October history offers context, not a forecast: META’s October return was positive in five of the 14 years from 2012 through 2025 and negative in nine. The average was about -2.78% using one published monthly-return series, a figure heavily influenced by a sharp 2022 decline.
Can the reported 27% September gain be verified?
Not from the available month-end prices. Yahoo Finance lists META at $725.18 on September 30, 2026, but the cited historical-data excerpt does not include the August 31 closing price needed to calculate a full-month return. The 27% figure therefore should not be treated as independently confirmed here.
Return conventions also matter. A change from the August 31 close to the September 30 close is not necessarily the same as a calculation from September’s first trading-day close to its last. Yahoo Finance’s displayed data also shows a $0.525 dividend ex-date on September 21. A price-return calculation and a dividend-adjusted total return can differ, so a claim should identify the price series and method used. Yahoo Finance’s historical data provides the cited September observations.
SeasonalityCharts reports a 34.62% September 2026 absolute price return through September 25, using its own first-session-close-to-final-session-close convention. Because that figure stops before month-end and uses a different calculation, it does not verify a month-end-to-month-end September gain. SeasonalityCharts’ META page defines its monthly return as the change from the first trading day’s close to the final trading day’s close.

What META did in October from 2012 through 2025
The table shows SeasonalityCharts’ monthly absolute returns for the 14 Octobers available from 2012 to 2025. These are first-trading-day-close-to-last-trading-day-close returns, not prior-month-end-to-month-end returns.

Five years were positive and nine were negative. The arithmetic mean is approximately -2.78%, calculated from the table’s displayed returns; it is not a figure published by Meta. The 2022 return of -32.07% pulls that average down substantially, so the mean does not describe a steady or dependable October pattern. The historical record includes outcomes from +13.24% to -32.07%.

Why October history cannot predict October 2026
A 14-year record is a description of past results, not a probability model that can tell investors what META will do next. The October observations are mixed, and a strong September does not establish that an October gain is more likely. The seasonality publisher itself warns that its averages are not forecasts.
Comparisons are useful only when the return definitions match. The October table measures from the first trading-day close to the last; a claim about September’s change from the prior month-end should use the previous month-end close as its starting point. Mixing those methods can make percentages appear comparable when they are not.

Business context behind the stock’s move
Meta’s July 29, 2026 second-quarter results offer business context, but they do not explain a particular September stock move or settle what October will bring. The company reported $60.801 billion in revenue, up 28% year over year, alongside costs and expenses that rose 55% and operating income that fell 8% year over year.
Investment spending and cash generation are also relevant to the picture. Meta reported $31.08 billion in capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases, and $784 million in free cash flow for the quarter. On the advertising side, Family of Apps ad impressions increased 14% year over year and the average price per ad rose 12%. Meta also reported 3.60 billion average daily active people across its Family of apps in June 2026, up 3% year over year.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the earnings release, “AI is accelerating our core business today, powering our next generation of products, and opening the door to entirely new enterprise opportunities.” That is management’s view of its strategy, not independent evidence of future returns. How to use the October numbers as an investor
- Treat the historical returns as a range of past outcomes, not an October target.
- Check whether any September percentage uses month-end closes or the first- and last-session convention before comparing it with the October table.
- Separate price return from total return if dividends are relevant to the calculation.
- Consider company results, spending and cash flow on their own merits rather than assuming calendar seasonality explains the stock’s next move.
