iPhone 16e vs. iPhone 15 Pro: Which Is the Better Buy Around $599?

The iPhone 16e is the lower-risk pick for battery and newer hardware; the 15 Pro wins on display, cameras, and MagSafe. At $599, compare condition and the 2026 iPhone 17e before buying.

Short answer: Choose the iPhone 16e for a newer, lower-risk phone and stronger battery rating; choose the iPhone 15 Pro for its 120Hz display, MagSafe, and more versatile cameras—if you can verify the used phone’s condition. But $599 is no longer a simple head-to-head price: Apple’s refurbished 16e listings were far below that, while its refurbished 15 Pro listing was above it. If you’re spending the full $599 on a new phone, compare the current iPhone 17e too.

What does $599 buy now?

The iPhone 16e launched in the U.S. at $599 for 128GB, but that launch price is not a dependable guide to its current value. Apple’s Certified Refurbished listings showed the 128GB 16e at $419 and the 256GB model at $509. Apple’s refurbished listing showed a 128GB iPhone 15 Pro at $679 when available. These prices and stock can change; check the seller’s live listing before you buy. See Apple’s refurbished iPhone 16e listings and Apple’s refurbished iPhone listings.

That makes $599 best understood as a spending ceiling, not the current standard price of either phone. A refurbished 16e at a lower price is not equivalent to a used 15 Pro at the same sticker price: condition, storage, battery health, warranty, return rights, and carrier status all affect what you are actually getting. Carrier financing and trade-in offers can also make the upfront price look lower than the total cost.

A third option changes the decision: 2026 coverage reports that the iPhone 17e starts at $599 and includes 256GB base storage and MagSafe. Check current availability and terms before treating it as a direct alternative; the reported price is not a guarantee that every seller offers it for that amount. Tom’s Guide’s iPhone 17e vs. iPhone 16e comparison discusses the reported differences.

Which one feels better to use every day?

Choose the 15 Pro for its display

Both phones have a 6.1-inch OLED screen, but the 15 Pro’s ProMotion refresh rate can reach 120Hz. Scrolling, supported games, and animations can look smoother than on the 16e’s 60Hz screen. The 15 Pro also has an Always-On display and Dynamic Island; the 16e uses a notch and does not offer Always-On.

The 16e’s OLED is still a sharp, capable display. Its lower refresh rate and simpler front design are compromises, not evidence that the screen is unusable. If you have not cared about high-refresh displays before, the difference may matter less than battery condition or price. If smooth motion is a daily priority, the 15 Pro is the clear choice. A used 15 Pro also brings display-wear risk: inspect for burn-in, scratches, dead pixels, and touch problems before paying.

Both are fast; the newer chip is not the whole story

The 16e uses the newer A18, while the 15 Pro’s A17 Pro is an older Pro-class chip with more capable graphics hardware. Both are quick for ordinary apps, photography, video, and multitasking, and both support Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence features depend on compatible software, language, region, and the particular feature; support does not mean every feature is available to every user.

Apple iPhone 16e, 128GB, White - Unlocked (Renewed)

The 16e’s newer generation makes it reasonable to expect a longer runway than the 15 Pro, but Apple has not promised an exact number of years of software updates for either model. Choose based on the features and condition you can verify rather than treating a specific future support period as guaranteed.

Which phone takes the photos you want?

The 15 Pro is more versatile

Its three rear cameras provide wider framing, a dedicated 3x telephoto view, and more options for close-up and creative work. That gives it a real advantage for landscapes, interiors, groups in tight spaces, portraits from farther away, macro photography, and travel when changing lenses is not practical. It also supports ProRAW and advanced video options such as ProRes and Log, which matter to people who edit footage or want more control over capture.

The 16e is capable for everyday snapshots

The 16e’s single 48MP rear camera suits everyday people and pet photos, daylight scenes, social posts, and standard 1x pictures. Its 2x mode uses a crop from the main sensor; it is not a separate telephoto camera and is not equivalent to the 15 Pro’s dedicated 3x lens. The 16e has no ultrawide camera. For a single-camera design’s practical limits and the 2x distinction, see MacRumors’ iPhone 16e review.

More camera hardware means more framing choices, not a guarantee that every automatic photo from the 15 Pro will look better. Light, subject, processing, and technique still affect the result. For a quick decision: if you regularly use 0.5x, 3x, macro, or Pro video, favor the 15 Pro; if most of your photos are straightforward 1x snapshots, the 16e may be enough.

Battery, MagSafe, and USB-C: daily trade-offs

Apple rates the 16e for up to 26 hours of video playback and the 15 Pro for up to 23 hours. Those are Apple’s manufacturer ratings, not a promise of a particular screen-on time for your apps, settings, network, or battery condition. A new or Apple-refurbished 16e offers a more predictable starting point; a used 15 Pro’s remaining capacity depends on its history and wear.

