offer price tools, optional cancellation features or benefits tied to selected hotels. Capital One says users of its flight price prediction feature save an average of 15% on flights. That is Capital One’s company-reported average for eligible use of this particular feature, not an independent comparison of portal and direct prices or a promise of savings on an individual trip. Capital One’s feature and eligibility details should be checked before relying on it.
When booking directly may suit you better
Direct booking may be preferable if you value working with the airline or hotel rather than an intermediary, or if the provider’s own price, fare or room rules are better for your needs. It can also matter when the issuer’s portal bonus or credit does not apply, or when its terms make the booking less attractive. Direct is not a guarantee of the lowest price or easiest resolution; compare the actual terms for the trip.

Do portal bookings still earn airline miles or hotel points?
Sometimes. Do not assume that every portal booking forfeits provider loyalty benefits, but check the exact fare or property before booking and add your loyalty number where applicable.
Airline loyalty
Chase Travel says eligible portal-booked flights can earn airline rewards when the traveler adds a frequent-flyer number, though fare-class and route exclusions may apply. Capital One says airline points can accrue for portal bookings when an airline loyalty account is linked. Confirm eligibility for the specific ticket with the issuer and airline. Hotel loyalty
Hotel rewards and benefits vary by property and booking. Chase says select hotels booked through Chase Travel may qualify for hotel-program rewards and benefits, but not every property in a participating hotel group is eligible. Look for the property-level eligibility information in the portal and verify the terms before counting points, elite-night credit or status perks. Check your card’s terms, not just the portal’s
A portal booking is not always required to earn a card’s travel multiplier. For example, American Express says eligible Platinum Card members earn 5 points per dollar on flights purchased directly from airlines or through American Express Travel, subject to its stated annual purchase limit and terms. The issuer also describes select prepaid hotel credits and premium hotel programs tied to Amex Travel bookings. Check whether the benefit applies to the exact purchase before comparing channels. Rates, credits, eligible categories and participating properties can change. Before booking, review the current terms for your card and the specific trip rather than relying on a general multiplier or a benefit description from another card.

For U.S. airline tickets bought through an online travel agency or another ticket agent, the U.S. Department of Transportation says to contact the agent first about a ticket problem. The airline may have limited ability to assist because the ticket was not purchased directly from it. When a refund is due, the merchant of record shown on the payment statement is responsible for issuing it. DOT also says the airline 24-hour reservation and refund requirement does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies, travel agents or other third-party agents. These points concern U.S. airline tickets; they should not be treated as rules for hotel bookings or every international consumer-law situation. A quick decision process
- Match the product. Compare the same flight details or hotel room, dates, fare or rate rules, and cancellation terms.
- Compare the final amounts. Include taxes and fees, then account for only card credits and rewards you qualify for and expect to use.
- Verify loyalty eligibility. Check the fare or property’s rules and enter or link your airline or hotel loyalty details as required.
- Decide whether the service trade-off is acceptable. Check who to contact for changes, cancellations and refunds, and choose the channel whose terms and service arrangements work for you.
