FTMO says successful participants may qualify for monetary rewards based on simulated results and compliance with the applicable terms. The research reviewed does not substantiate calling FTMO a scam, but it also did not establish independent data on payout reliability, pass rates, or typical trader earnings.
The evaluation fee is real money and can be lost. The advertised account balance is fictitious capital, not cash deposited in your name or available to withdraw. FTMO says it may use client trading data in separate trading on its own accounts; that does not give each participant control of a live account.
What FTMO actually sells
FTMO describes its Challenge as an evaluation conducted in simulated market conditions. Participants trade with fictitious funds and, if they meet the objectives and terms, may become eligible for rewards linked to simulated profits. FTMO’s Terms and Conditions say it provides simulated-trading services and educational tools, does not act as a broker, and does not accept deposits.
The usual process is:
- You select a 1-Step or 2-Step product, choose an available account size, and pay its fee.
- You trade under that product’s objectives and rules.
- For 2-Step, you must pass both the Challenge and Verification stages; 1-Step has one evaluation stage.
- If you satisfy the applicable conditions and FTMO approves you, you may qualify for an FTMO Account and performance rewards.
The account size is a reference for simulated trading objectives and limits, not a cash allocation. A “$100,000 account,” for example, does not mean $100,000 is deposited in your name or available for withdrawal.

Is FTMO regulated?
FTMO’s Terms and Conditions describe a simulated-trading service, not a brokerage account holding client deposits. The research reviewed does not establish a comprehensive regulatory status for every country, so avoid treating a general claim about regulation as a country-specific legal conclusion.
This distinction does not by itself establish that FTMO is fraudulent. It does mean you should not assume an FTMO evaluation provides the same protections as a regulated brokerage account, such as protections that may apply to client deposits. Check the terms and relevant rules in your country before paying.
How FTMO’s evaluation model works
FTMO currently describes 1-Step and 2-Step products with different stages, targets, fees, and rules. The following figures are the objectives published on FTMO’s Trading Objectives page, retrieved in 2026; verify the current rules for the exact product before purchasing.
| Feature | 1-Step | 2-Step |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluation stages | One Challenge stage | Challenge followed by Verification |
| Published profit targets | 10% Challenge target | 10% Challenge target and 5% Verification target |
| Published loss and day rules | Best Day Rule: best day must not exceed 50% of positive days’ profit, as specified by FTMO | 10% maximum loss and at least four trading days in each evaluation stage |
| Fee treatment after passing | One-time fee is not refunded after passing | One-time fee covers both stages and is refunded with the first reward withdrawal after success, according to FTMO |
These are product rules, not statistics about typical trader performance. FTMO’s current Trading Objectives page also sets product-specific daily loss requirements; check how it calculates losses, including equity, open positions, commissions, and swaps, before trading. Do not assume the table covers every account-type restriction.

What happens to the Challenge fee?
FTMO says the fee covers the Challenge and related services. Its current FAQ says the 2-Step fee is a one-time payment covering both stages and is refunded with the first reward withdrawal after successful completion. The 1-Step fee is not refunded after passing. The fee is not a deposit or trading capital, and the 2-Step refund is conditional—not an unconditional refund for buying or passing.
Do not assume a specific price: it can depend on account size, region, and promotion. Check the live checkout and current fee terms for your selection before paying.
Can FTMO traders withdraw real money?
FTMO says participants who meet the applicable conditions may receive monetary rewards based on simulated trading results. The trading account itself uses fictitious funds; receiving a reward is not the same as withdrawing the advertised account balance or controlling a live brokerage deposit.
Rewards are conditional on the relevant objectives and terms. The research reviewed does not independently verify payout reliability, payout denial rates, pass rates, or typical trader earnings. FTMO’s own product and marketing claims should be identified as company statements, not independent outcome evidence.
Review the current terms and be prepared to:
- complete identity verification;
- meet the applicable objectives and account rules;
- provide required payment and account information;
- respond to verification or compliance requests.
Check the current terms for the exact product you select. Product features and reward conditions can change.

Trading restrictions to understand
FTMO’s product and terms explain its simulated-trading service, but a general statement that a strategy is permitted should not replace checking the rules for the chosen product. The research reviewed confirms that rules can differ; it did not establish an exhaustive current comparison of all account-type restrictions.
Before purchasing, confirm the current rules for:
- news trading and holding positions overnight or over weekends;
- expert advisers, other automation, and copy trading;
- account sharing or another person trading for you;
- the loss-limit calculation and treatment of open positions and trading costs;
- any conduct or trading activity the terms prohibit.
Save the applicable terms and account-specific instructions, and ask FTMO for written clarification if a rule affects your normal strategy.

