A late Amazon delivery does not automatically qualify you for a refund of the item’s price. For Amazon.com orders, Amazon says a missed guaranteed delivery date may qualify for a refund of shipping fees. If a package is simply late, wait up to 48 hours beyond the estimated date, check tracking, then contact the right party based on who shipped the order.
What refund can you get for a late Amazon order?
Amazon’s US help page says that if an item had a guaranteed delivery date and Amazon missed it, the customer can receive a refund of the shipping fees. The policy does not promise a refund of the merchandise price just because the package arrived late. Amazon’s Late Deliveries policy applies to the shipping-fee remedy.
Pay attention to the date shown for your order: Amazon distinguishes an estimated delivery date from a guaranteed one. Its general instructions for unexpected delays are to wait and seek help if there is still no news; the shipping-fee refund language specifically concerns a missed guaranteed date.
What to do when an Amazon delivery is late
- Check the order and tracking. Open Your Orders, select the order, and review the latest tracking status and estimated delivery date. One order may arrive in separate packages with different dates and tracking information. Third-party tracking depends on the seller providing tracking details and the shipping option supporting tracking. Amazon’s tracking help explains these details.
- Allow 48 hours after the estimated date. Amazon advises allowing that time for unexpected delays and says most late deliveries arrive within it. Check carrier notifications and tracking updates while you wait. Amazon’s Late Deliveries page gives this guidance.
- Find out who sold and shipped the item. Check the order details. If Amazon shipped the order and there is still no news, contact Amazon Customer Service within 30 days of the estimated delivery date. If a third-party seller both sold and shipped it, contact the seller. Amazon’s instructions make this distinction.
- Request the shipping-fee remedy for a missed guaranteed date. In Your Orders, select the late order, then choose Problem with an order → Shipping or delivery issues → Shipment is late. Amazon says the applicable refund is for shipping fees. The available choices may depend on the order and its details.
When a third-party seller’s order never arrives
If a third-party seller sold and fulfilled the order, the A-to-z Guarantee is a separate route for qualifying claims, not an automatic late-delivery refund. Amazon describes it as protection for items “sold and fulfilled by a third-party seller who provides their own customer service directly to you.” Review Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee terms for the order-specific eligibility rules.

- For a nonreceipt claim, the last possible delivery date must be 90 days or less away.
- For nonreceipt, three days must have passed since the latest estimated delivery date, or tracking must show delivery confirmation, whichever happens sooner.
- You must have contacted the seller more than 48 hours earlier and not resolved the issue.
Amazon reviews whether a claim qualifies. Its terms also say a customer who requests a refund or chargeback from a payment provider is not eligible for a refund through A-to-z, so do not assume those routes can be pursued in parallel.
If the package is undeliverable—or merely delayed
An order marked undeliverable follows a different process: Amazon says it will be returned and automatically refunded when Amazon receives it. By contrast, if an order has already shipped and is only delayed, Amazon says it cannot be canceled through the order flow. Amazon’s tracking help covers these situations.
