Indian shares moved higher in Wednesday early trading, led by information-technology stocks after HCLTech forecast fiscal 2026 revenue growth of 2% to 5%—above analysts’ expectations, according to Reuters. The report described a positive outlook reaction, not an across-the-board earnings beat: HCLTech’s quarterly revenue was slightly below estimates.
What happened in Wednesday’s early trading
Indian equity benchmarks were higher in the early session covered by Reuters, with technology shares outpacing the broader market. HCLTech was reported up 7%, the Nifty IT index up 3%, and the Nifty 50 up 0.4%. Those are intraday observations from that report, not closing prices, live quotes or measures of what the shares are worth now.

The figures show the rally was concentrated in IT stocks rather than evenly spread across the market: the sector index’s reported gain was larger than the Nifty 50’s. HCLTech’s move was larger still, making it a notable contributor to the sector’s strength in that account. The numbers describe price moves, however; they do not by themselves establish how much of the broader index’s rise came from HCLTech.
Why HCLTech shares were a catalyst
The forward-looking part of HCLTech’s results was the key positive signal. The company forecast revenue growth of 2% to 5% for fiscal 2026, and Reuters reported that the range was ahead of analysts’ expectations. Investors may respond to guidance because it offers an indication of what management expects in the period ahead, not just a record of the quarter that has ended.

That positive outlook came alongside a less favorable comparison: quarterly revenue was slightly below estimates. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the report as saying HCLTech beat all earnings expectations. The distinction is between a past-period result that missed estimates modestly and a forward growth forecast that exceeded expectations.
| Measure | Reported figure or result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| HCLTech fiscal 2026 revenue-growth outlook | 2% to 5% | Reuters reported that this forecast exceeded analysts’ expectations. |
| HCLTech quarterly revenue | Slightly below estimates | The report does not characterize quarterly revenue as a beat. |
| HCLTech shares | Up 7% in Wednesday early trading | An intraday move reported by Reuters, not a closing return or current quote. |
| Nifty IT index | Up 3% in the same early-session report | A sector-index move, not a gain for every IT stock. |
| Nifty 50 | Up 0.4% in the same early-session report | The broader benchmark’s reported intraday move. |
What analysts said—and what that does not prove
Reuters quoted JP Morgan analysts describing HCLTech’s in-line results and forecast as “a rare feat and best among peers” amid what they characterized as a run of misses and underwhelming expectations. That is the analysts’ assessment of the results relative to peers, not an independently established ranking of every Indian IT company. It helps explain why the forecast could stand out to investors, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of future performance.

The market reaction is also not proof that the outlook will be achieved. The reported move captures investors’ response at one point in a trading session. It does not establish subsequent share performance, the eventual closing level, or whether the forecast will translate into realized growth.

A different Reuters report syndicated by MarketScreener describes an October 2025 session in which Indian shares opened higher after HCLTech beat second-quarter revenue estimates and maintained its annual growth forecast; that account reported a 0.6% gain for the Nifty IT index. It is a separate episode, with a different revenue result and market move. It should not be used to reinterpret the Wednesday early-trading figures above or to suggest the two reports describe one continuous rally.

What the report means for readers
For a reader asking why Indian shares rose after HCLTech earnings, the clearest answer is that investors reacted to a stronger-than-expected fiscal 2026 growth outlook, while IT stocks led the broader market’s early gains. The important qualification is that HCLTech’s quarterly revenue was slightly below estimates. A forecast beating expectations and a quarterly revenue miss can coexist; they measure different periods and should not be collapsed into a single claim that the company beat earnings.