- You already have a tested strategy. An evaluation is not a substitute for learning basic risk management.
- You can follow fixed limits. You need to understand the loss objectives and product rules before trading.
- You understand the simulated model. You are buying an evaluation, not a conventional live capital account.
- You can afford the fee. Treat it as money you may not recover, particularly for 1-Step.
- Your style fits the rules. Check applicable restrictions before choosing a product.
Where FTMO may be a poor fit
- You need guaranteed access to live capital or a live brokerage account.
- You expect every product’s fee to be refunded after passing.
- You need a broker to hold money in your name.
- You cannot tolerate strict evaluation objectives or compliance checks.
- You are relying on one lucky trade to meet the target.
FTMO scam complaints: what they usually mean
A complaint about a failed account, a denied reward, or a rule dispute is worth examining, but it is not by itself proof of a scam. Check what the applicable terms said, whether the rule was clear, and what documentation is available. The research reviewed does not independently establish how often traders pass or how reliably payout requests are handled.
Likewise, company-reported customer or reward totals and positive reviews do not establish typical outcomes or independently verify payout reliability. FTMO’s disclosures explain the stated business model; they are not an independent audit of trader results or payout liabilities.
How to reduce your risk before buying
- Read the current product rules and terms. Confirm the objectives and restrictions for 1-Step or 2-Step rather than relying on old screenshots or videos.
- Compare the products. Check stages, targets, loss limits, minimum-day or consistency rules, and fee-refund conditions.
- Calculate what you can lose. The nominal account balance is simulated; the fee is real money and repeated attempts can add to your costs.
- Ask about edge cases in writing. Be specific about news, overnight holding, automation, copy trading, and your normal position-sizing pattern.
- Check availability and payment terms. Confirm the current checkout, eligibility, and terms for your location.
- Keep records. Save the rules, terms, account instructions, trade records, and support responses.
- Do not borrow the fee. Passing is uncertain and any reward is conditional.
Final assessment
FTMO describes its standard Challenge as a simulated-trading evaluation and reward service, not a live brokerage account funded with client deposits. The research reviewed does not substantiate calling it a scam, but it also does not independently establish payout reliability, pass rates, or typical participant earnings.
Rank #4
For a trader who understands the simulated model, can afford the fee, and has a strategy compatible with the selected product’s rules, FTMO may be worth considering as an evaluation service. It is not a fit for someone seeking a protected investment account, guaranteed funding, or unrestricted trading.
FAQ
Is FTMO a scam?
The research reviewed does not substantiate calling FTMO a scam. FTMO describes a paid simulated-trading evaluation, but the reviewed evidence does not independently establish payout reliability or trader outcomes.
Is FTMO a regulated broker?
FTMO’s Terms and Conditions describe simulated-trading services and say it does not act as a broker or accept deposits. Check relevant rules in your country; this does not establish a comprehensive regulatory status for every jurisdiction.
Does FTMO give traders real money to trade?
No. FTMO says the evaluation uses simulated trading and fictitious funds. Eligible participants may receive monetary rewards under the applicable terms, but the nominal account balance is not cash deposited in their name.
Is the FTMO fee refundable?

Best Value
What are FTMO’s 1-Step and 2-Step targets?
FTMO’s Trading Objectives page retrieved in 2026 lists a 10% Challenge target for 1-Step, and 10% for the 2-Step Challenge plus 5% for Verification. The same page lists a 10% maximum loss and at least four trading days in each 2-Step evaluation stage. Check the current page for the selected product’s full rules.
Does FTMO guarantee a reward if an account is profitable?
No. Eligibility depends on meeting the applicable objectives and terms. Profitability alone does not establish that a reward is due.
Is FTMO suitable for beginners?
A paid evaluation may be a poor way to learn basic trading and risk management. A demo account and a tested strategy can help you understand your approach before risking an evaluation fee.
Can FTMO traders use expert advisers or trade news?
Check the current rules for the exact product and account type. The research reviewed did not establish an exhaustive current comparison of these restrictions, so confirm your intended approach with FTMO before purchase.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: FTMO describes a simulated-trading evaluation service, not a live brokerage account. Treat the fee as money you may not recover, distinguish the 1-Step and 2-Step refund rules, and remember that FTMO’s company statements are not independent evidence of pass rates or payout reliability.
