The headline traces to a Farm Policy News article published January 2, 2025, where “this month” meant January 2025, when concern was rising about a possible strike around a January 15, 2025 contract deadline. The master contract covering the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) now runs through September 30, 2030, according to the union.
Where the headline comes from
The phrase is a January 2025 news summary, not an October 2026 forecast. Farm Policy News summarized reporting from late December 2024 that strike risk was growing as the January 15 deadline approached, and it described how agricultural exporters were preparing. The article is still online at Farm Policy News, January 2, 2025.
Headlines like this often resurface in search results or social shares long after publication. A phrase such as “this month” is only accurate for the month in which it was written, so readers should check the publication date before treating it as a current warning.
What the current contract says
The ILA’s own statements describe a six-year master contract with a fixed end date. The table below lists the dates the union has published.

| Date | What happened or takes effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| October 1, 2024 | Start of the six-year master contract term | ILA, February 25, 2025 announcement |
| February 25, 2025 | Members at Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports ratify the new master contract | ILA ratification announcement |
| March 11, 2025 | ILA and USMX formally sign the agreement at ceremonies in New Jersey | ILA signing announcement |
| October 1, 2026 | Start of the contract’s third year, as described in the ILA’s September 2026 Labor Day message | ILA, September 2026 |
| September 30, 2030 | Contract expires | ILA, 2025 and September 2026 statements |
The February 2025 ratification announcement says the agreement “will be in effect until September 30, 2030.” The September 2026 Labor Day message describes the contract as “running through September 30, 2030.” The union also reported a 62% wage increase over the six-year term when it announced ratification in 2025.
These are the union’s own accounts. They establish the contract’s dates, but they are not an independent check on labor relations at every terminal.

Why a contract end date is not the whole picture
The January 2025 headline was tied to a contract deadline that has since passed. Because the current master contract runs to 2030, the expiration that drove that 2025 concern does not fall in October 2026.
That does not rule out every disruption. The sources reviewed did not include a current statement from USMX or from a port operator about October 2026 operations, and no current probability estimate for a strike was found. A missing forecast is a gap in the available reporting, not proof that operations are free of risk. Cargo can also be delayed by problems that are not strikes, so a single contract date should not be read as a guarantee of smooth operations.

What the 2025 reporting said about cargo and costs
The January 2025 article contains figures and scenarios that were accurate as reported at the time. They describe a past forecast, not present conditions, and the original data behind some of them were not independently verified.
| Claim as reported | Period or date | Attribution as relayed | Status today |
|---|---|---|---|
| A port shutdown could affect more than $100 million in weekly beef and pork export sales | Reported January 2025 | Joe Schuele, U.S. Meat Export Federation, via Brownfield Ag News | Historical estimate; the original Brownfield or USMEF publication was not located for this review |
| East and Gulf Coast ports handled 44% of U.S. waterborne pork exports | First half of 2024 | AgWeb reporting, as relayed by Farm Policy News | Historical share; not a current figure |
| East and Gulf Coast ports handled 29% of U.S. waterborne beef exports | First half of 2024 | AgWeb reporting, as relayed by Farm Policy News | Historical share; not a current figure |
The same article described shipper contingencies. Agricultural exporters could store goods or reroute them, but both options carry added cost and operational difficulty. Those contingencies were described as options during a 2025 threat, not as steps anyone is taking now.

How to check whether a real dispute is under way
- Check the publication date. If an article is from before October 2026 and uses “this month,” treat that phrase as historical.
- Compare the reported deadline with the contract dates. The ILA contract runs through September 30, 2030. A report that names a different expiration or a new bargaining deadline needs its own source.
- Look for a named source with a date. A current warning should cite an official notice from the union, USMX, or a port operator, not an unattributed forecast.
- Read the scope. Note which ports, terminals and worker groups are covered, and whether the concern involves containerized cargo or bulk goods.
- Look for official operational notices. Terminal or carrier advisories about service changes are more specific than general news coverage.
What the evidence does and does not establish
- Established: the January 2025 headline referred to January 2025 and a January 15, 2025 deadline.
- Established by the ILA: the master contract was ratified in February 2025, signed in March 2025, and runs through September 30, 2030.
- Not established: any current strike notice, any current disruption report, or any quantified probability of a strike in October 2026.
- Not established: that no labor or operational risk exists. The union’s statements describe the contract, not every day-to-day operating condition.
As of this writing, the most reliable reading is that the January 2025 warning is out of date and that the union’s contract dates do not point to a contract-expiration strike in October 2026.
