The Humane Ai Pin is no longer a functioning connected product. Humane stopped taking new orders on February 18, 2025, and shut down the servers that powered the device at noon Pacific time on February 28, 2025. HP acquired selected Humane assets—including the CosmOS platform, more than 300 patents and patent applications, and some employees—but not an ongoing consumer Ai Pin business.
For owners, that means the Pin’s core services are gone. For HP, the technology has become part of a workplace-AI effort called HP IQ rather than a revived wearable.

What happened to the Humane Ai Pin?
Humane announced on February 18, 2025, that it was winding down the consumer Ai Pin business and immediately stopping new sales. The service ended at 12:00 p.m. Pacific time on February 28, 2025.
Once the shutdown took effect, the Ai Pin could no longer connect to Humane’s servers. That ended the cloud-dependent features that made it a connected AI device, including:

Humane said limited offline functions, such as checking the battery level, could remain. So “bricked” is an imprecise description if it suggests that every unit stopped powering on. The more accurate description is that the Ai Pin lost its defining connected services and could no longer perform its main job.
Humane also said remaining customer data on its servers—including personally identifiable information—would be permanently deleted after the February 28 shutdown. The deadline has passed, so owners should not assume that .Center or old cloud content can still be accessed or recovered. Humane’s shutdown notice and consumer FAQ contain the company’s original instructions.
Refunds were limited by the purchase date
Humane did not announce a universal refund or trade-in program for every Ai Pin owner. Its published policy tied product-refund eligibility to the original shipment date and the normal 90-day return period.

Devices shipped before November 15, 2024, were not eligible under that policy.
The FAQ also separated several other refund situations:
- Uncompleted orders: Orders that had not completed onboarding were to be canceled and fully refunded.
- Subscriptions: Prepaid subscription amounts covering time after the shutdown were to receive prorated refunds.
- Charge Cases: Customers still waiting for a replacement Charge Case were to receive a refund for the portion of the purchase price allocated to that case after February 28, 2025.
Those rules were Humane’s published policy at the time. They did not establish that HP assumed all Humane refund, warranty, or customer-service obligations.
Can an Ai Pin use another carrier or phone number?
No. Moving the device to another cellular provider was not a practical workaround. Humane said the Ai Pin could not be used with another carrier after its service ended, and its service did not provide a conventional mobile number that could simply be ported elsewhere.

Owners should also avoid unsafe attempts to modify the hardware or remove its battery. Humane recommended recycling the device through an appropriate e-waste channel rather than putting it in ordinary household trash.
What did HP actually buy?
HP’s announcement described an asset acquisition, not a continuation of the consumer Ai Pin line. HP said it acquired:
- The CosmOS AI platform
- More than 300 patents and patent applications
- Related AI capabilities and intellectual property
- A group of Humane engineers, architects, product innovators, and other personnel
HP said the acquired personnel would join its Technology and Innovation Organization to form a new AI innovation group initially called HP IQ. HP’s 2025 annual report says the acquisition was completed and HP IQ was formed.
Technology and business publications reported the transaction value as $116 million. That figure was reported by outlets including TechCrunch and Axios; HP’s cited announcement emphasized the assets and employees rather than stating the price.

The distinction matters financially. Buying valuable software, patents, and personnel does not mean buying every company obligation or preserving the product that generated those assets. The public announcements do not establish that HP acquired every Humane asset, assumed every Ai Pin liability, or continued the hardware business.

What is CosmOS?
Humane presented CosmOS as a software foundation for AI computing across devices. Its intended role included AI agents, orchestration, actions, and connections between hardware and AI services. Humane’s original platform vision was broader than a single wearable.
HP’s later public products, however, are focused on workplace computing and local AI. The available announcements do not establish that HP is operating a general-purpose wearable version of CosmOS or that HP IQ is a one-for-one rebranding of CosmOS.
What is HP IQ in 2026?
As of August 2026, HP presents HP IQ as a workplace intelligence layer for HP PCs and connected workplace devices—not as a replacement Ai Pin.

HP’s HP IQ product page identifies supported HP EliteBook X G2 Next Gen AI PCs at launch, subject to configuration requirements. HP has also described a broader rollout involving PCs, desktops, Poly meeting devices, printers, and other workplace hardware. Some additional devices were described as rolling out during the second half of 2026, so availability should not be assumed to be universal.
HP’s 2026 announcement is available in its HP IQ connected-ecosystem release. Nothing in the reviewed HP announcements identifies a revived Ai Pin, new HP wearable using the original hardware, or direct consumer successor.

The acquisition illustrates the difference between a failed consumer product and valuable underlying technology. Humane’s Ai Pin depended on consumer adoption, a subscription, reliable cloud infrastructure, and a new screenless interaction model. When the service ended, owners lost most of the product’s value.

HP already sells PCs, printers, collaboration equipment, and managed workplace technology. That gives HP a different potential distribution model: AI features can be integrated into devices businesses already buy, administer, and replace. Local processing may also reduce reliance on a single remote service for everyday tasks.
That is an analysis of the strategic fit, not proof that HP IQ will succeed. The acquisition shows that HP saw value in the software, intellectual property, and team even though Humane’s original hardware-and-service proposition did not survive.
The financial lesson for buyers of cloud-dependent hardware
The Ai Pin shutdown is a warning about buying hardware whose essential functions live on a company’s servers.
- Check what works offline. A device that requires a subscription or cloud account may lose its central functions if the service closes.
- Look for export tools. Photos, recordings, notes, and other content should be downloadable in standard formats before a service ends.
- Read return and refund rules. A short return window can matter more than the product’s advertised lifetime.
- Separate hardware ownership from service access. Owning the physical device does not guarantee continued access to the software that makes it useful.
- Consider the company’s incentives. A larger platform company may be better positioned to maintain a service, but that is not a guarantee.
Local AI can reduce cloud dependence, but it does not eliminate business risk. Updates, device compatibility, subscriptions, account systems, and vendor support can still determine whether a product remains useful.
What can replace the Ai Pin?
There is no direct HP replacement for the Ai Pin in the public information available as of August 18, 2026. The closest alternative depends on what the owner actually wanted:

Humane’s consumer Ai Pin business ended in February 2025, and the device’s cloud-dependent core functions ended with it. HP bought selected technology, patents, and personnel—not a functioning consumer wearable business. By 2026, HP’s public successor effort was HP IQ, aimed at workplace PCs and connected devices. For former owners, the practical priorities are understanding the expired refund rules, recognizing that cloud recovery is no longer available, and recycling the hardware safely.
