A new lawsuit over Costco.com’s pricing argues that the distinction can mislead shoppers. A federal judge let the claims proceed past the initial stage, but did not decide that Costco broke the law.
What does “$0.00” shipping mean at Costco?
It indicates that checkout is not adding a separately itemized shipping charge. It does not, by itself, answer whether shipping or delivery costs are reflected in the listed online price.
In the court order, Costco pointed to a separate price-adjustment page that said: “Costco.com prices take into account shipping and handling fees not applicable to warehouse purchases.” The order also noted that the product listing described delivery, setup, and packing removal as included. Those disclosures distinguish a zero-dollar line item from a claim that delivery has no cost within the overall price.
That distinction is at the center of the dispute: the plaintiff argues that shoppers may read “$0.00” as meaning they pay nothing for shipping, while Costco’s disclosures say online prices account for shipping and handling.

What does the Costco lawsuit allege?
Christina Zaimi filed a proposed class action against Costco Wholesale Corporation in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, case No. 2:25-cv-01076. The lawsuit concerns an Aiden and Ivy Sereen six-piece sectional sofa.
According to the complaint as recounted in the court order, Zaimi bought the sofa online on December 30, 2024, for $2,349.99, with shipping listed as $0.00. The complaint compares that amount with an alleged warehouse price of $2,099.99 for the same sofa. These are allegations in the complaint, not independently verified prices or findings after a trial.

Zaimi’s theory is that Costco presented one online price while showing no additional shipping charge, even though shipping costs may be reflected in that price. She also contends that the checkout display could lead a reasonable shopper to believe shipping costs nothing. Costco pointed to disclosures about included delivery services, warehouse price variation, and online prices accounting for shipping and handling. The plaintiff argued those statements did not overcome the checkout impression.
What did the judge decide?
Judge John H. Chun denied Costco’s motion to dismiss. At this preliminary stage, the court found it plausible that a reasonable consumer could be misled by a $0.00 shipping display even if delivery costs were incorporated into the online price, and that general disclosures might not necessarily correct that impression.

A motion-to-dismiss ruling determines whether claims can proceed, not whether the allegations have been proven. The order did not find Costco liable, certify a class, or decide whether the company’s disclosures are ultimately lawful. The case’s status after that order is not established here; later developments such as settlement, class certification, trial, or final judgment should not be assumed.
How to compare Costco.com and warehouse prices
A lower warehouse price does not automatically show that an online price is deceptive or that every difference represents shipping. To compare offers, check that you are looking at the same item and configuration, then compare the complete cost and included services:

- Item match: Confirm the model, configuration, and included components are the same.
- Online total: Note the item price, any separately listed shipping or delivery fee, taxes, and services included with delivery.
- Warehouse total: Check the price for the matching item and account for any services that are included online but not part of the warehouse purchase.
- Price notices: Read any note about warehouse price variation or the treatment of shipping and handling in online prices.
This comparison helps reveal the actual difference you would pay for equivalent products and services. The lawsuit concerns how those components are presented; it does not establish that every Costco.com price is higher because of shipping.

A separate earlier case, Song v. Costco, also involved allegations about $0.00 shipping and delivery displays for online orders. GeekWire reported Costco’s position in that case: its support pages disclosed that online prices may include shipping and handling, and $0.00 meant no separate fee was added beyond the online price. Song and Zaimi’s lawsuit are distinct cases, and that reported argument should not be mistaken for a decision in Zaimi’s case.
