Iberia’s April 2025 changes added eligible-spend and partner-brand routes to status, but partner earnings can cover no more than 30% of a tier target. BA also lets members earn Tier Points through flights, holidays, eligible card spending, paid flight extras and Sustainable Aviation Fuels contributions. The better fit depends on which routes and spending channels you can actually use.
“Executive Club” is BA’s former program name; it is now called The British Airways Club. The comparison below uses the programs’ published rules, not a claim that their similarly numbered tiers deliver equivalent benefits.
How the status thresholds compare
Both programs publish the same point targets for their first three tiers, but the tier names differ. Iberia also has a fourth published level, Platino Prime. Points alone do not establish that tiers with matching thresholds offer equivalent benefits.

Iberia’s qualifying-flight alternatives apply to IB- or I2-coded flights operated by Iberia or an associated program airline; flights purchased entirely with Avios do not count toward that flight total. BA’s flight-count alternatives specifically require BA-coded flights. Both programs’ collection years run from 1 April to 31 March, according to their published rules. How Iberia Club status earning works
Eligible Iberia Group spend
Effective 1 April 2025, Iberia introduced 1 Elite Point per eligible euro of net spend on Iberia Group flights and eligible extras. Taxes and fees are excluded. Fare-family and cabin bonuses can add Elite Points, so two travelers spending the same amount may not necessarily earn the same total.
This can suit travelers who regularly buy eligible Iberia Group flights or extras, particularly when their fares or cabins qualify for bonuses. It is not simply a reward for any money spent with Iberia: the eligible activity and exclusions matter.

Partner-brand earnings are limited
Iberia awards 1 Elite Point per 10 Avios collected through partner brands. Those partner-brand Elite Points can account for at most 30% of the points required to reach or renew a tier. Iberia says the rest must come from flights with Iberia Group, oneworld airlines or program partner airlines. Partner earning therefore helps, but cannot replace the required flight activity.
Platino Prime and listed benefits
Iberia’s Platino Prime target is 30,000 Elite Points and has no published flight-count alternative. The tier is valid for two years. Iberia lists four free cabin upgrades annually, 9 Avios per euro on Iberia-code flights, free Avios transfers and free onboard Wi-Fi among its benefits. Iberia states that Platino and Platino Prime correspond to oneworld Emerald status. Benefit value depends on whether you can use these features on your own travel.

How The British Airways Club status earning works
More routes than flying alone
BA lists eligible flights, British Airways Holidays packages, eligible spending on a British Airways American Express Premium Plus card, paid bags or seats, and Sustainable Aviation Fuels contributions as Tier Point earning routes. Availability and eligibility depend on the specific product, transaction and member circumstances; access to a route should not be assumed for every traveler.
Flight earning depends on fare and cabin
BA says Tier Points on British Airways, American Airlines and Iberia flights depend on spend rather than distance, with the amount also affected by cabin and ticket type. Eligible oneworld partner flights can also earn Tier Points. A traveler should check the applicable earning rules for their ticket rather than infer qualification from mileage alone.

Which program may be friendlier for your travel pattern?
- Iberia may fit better if you regularly buy eligible Iberia Group travel and can combine that earning with partner-brand Avios activity. The 30% partner cap means flight earning remains necessary for the remainder of the target.
- BA may fit better if you can use its eligible holiday, card-spend, paid-extra or SAF routes, or your usual flights earn well under the fare and cabin rules.
- Flight-count qualification may matter if you take many qualifying short trips. Compare the specific codes and operating-carrier conditions: Iberia’s qualifying flight route and BA’s BA-coded flight route are not interchangeable.
- Benefits may outweigh the route if you value a particular tier’s lounge, priority, upgrade or other benefits. Compare the benefits you would actually use, not just the points target or tier name.
There is no independent comparative measure establishing which program is easier for a typical traveler. Their published rules support a conditional judgment: Iberia has added an eligible-spend and capped partner route, while BA already publishes several non-flight earning channels. Your country-specific access, itinerary, eligible spend and benefit priorities determine which is more achievable for you.

Iberia announced that Iberia Plus would become Club Iberia Plus from 1 April 2025, when the new Elite Point rules took effect. The press release described the program as having “more than 6.5 million members” at the time of the announcement; that is a dated historical figure, not a current membership count. Iberia’s loyalty director described its changes as “a fairer and more transparent way of rewarding our most loyal customers,” which is Iberia’s own characterization rather than independent evidence that it is fairer than BA. Iberia Group’s announcement sets out the redesign.
