Indigo Ag Registered a Novel Biofungicide in 2022: What It Does and What’s Known Now

Indigo Ag announced on April 19, 2022, that it had registered a seed-treatment biofungicide based on the bacterium Kosakonia cowanii strain SYM00028. Indigo said it was intended to suppress several soilborne plant diseases across six crop groups. The announcement forecast commercial availability in 2023, but that forecast—and the Environmental Protection Agency’s record of a 2022 first-registration year—does not establish that the product is currently registered or for sale.

What Indigo announced

Indigo described the product as a microbial biofungicide in its biotrinsic line and said it was the first biofungicide based on Kosakonia cowanii. The company said the strain had been isolated from a seed of a historic corn landrace. Its April 19, 2022 announcement said the product would enter demonstration trials that crop season, with commercial availability through select agricultural retailers anticipated in 2023. That was a forecast at the time, not confirmation of a later launch.

Indigo Ag’s April 19, 2022 announcement is the primary source for the product description and company claims.

What the treatment was intended to target

Indigo said the bacterium colonizes root surfaces and suppresses Fusarium, Pythium, and Rhizoctonia through multiple mechanisms, including stimulation of the plant’s natural defenses. These are the company’s descriptions of the organism and its intended activity, not independent findings presented in the announcement.

Crop groups named by Indigo

Indigo said the product was registered for use on the following crop groups:

  • Cereal grains
  • Corn
  • Soybean
  • Cotton
  • Legume vegetables
  • Oil seeds

This is the crop list in the 2022 announcement; it should not be treated as a substitute for a current product label or state-specific registration.

What Indigo reported about performance

Indigo said its trials consistently showed direct, significant improvements in root weight and full-emergence. The announcement did not provide numerical results, trial locations, sample sizes, study design, or independent comparisons. It therefore does not establish the size or repeatability of those effects, a yield benefit, or superiority to another fungicide.

What the EPA record does—and does not—confirm

The EPA’s Biopesticide Active Ingredients list, last updated July 9, 2026, records Kosakonia cowanii strain SYM00028 with a first-registration year of 2022. EPA expressly cautions that the list does not account for regulatory status and does not confirm that an ingredient remains currently registered.

EPA explains that pesticide registration under FIFRA involves evaluating whether a proposed use poses unreasonable risks to human health or the environment, alongside responsibilities involving food residues and endangered species. That general framework does not establish the current status of this particular product. The EPA’s biopesticide overview describes the broader regulatory context.

A separate EPA label record accepted February 12, 2026, is for Indigo 398 WD, which lists Bacillus aryabhattai strain SYM36613 and in-furrow and seed-treatment uses. It concerns a different active ingredient and product, not the Kosakonia-based biofungicide. The Indigo 398 WD label record should not be used as evidence of the Kosakonia product’s current label or availability.

Is the product currently available?

The available records cited here do not establish whether Indigo’s Kosakonia product is currently marketed, registered for use in a particular state, or available through retailers. The 2023 sales expectation was announced in 2022 and is not proof that the launch occurred. Current legal-use and availability questions require confirmation against current EPA product records, relevant state registrations, and information from Indigo or an authorized seller.

Other figures in the 2022 announcement

Indigo said its collection contained more than 36,000 microbial strains and described the discovery and registration process for this product as three years. It also characterized the emerging market for stress-mitigation solutions as worth $7.3 billion. These are company-reported figures from 2022, not independently verified current market or industry statistics.

Organic Plant Fungicide & Root Stimulant Concentrate - Makes 16 Gallons
  • IT MAKES THE PLANT DEFEND ITSELF - Rather than coating leaves in something that kills spores, this triggers the plant to raise its own phytoalexins and cell-wall strengtheners. The defense is the plant's, and it travels where the sap goes.
  • WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO USE IT - A 16 oz liquid concentrate making up to 16 gallons of finished spray. Mix at the rate the label gives for your crop, and use it on the regular schedule rather than saving it for trouble.
  • WHAT IT HOLDS OFF - Powdery mildew, botrytis, white mold, leaf spot, rust and black spot on rose, across vegetables, fruit, berries, flowers, ornamental trees and shrubs.
  • START BEFORE YOU SEE IT - Protectants work far better ahead of an outbreak than after one. Begin as new growth comes out and repeat on the interval the label gives for your crop.
  • ONE BOTTLE GOES A LONG WAY - At the label rate a single 16 oz bottle makes up to 16 gallons of finished spray, which is a season for most home gardens. Read and follow the label before use.

Eric Bartels, then Indigo Ag Chief Science Officer and Head of Biological Products, said: “The accelerated three-year, discovery and registration process for this new biofungicide – which we believe to be the most rapid in the industry – places Indigo on the leading edge of an emerging $7.3B market for stress mitigation solutions.” The timeline, industry comparison, and market estimate in that quotation are Indigo’s claims.