MagSafe is a significant everyday difference. The 15 Pro has built-in magnets for compatible chargers, wallets, mounts, and battery packs. The 16e supports wireless charging but lacks native MagSafe magnets. A compatible magnetic case can help it attach to some accessories, but a case does not necessarily reproduce native MagSafe charging performance or alignment.

Both phones use USB-C, but that does not make their data-transfer capabilities identical. The 15 Pro is better suited to moving large video files, external-storage workflows, and production work; the 16e is generally a fit for charging, ordinary file transfers, CarPlay, and everyday accessories. This is a data-transfer distinction, not a claim that the 15 Pro necessarily charges faster.

When does each phone make financial sense?

  • Refurbished 16e at the listed $419 for 128GB: A strong value if you want a newer, simpler phone and do not need Pro cameras, ProMotion, or native MagSafe. The price is a time-sensitive Apple listing, not a permanent offer.
  • Refurbished 16e at the listed $509 for 256GB: A useful option if storage is more important than the 15 Pro’s camera system. It may suit a buyer who takes many photos, saves offline media, or installs larger games but does not use Pro video features.
  • New 16e at its original $599 U.S. launch price: Consider it if new condition, warranty, and the A18 platform matter more than the 15 Pro’s display and cameras. Compare the current 17e before committing at this price.
  • 15 Pro around $599 from a third party: It can be compelling only if the phone is unlocked, has healthy battery capacity, passes functional checks, and comes with trustworthy returns. Apple’s listed refurbished 128GB unit was $679 when available, so do not assume a $599 listing has equivalent condition or protections.

Storage is part of the value calculation. A 128GB model can feel tight with a large photo library, 4K video, offline media, or games; it is especially limiting if you plan to record ProRes on the 15 Pro. Check the exact capacity in the listing and on the device before buying.

How to inspect a used iPhone 15 Pro before paying

Use this checklist in person or ask the seller to demonstrate and document each item before the return window closes:

  • Identity and eligibility: Confirm the storage capacity, serial number or IMEI, unlocked status, and that the phone is not activation-locked. Ask about carrier financing or blacklist status; do not rely on a seller’s verbal assurance alone.
  • Battery and repair history: Check battery health and any service or parts warnings. Look for an “Unknown Part” notice or undisclosed repairs, and ask whether the parts are genuine and the repair history is known. Factor likely battery service into the total price.
  • Display and controls: Test touch across the whole screen, brightness, True Tone, Face ID, the Action button, and the display for scratches, burn-in, dead pixels, or discoloration.
  • Cameras and sound: Test each rear camera, including ultrawide and 3x, plus the front camera, flash, microphones, and speakers. A quick 1x photo alone does not verify the camera system.
  • Ports and connectivity: Inspect the USB-C port and test charging and data connection if possible. Confirm cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the carrier you intend to use.
  • Physical condition and protections: Check for liquid-damage evidence, frame damage, and signs of a hard drop. Get the return period, warranty, and seller’s condition grade in writing before completing payment.

A used phone’s IP68 rating is not a reason to assume it remains waterproof, particularly after age, impact, or repair. If the seller will not allow basic checks or provide a return route, treat the low price as added risk rather than a bargain.

Which should you buy?

Buy the iPhone 16e if

  • You want a new or lower-risk device and predictable battery condition.
  • Battery life, the newer A18 platform, and a simpler ownership experience matter more than camera flexibility.
  • You mostly take standard snapshots and do not rely on ultrawide, telephoto, macro, or Pro video.
  • You can get it meaningfully below $599, especially in a reputable refurbished listing with clear terms.

Buy the iPhone 15 Pro if

  • ProMotion, Always-On, and Dynamic Island would improve your daily use.
  • You want ultrawide and 3x cameras, macro, or advanced video options.
  • You already use MagSafe accessories or need faster USB-C data workflows.
  • You find a clean, unlocked example with strong battery health, disclosed repair history, and a dependable return policy near your budget.

Compare another model if

  • You are spending the full $599 on a new phone: the reported $599 iPhone 17e with 256GB base storage and MagSafe may offer a more current entry-level package.
  • You want more storage but not Pro cameras: Apple’s listed refurbished 256GB 16e at $509 may fit better than a 128GB 15 Pro.
  • You need a larger screen, or both candidates are only available in worn or poorly documented condition: neither is automatically the right purchase.

For the broader feature differences, MacRumors’ iPhone 16e vs. iPhone 15 Pro buyer’s guide also compares the two models.
