There is no verified evidence in the available reporting that Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy is raising another large fund. Recent reports instead concern Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, its project-finance program: Axios reported on February 12, 2026, that a second Catalyst fund was not planned, and Bloomberg reported on February 17 that Catalyst had paused new investments. Those reports do not establish whether the separate Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) is raising a fund.

What the latest reports say

The distinction is important: Breakthrough Energy operates several programs, and a report about one is not evidence of a fundraising decision by all the others.

  • Catalyst: Axios reported that Breakthrough Energy did not plan to raise a second project-finance fund. The report said Catalyst’s debut fund raised more than $1 billion in 2021. Axios, February 12, 2026.
  • New investments: Bloomberg reported that Catalyst had supported 10 startups and spent “high hundreds of millions of dollars” before suspending new investment. It said the organization’s focus shifted to companies already in its portfolio. The spending figure is approximate, not an audited total. Bloomberg, February 17, 2026.
  • BEV: Neither report answers whether Breakthrough Energy Ventures is currently raising or planning a separate venture fund.

Which Breakthrough Energy vehicle does a “new fund” refer to?

Breakthrough Energy’s programs serve different stages of climate technology, so their capital figures and fundraising status should not be combined.

Program Role What is established about a new raise
Breakthrough Energy Discovery Supports early innovation, entrepreneurs, and the climate-technology ecosystem through philanthropic and related programs. It is distinct from a venture fund or commercial project-finance fund. No new raise is established here. Breakthrough Energy Programs.
Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) Venture investment in science-driven companies across manufacturing, electricity, agriculture, transportation, and buildings. Whether BEV is raising another fund is not established by the cited reports or the program description. Breakthrough Energy Programs.
Breakthrough Energy Catalyst Financing for demonstrations and first-of-a-kind commercial-scale projects, including clean hydrogen, long-duration energy storage, sustainable aviation fuel, direct air capture, and manufacturing. Axios reported no second project-finance fund was planned; Bloomberg reported a pause in new investments in February 2026. Breakthrough Energy Programs.
Contrails and Grid Modeling Technology-development and modeling capabilities described by Breakthrough Energy. These programs are not evidence of a new investment fund. Breakthrough Energy Programs.

How to read the historical funding figures

Several figures associated with Breakthrough Energy describe different vehicles, dates, and types of capital. They do not confirm a current fundraise.

  • Catalyst’s debut fund: Axios reported in February 2026 that it raised more than $1 billion in 2021. This is a historical Catalyst figure, not a current target for another fund. Axios.
  • DOE-aligned demonstrations: In an August 12, 2021 announcement, Breakthrough Energy and the U.S. Department of Energy described the collaboration’s ability to mobilize $1.5 billion over three years for demonstrations. That was a planned mobilization through the collaboration, not a verified fundraise or an additional Catalyst fund. U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Venture funds: Breakthrough Energy’s September 2024 overview said its venture funds had more than $3.5 billion in committed capital and had invested in more than 110 companies. These are dated 2024 figures, not confirmed current totals or evidence of a new BEV fund. Breakthrough Energy, 2024 overview.
  • BlackRock Foundation: BlackRock describes a $100 million commitment to Catalyst as a grant commitment. The cited page does not provide an original publication date, so it should not be interpreted as a new commitment. BlackRock.

What would confirm a separate BEV fundraise?

A credible announcement should identify the vehicle as Breakthrough Energy Ventures rather than Catalyst, and specify what is known about the fund itself. Useful details to look for include:

  • The fund’s identity and whether it invests in companies or finances projects.
  • Its target investment stage and climate-technology areas.
  • A stated capital target, amount committed, or first close—clearly distinguished from one another.
  • Investor composition, geographic scope, and expected deployment timeline.

The current program description identifies BEV as the company-investing arm, but the available cited reporting does not provide a new fund’s target, commitments, investors, or fundraising timeline. Breakthrough Energy Programs.
