Re:

Indian Crypto Exchanges vs. International Platforms: Fees, INR Access and Risks

Choosing a crypto platform in India takes more than comparing advertised trading fees. Check live quotes, INR routes, current FIU-IND status, withdrawal terms and tax records for the specific provider and account.

There is no reliable “Indian versus international” winner on fees or safety alone. The better choice depends on the exact provider and the transaction: compare the live price quote and all charges, confirm the INR and withdrawal routes available to Indian accounts, check the provider’s current compliance status, and make sure you can retrieve usable tax records. FIU-IND registration is an anti-money-laundering reporting requirement for covered activity—not a safety rating or guarantee against loss. Using an overseas platform does not, by itself, remove Indian tax obligations.

What “Indian” and “international” tell you—and what they do not

These labels describe a platform’s origin or branding, not a complete picture of the service an Indian user will receive. An international brand may have an India-facing entity or features, while a provider’s actual INR routes, available products and withdrawal terms can differ by account, product and date. Do not assume that every international platform is non-compliant, or that every platform described as Indian offers the same access or protections.

For a useful comparison, assess the specific provider and entity that will serve your account, then compare the features available to Indian users. The decision usually turns on these practical questions:

  • Can you deposit and withdraw INR using a route you are willing and eligible to use?
  • What is the total cost of the order and of later withdrawing funds or crypto?
  • Can you access the assets, INR pairs, order types and liquidity you actually need?
  • Can you withdraw crypto to a wallet, and on which networks and terms?
  • Can you download records that make deposits, trades, transfers and TDS understandable?
  • What does the provider disclose about custody, complaints and operational risks?

Compare the full transaction cost, not the advertised trading fee

A maker/taker fee is only one component of what a trade costs. A platform advertising a low trading fee may still produce a more expensive execution if its displayed quote is less favourable, or if payment, conversion or withdrawal charges apply. Compare the same asset, direction, approximate order size and timing on each platform’s live order preview.

Build a like-for-like cost check

Cost item What to check Why it matters
Displayed buy or sell quote Compare the actual price offered for the same order, not just the last traded price. The difference between the quote and a reference market price can affect execution cost.
Trading fee Check the current fee schedule and the fee shown for your order type and account tier. Maker and taker rates may differ; do not assume an advertised rate applies to every order.
INR funding and conversion Check any payment-provider charge, conversion step or P2P step, and the amount credited after fees. A route with no obvious exchange fee may still have an associated payment or conversion cost.
Other service charges Review charges shown at checkout or in the provider’s terms, including any applicable GST or service charge. These can change the amount paid or received; distinguish them from the trading fee and from tax withheld on a transfer.
Crypto withdrawal Check the withdrawal fee, supported network, minimum and any limit before sending. Network choice and withdrawal terms affect the cost and whether the destination wallet can receive the asset.
Exit to INR Check the sell quote, withdrawal route, charges and settlement conditions for the intended exit. Funding an account is only part of the cash-out path; verify both directions.

Platform-specific fee schedules and provider-by-provider figures are not established here, so a numerical “lowest-fee exchange” ranking would be misleading. Use each provider’s current official fee schedule and an actual order preview; prices, spreads and payment routes can change.

Check INR access and the features available to your account

Before funding an account, confirm the current India-specific deposit and withdrawal options in the platform’s own app or terms. Availability can change, and an advertised global feature does not prove that it is available to an Indian account. Check both the way money enters and the way it can leave, including settlement expectations, limits and any conversion or P2P step.

Verify the exact route and product

  • INR rails: Confirm which bank, UPI or other routes are currently enabled for your account, any limits, and whether deposits and withdrawals are both supported.
  • Assets and pairs: Check that the asset and INR pair you want are listed for Indian users, rather than relying on a global asset catalogue.
  • Orders and liquidity: Confirm the available order types and inspect the live order book or quote for the size you intend to trade.
  • Crypto withdrawals: Check whether withdrawals are enabled, which networks are supported, and the fees, limits and minimums. An exchange balance is not the same as control of crypto in a wallet you manage.
  • Account-specific terms: Read the legal terms and product disclosures for the entity that will hold or process your account.

