CDKeys presents itself as the retailer selling you a digital activation code, while G2A is a marketplace where you buy from an independent seller. That makes CDKeys the simpler counterparty for a beginner, but it does not prove that every CDKeys key is publisher-authorized or guaranteed to work. If the saving is small, buying directly from Steam or another authorized retailer gives you a clearer support and refund path.
CDKeys and G2A are not the same business model
The most important difference is who you are buying from.

G2A’s terms state that “EACH TRANSACTION CONCERNING THE SALE OF ITEMS VIA THE SELLER’S STORE IS EXECUTED BETWEEN THE BUYER AND THE SELLER.” They also say, unless applicable law requires otherwise, that G2A is not liable for the item’s quality, safety or legality, the seller’s solvency, or user conduct. That is a materially more complicated remedy structure than dealing with one retailer.
What is known about CDKeys’ reliability
Signals in CDKeys’ favor
CDKeys’ FAQ says it has sold keys for more than 10 years, serves millions of customers, supports Visa, Mastercard and PayPal, and currently shows a 4.7/5 Trustpilot rating. It also says customers save approximately £18, $21 or €20 per purchase on average. Those are CDKeys’ own statements, not independent audits.

The company describes its service this way:
“When you buy a game key from CDKeys.com, we send you a CD Key you can enter on your Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, or PC.”
That is consistent with a straightforward retailer experience: select a platform and region, pay CDKeys, then redeem the delivered code. A single retailer can be easier for a new buyer to understand than choosing among marketplace sellers.
Reasons not to treat those signals as a guarantee
CDKeys’ promotional claim that it is “the biggest and most reliable seller of CD Keys in the world” is self-description, not independent verification. No audited source establishes CDKeys’ invalid-key rate, authorization status for every publisher, or refund-success rate.
The Better Business Bureau profile for CDKeys.com is not BBB Accredited and displays a 1.4/5 customer-review rating from 10 reviews. The small sample cannot estimate the site’s true failure rate, but the listed complaints—including invalid or delayed codes, duplicate charges and difficulty obtaining support—are reasons to keep payment protections and avoid assuming every order will be trouble-free.

What buying from G2A changes
G2A describes itself as “a secure online marketplace where buyers and sellers trade digital items” and says it “doesn’t hold or sell any keys itself.” It also says its sellers are business-verified and that its systems check geographic restrictions. Those are representations by G2A, not an independent finding that every listing is safe or authorized.
On a marketplace, the seller’s listing matters as much as the platform. Two offers for the same game can differ in:
- Activation region and country restrictions
- Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, EA or another required platform
- Standard, deluxe, ultimate or bundle edition
- Key, account, subscription, gift or top-up format
- Seller refund rules and response quality
- Taxes, payment fees and optional buyer-protection charges
G2A’s model is not proof that keys are stolen, just as CDKeys’ retail model is not proof that every key is publisher-authorized. The evidence supports a difference in accountability, not a particular fraud percentage for either site.

A key can be revoked after activation
Steam Support says that when a third-party key is revoked, you should contact the seller to request a refund. If that does not resolve the problem, your alternatives are to buy the game from Steam, activate another key, or receive a gift copy so you can play again.

Steam’s normal store-refund process does not cover keys purchased outside Steam. In practical terms, using a cheaper third-party key means giving up Steam as the direct seller and making the third-party site your first refund channel.
Region and edition mistakes are common avoidable failures
A key can be valid yet unusable for your account if it is restricted to another country. An edition mismatch can also leave out downloadable content or fail to grant the product you expected. Before paying, confirm the exact platform, activation country or region, edition, language restrictions if listed, and whether the offer is a key rather than an account.
Refund and payment protection
The Federal Trade Commission advises marketplace shoppers to read refund policies before buying, not rely on star ratings alone because reviews can be fake or misleading, and avoid paying outside the marketplace because doing so can remove platform protection.
For either CDKeys or G2A:
- Pay through the site’s normal checkout, not a seller’s request for a separate transfer, cryptocurrency payment or direct message.
- Prefer a payment method that offers a documented dispute process.
- Save the order confirmation, listing page, seller name, region statement and screenshots before redeeming.
- Check the final total after taxes, currency conversion and payment fees.
- Read the site’s refund conditions before revealing or redeeming the key; redemption can affect eligibility.
Do not confuse a high star rating with a guarantee. Ratings can be incomplete or misleading, and a marketplace rating may describe the platform rather than the individual seller.

A safer buying process for a new PC gamer
- Compare the official price first. Check the game’s Steam price and any sale end date. A modest saving may not justify a weaker support path.
- Identify the product type. Reject listings described as accounts, shared accounts, subscriptions or top-ups when you want a normal game key. An account purchase can create ownership and recovery problems beyond a key dispute.
- Verify platform and region. Confirm that the code activates on your intended service and in your country. Do not rely on the game title alone.
- Verify the edition. Check whether it is the base game, deluxe version, a bundle or a package with separately listed downloadable content.
- Review the seller or retailer terms. On G2A, inspect the individual seller’s history and refund terms. On CDKeys, read the retailer’s stated refund process and delivery conditions.
- Use protected checkout. Keep the transaction on the platform and use a payment method with dispute rights.
- Document everything. Save the listing, price, region, order number and delivery email.
- Redeem promptly, then test the game. Early discovery gives you the best chance to use the applicable refund or dispute process.
What to do if the code fails
The code is not delivered
Check the order status, spam folder and account library, then use the retailer’s support channel. Keep the order number and delivery timestamps. If the seller does not resolve the issue, use the payment provider’s dispute procedure within its deadline.
The code is invalid or already used
Do not buy a replacement immediately. Capture the exact error, listing details and proof of purchase, and contact the retailer or G2A seller first. For a G2A purchase, remember that the seller—not G2A as the seller of the key—is the transaction counterparty under the platform’s terms.
The key is revoked later
Contact the third-party seller for a refund, as Steam instructs. Steam will not normally refund an externally purchased key. If the seller does not provide a remedy, escalate through the platform’s stated process and, where appropriate, your payment provider.
You were charged twice
Check whether one entry is a temporary authorization and whether both charges settled. If both are completed, send the order records to the retailer and preserve your payment statement for a possible dispute.

When buying directly from Steam is worth the extra cost
Steam is usually the better choice when the price gap is small, you want one clear support channel, or you are buying a major release you expect to keep for years. An official purchase avoids the third-party-key revocation pathway described by Steam Support and keeps the transaction inside Steam’s own store policies.
A third-party purchase can still be reasonable when the discount is substantial, the listing’s region and edition are unambiguous, and you understand that the retailer or marketplace seller—not Steam—must resolve a key problem. Treat the discount as compensation for that added risk and administrative work, not as free money.
Verdict
For a newcomer choosing only between these two sites, CDKeys is generally the less complicated option because it presents one retailer as your counterparty. That does not make it risk-free or establish that every key is authorized. G2A adds another layer: you must evaluate the individual seller, and G2A’s terms place the sale primarily between you and that seller.

If CDKeys is only slightly cheaper than Steam, the official purchase is the clearer value. If you use either third-party service, verify the product and region, avoid account listings, keep payment protection, save your records and redeem promptly.
