Amazon was reported to be planning to cut the number of packages it sends through the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) by at least two-thirds by fall 2026. That was a reported plan—not confirmation that the reduction happened. Amazon said it had submitted a bid and hoped to keep working with USPS at a reduced level, while blaming USPS for walking away from negotiations. The account does not establish that Amazon caused USPS’s broader financial problems or that the postal service is about to shut down.
What Amazon was reported to be planning
In a March 18, 2026 report, The Verge said Amazon planned to reduce the packages it sent through USPS by at least two-thirds by fall 2026, near the expiration of its contract. The report described a planned reduction, not a completed cut. It does not establish the final contract outcome or the volume of Amazon parcels USPS ultimately handled.
This is a dispute about the United States Postal Service, not the UK’s Post Office Limited. The UK organization’s Amazon parcel collection and returns services are separate from this U.S. contract story.
What Amazon and USPS said about the negotiations
Amazon said it had tried to continue negotiations and submitted a bid in February 2026. In the statement reported by The Verge, Amazon said: “We’ve submitted a bid as part of their new auction concept and hope to continue our partnership, even at a reduced level.”

Amazon also said USPS had walked away from negotiations. That is Amazon’s characterization; the reporting does not establish it as an independently verified account of why talks stalled. The reported aim was to retain a smaller relationship, rather than necessarily end it altogether.
Why the delivery relationship matters
Postmaster General David Steiner told Reuters that USPS delivered around 1.7 billion Amazon packages each year, a figure The Verge cited in its report. It is an attributed annual estimate, not a separately verified USPS shipment count in the reporting available here. Steiner also wanted to continue the relationship “at a fair price.”

That scale makes the contract commercially significant, but the figure alone does not show how much revenue USPS earns from Amazon, whether the work is profitable, or how a reduction would affect the service’s finances. Those answers depend on contract prices and costs, which the report does not quantify.
Does this mean USPS is going under?
No. The reported dispute does not establish that USPS is insolvent, stopping operations, or facing collapse because of Amazon. It concerns one major customer relationship and a planned reduction in package volume. USPS’s overall financial outlook is a broader issue, and the reporting does not calculate Amazon’s contribution to it.

Steiner’s concern about the postal service’s finances was reported in a separate context. Reuters quoted him the prior year saying: “There’s only one thing I am absolutely certain of — if we continue to do things the way we’re doing it today, we’re dead in about a year, and so I have got to go out and test the market on this price to find out if it’s a fair price.” The quote reflects Steiner’s warning and argument for testing prices; it is not evidence that USPS had ceased operating or that Amazon alone caused its financial difficulties.

The report does not establish a specific change to Amazon delivery times, fees, or customer service. A change in the carrier mix could affect which company delivers some packages, but the reporting does not say which shipments would move, to whom, or on what schedule. Customers should not treat the planned reduction as proof of a particular delivery change.

As of the October 7, 2026 information cutoff reflected in the reporting reviewed here, the later contract result and actual Amazon shipment volumes were not verified. The two-thirds figure should therefore remain framed as a plan Amazon was reported to have, not as a cut that definitely occurred.