FIU-IND registration is a compliance check, not a safety guarantee

The Government of India says that VDA service providers carrying out specified activities in India—including exchange between virtual digital assets and fiat, VDA transfers, or safekeeping or administration—must register with FIU-IND as reporting entities and comply with applicable Prevention of Money Laundering Act obligations. The stated requirement applies to covered activity whether a provider is onshore or offshore; it does not depend on physical presence in India. This is an activity-based compliance requirement, not an endorsement of a provider’s business, a deposit guarantee or protection from market, custody or operational loss.

Registration status should be checked for the particular provider or entity at the time you are deciding. A past announcement or historical provider count cannot establish current status or the availability of a specific service. The Ministry of Finance said on September 9, 2026, that 15 providers had received FIU-IND non-compliance notices and that the notices sought takedown of their apps or URLs for operating without compliance with relevant PMLA provisions. That announcement is a reason to check the named provider, not a basis for treating every international platform as non-compliant.

In 2024, Binance announced that it had registered as an Accountable Entity with FIU-IND and that its website and app were accessible to users in India. That is the company’s statement at that time; it is not a current independent verification of registration, every product feature, or government endorsement.

The Government of India’s September 9, 2026, public warning states: “Crypto products and NFTs are unregulated and can be highly risky. There may be no regulatory recourse for any loss from such transactions.” Read that warning alongside a provider’s terms and custody disclosures; registration alone does not establish what recourse will be available to you in a particular dispute.

Section 194S TDS can apply regardless of platform location

The Income Tax Department’s guidance, updated to reflect the Finance Act, 2026, describes deduction under section 194S at 1% of consideration for covered transfers of virtual digital assets (VDAs) to a resident, subject to the provision’s thresholds and transaction rules. Platform location alone should not be treated as an exemption. Whether and how deduction is handled depends on the transaction structure, so an offshore account does not establish that no TDS obligation applies.

The guidance says no deduction is required under this provision where aggregate consideration in the financial year does not exceed ₹10,000, or ₹50,000 for a specified person. It also says the TDS base excludes GST or charges levied by the deductor for rendering a service. These are statutory TDS details, not exchange pricing.

Who handles deduction depends on how the transfer is made

For an exchange trade in which the exchange pays the seller, the exchange may be responsible for deduction. The Income Tax Department’s guidance also addresses trades involving a broker, VDA-for-VDA swaps and intraday transactions, for which deduction is addressed at each square-off. Do not infer the responsible party from the platform’s country or brand: check the applicable rules for the specific transaction and the records the parties provide.

TDS is a withholding obligation, not the exchange’s trading fee and not, by itself, the user’s final income-tax bill. Keep the relevant transaction and deduction records, reconcile them with your own activity, and consult current Income Tax Department material or a qualified tax professional for your circumstances. The guidance cited here concerns TDS; it does not establish a complete tax calculation or answer every question about gains, losses or reporting.

Use this checklist before choosing or funding a platform

  1. Identify the contracting provider. Find the legal entity named in the account terms, not just the consumer-facing brand.
  2. Check current compliance information. Verify the provider’s current FIU-IND status using current official information; do not rely solely on an old announcement or registration count.
  3. Test the complete INR path. Confirm the current deposit and withdrawal methods, limits, timing and any extra conversion or P2P step before sending money.
  4. Price the same transaction. Compare the live order quote, applicable trading fee, payment and service charges, and the intended exit or crypto-withdrawal cost.
  5. Check the features you need. Confirm asset availability, INR pairs, order types, liquidity and crypto withdrawal networks for your Indian account.
  6. Review custody and recourse. Read custody, security, complaint and legal disclosures. Decide whether you intend to keep assets on-platform or withdraw them to a wallet you control.
  7. Confirm the records. Check that you can export trades, transfers, deposits, withdrawals and TDS information in a form you can reconcile.

What the available figures do—and do not—show

The Ministry of Finance reported that 50 VDA service providers had registered as of its October 1, 2025, release. That is a historical count, not a current total and not evidence that any particular provider remains registered or offers a specific service. Likewise, the September 2026 notice figure of 15 providers concerns those named in that release, not all international platforms. Neither figure can substitute for a current provider-level check.
