Chargeflow, a merchant-facing chargeback dispute company, announced an $11 million seed round led by OpenView Venture Partners, according to TechCrunch’s August 8, 2023 report. The report put the company’s total funding at $14 million because it also counted an earlier, previously undisclosed $3 million seed round. Chargeflow is a business software service—not a consumer credit card or a card issuer.

Why the headline says $11 million and $14 million

The two figures describe different things. The $11 million was the newly announced seed financing. Chargeflow had also closed a $3 million seed round several months earlier, which TechCrunch said had not previously been disclosed. Adding that earlier round to the new one brought the reported cumulative total to $14 million.

OpenView Venture Partners led the $11 million round, the report said. It did not describe the $14 million as a single financing or say that the earlier $3 million was part of the newly announced round.

What Chargeflow does

Chargeflow’s software is intended to help merchants respond when a customer disputes a card transaction and a chargeback process follows. The company’s described service automates the preparation and submission of dispute responses. Its customers are merchants, rather than consumers looking for a credit card.

How the reported workflow works

  1. Connect transaction information. The service integrates with e-commerce platforms, payment service providers, and related tools, and matches a dispute to the merchant’s order data.
  2. Build a response for the dispute. Machine learning helps check the requirements associated with the chargeback code and prepare evidence and a response tailored to that code, using templates.
  3. Review before submission. TechCrunch reported that human experts review the generated responses before the service submits them to the relevant bank or credit-card company.

This description combines automation with human review; it does not mean every dispute is automatically won or that a merchant’s evidence guarantees a particular outcome. The report did not provide a success rate or a comprehensive account of which dispute types the service supported.

Why the founders said they built it

Chargeflow was launched in 2021 by brothers Ariel Chen and Avia Chen, who had previously co-founded Babe Cosmetics. In an email to TechCrunch, the founders said their former business had encountered chargebacks: “Although Babe Cosmetics was thriving, it encountered a significant problem with chargebacks.” They said the problem, together with their ecommerce, technology, and fintech experience, led them to look for a solution.

  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.

The company’s origin story illustrates the business problem it was aiming to address: merchants must assemble information relevant to a disputed transaction and respond according to the requirements attached to the dispute. Chargeflow’s reported approach was to use merchant data and software-generated responses to handle much of that preparation, while retaining expert review before submission.

Planned use of the funding—and what is historical

The founders told TechCrunch that the proceeds would go toward technology development, U.S. growth, and hiring. At the time of the August 2023 report, the company had roughly 40 employees and said it aimed to double headcount to 80 by the end of that year. That was a stated target, not confirmation that the hiring goal was achieved.

The same date matters for the other business details here. The reported funding, product workflow, pricing description, and staffing figures are from 2023; they do not establish Chargeflow’s present-day funding, size, product availability, or terms. The founders described the company’s pricing at the time as based on successful recovery of disputes in the merchant’s favor. TechCrunch’s account does not verify current pricing or contract terms.

What the announcement means for merchants

The financing announcement is evidence that Chargeflow raised capital to develop its merchant dispute service and pursue growth, not evidence that a merchant will recover a particular amount or that chargebacks will disappear. A merchant considering any dispute service would need current information about integrations with its own sales and payment systems, the disputes covered, how evidence is handled, the role of human reviewers, and the fees and conditions that apply. The 2023 report does not provide enough comparative detail to rank providers on those points.

For personal-finance readers, the central distinction is simple: this was a funding story about software used by businesses that handle payment disputes. It was not a new consumer card, a change to cardholder protections, or a report of a new card benefit.
