Its original shares trade in South Korea: ordinary shares under ticker 005930 and preferred shares under 005935. Samsung says US residents are prohibited from trading its London-listed GDRs, so the practical route to investigate is access to the Korean Exchange (KRX) through a provider that can serve you and route those trades.
Which Samsung shares can a US investor buy?
Samsung Electronics’ original shares are listed on the KRX. The ordinary shares trade as 005930 (ISIN KR7005930003); the preferred shares trade as 005935 (ISIN KR7005931001). These are distinct from the company’s London-listed global depositary receipts (GDRs), which trade as SMSN for common shares and SMSEL for preferred shares. Samsung’s listing and stock-purchase information describes these securities and their markets.
Samsung’s investor guidance states: “Individuals are prohibited from trading GDRs in accordance with Rule 144A of the US Securities Exchange Act.” That is the company’s stated guidance for US residents; verify current rules and your broker’s eligibility before acting. Do not assume a US brokerage account can access either the London GDRs or KRX shares.
Samsung reported 6,648,649,811 shares outstanding as of June 30, 2026: 5,846,278,608 ordinary shares (87.9%) and 802,371,203 preferred shares (12.1%). These figures describe shares outstanding, not treasury shares or a current market price. Samsung Electronics’ listing page provides the company’s share figures.

How to investigate buying Samsung shares through the KRX
Samsung describes two ways to access its Korean-listed shares: opening an account with a Korean securities firm after completing investor registration, or using a local securities firm or bank that is eligible to trade Korean stocks. Its guidance does not name a US broker or confirm any provider’s current eligibility, terms, or availability. Samsung’s “How to Buy Stock” guidance explains the routes at a company level.
- Ask your broker whether it serves US residents for KRX trading. Confirm that it can route orders to the Korean market and supports Samsung’s specific ticker and share class. Availability can differ by firm and account type.
- Confirm the account and registration requirements. If the provider requires a Korean-market investor registration or a Korean securities-firm account, ask who completes each step, which documents are needed, and how long approval takes.
- Check the funding and conversion process. Ask what currency the account must hold, how currency conversion works, and what conversion spread or transaction charge applies. Do not assume the displayed US-dollar value is the amount you will pay after conversion.
- Review order handling and settlement instructions. Confirm the available order types, market hours in your time zone, settlement timing, custody arrangements, and any handling or market-access charges before submitting an order.
- Save the provider’s tax and dividend information. Ask which tax documents it supplies and how it processes Korean dividends for your account. Tax outcomes depend on your circumstances and cannot be determined from Samsung’s company guidance alone.
Ordinary vs. preferred Samsung shares
The two KRX share classes differ in voting rights and a stated dividend feature. Samsung’s first-quarter 2026 interim report says preferred shares carry an additional cash dividend of 1% of par value per annum compared with ordinary shares, but have no voting rights. This is a class feature, not a 1% dividend yield and not a guarantee of a future dividend or payout amount. Samsung Electronics’ financial reports include the interim report.

Liquidity, transaction costs, and your broker’s access to each class are practical comparison points, but the company information cited here does not establish current figures for them. Compare the provider’s actual terms rather than assuming one class is preferable for every investor.
Dividends and currency: what to confirm
Samsung’s investor FAQ gives quarterly dividend record dates of March 31, June 30, and September 30. It says the year-end dividend and amount are determined by shareholder resolution at the annual general meeting; dates and amounts should not be treated as a promise of payment. For GDR distributions, Samsung says funds are paid in Korean currency through the Korean Securities Depository, then transferred in US dollars to Citigroup in New York for distribution. That GDR payment description does not determine how a broker handles dividends on KRX shares. Check your broker’s process, timing, currency conversion, and applicable tax treatment. Before placing an order
- Verify that the provider currently accepts your account and allows US residents to trade Samsung on the KRX.
- Confirm the ticker and share class, order-routing method, market hours, and any minimums or account requirements.
- Ask for a full fee breakdown, including commissions, exchange or access charges, custody or handling fees, and the foreign-exchange spread.
- Understand funding currency, settlement, dividend processing, and which tax documents the provider supplies.
- Check current regulatory restrictions and provider terms directly; they can change and are not established for any specific broker here.
Risks and limits to consider
Buying Korean-listed shares exposes a US investor to currency movements as well as Samsung Electronics’ business and share-price risks. Trading hours, execution, custody, and account administration may differ from those for US-listed securities.
