Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a June 2025 message to employees that he expects AI-driven efficiency gains to reduce the company’s total corporate workforce over the next few years. He did not give a number of jobs that AI would eliminate, and he said staffing would shift unevenly: some jobs would need fewer people, while other types of work would need more.
What Amazon’s CEO said about AI and jobs
In a message published by Amazon on June 17, 2025, CEO Andy Jassy said the company was building or developing more than 1,000 generative AI services and applications—a small fraction of what Amazon ultimately intended to build. He said the effect on staffing would vary by kind of work:
“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.”
Jassy’s forecast was that AI use would produce efficiency gains across the company and reduce its total corporate workforce “in the next few years.” That is a broad time horizon, not a dated layoff schedule. The message did not name specific corporate functions, promise that every efficiency gain would lead to a layoff, or quantify AI-related job losses. Amazon’s June 2025 message also encouraged employees to learn about and experiment with AI.

How to read the forecast alongside later job cuts
The June 2025 forecast and later reductions are related workforce developments, but they are not the same measurement. An announced reduction in corporate roles does not, by itself, establish that AI displaced those workers.

For scale, AP reported that Amazon had about 350,000 corporate employees and approximately 1.56 million employees overall in 2025. Those are contextual figures from that report, not current headcounts; corporate staff are only one part of Amazon’s total workforce.

How many Amazon jobs will AI eliminate?
The cited sources do not establish a published estimate of the number of Amazon jobs eliminated specifically because of AI. Jassy did not provide a figure in his June 2025 message. Later reports document corporate reductions, but those figures cover cuts with differing explanations and cannot be treated as a verified AI-replacement count.
Separating the claims matters: a company can reduce headcount while adopting AI without AI being the cause of every reduction—or even most of them. In February 2026, AP noted the difficulty of determining whether AI was the real cause of layoffs, while reporting Amazon’s statement about the January cuts.

What this may mean for Amazon employees
Jassy’s message points to a change in the mix of work as well as the possibility of fewer corporate roles overall. It does not identify which teams or individual positions will shrink, nor does it say how many new roles will be created. Employees should therefore treat it as a company-wide forecast rather than a personal notice of job loss.
For an employee assessing their own situation, the practical distinction is between a broad prediction and a specific employment decision. The message gives no role-by-role timetable; later reductions should be assessed by their own dates, scope, and stated rationale.
