Anthropic announced Claude Gov on June 6, 2025 as a restricted family of customized Claude models for U.S. national-security customers. Anthropic says the models were already deployed in classified environments and were designed for intelligence analysis, strategic planning, cybersecurity work, threat assessment, and other defense missions.

Claude Gov is not a public chatbot, downloadable model, or ordinary Claude subscription. Access is limited to eligible government organizations through restricted public-sector and secure-cloud channels.

What Claude Gov is

Claude Gov is a custom model family built specifically for U.S. national-security customers. Anthropic’s launch announcement says the models were intended for agencies operating at the highest levels of national security, including classified environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The announcement did not identify model versions, parameter counts, customer agencies, classification levels, pricing, or a public application process. Anthropic directed interested organizations to its public-sector team rather than offering self-service enrollment.

That makes Claude Gov a restricted public-sector launch—not a new consumer product that anyone can access through Claude.ai or the standard Claude API.

Read Anthropic’s launch announcement.

How Claude Gov differs from ordinary Claude

Anthropic describes Claude Gov as specialized rather than simply “smarter” or unrestricted. The company says it was tuned for:

  • Handling classified material with fewer unnecessary refusals
  • Understanding defense and intelligence terminology and context
  • Working with relevant languages and dialects
  • Interpreting complex cybersecurity information

These are Anthropic’s stated capabilities, not independently published benchmark results. The public announcement does not establish that Claude Gov is more accurate in every task or authorized for every military use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Fewer refusals” also does not mean no safety controls. Anthropic says the models underwent rigorous safety testing and remained subject to its responsible-development commitments.

What military and intelligence organizations may use it for

Anthropic’s named missions include:

  • Intelligence analysis
  • Threat assessment
  • Strategic planning
  • Operational support
  • Analysis of defense and intelligence documents
  • Processing large or complex government records
  • Cybersecurity-data interpretation
  • Translation and analysis involving specialized languages or dialects

These descriptions point primarily to analysis and decision support. The launch announcement does not say that Claude Gov independently selects targets, authorizes attacks, controls weapons, or makes final military decisions. A model can assist a mission workflow without being given authority to act autonomously.

Does Claude Gov run on classified networks?

Anthropic says Claude Gov was already deployed by agencies in classified national-security environments. However, it has not publicly disclosed the networks, classification levels, agencies, model versions, or detailed technical controls involved.

That distinction matters. A statement that Claude Gov has been deployed in classified environments should not be expanded into a claim that every Claude Gov deployment can process every classification level or mission dataset.

Cloud and deployment routes

Government buyers may encounter several different ways of deploying Claude. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

Offering or route Intended users Key distinction
Claude Gov U.S. national-security customers Custom models positioned for classified and national-security work
Claude for Government Eligible government organizations Broader public-sector offering, separate from the narrow Claude Gov model family
Claude through Amazon Bedrock Authorized AWS customers Managed cloud route through AWS GovCloud and Bedrock
Claude through Google Vertex AI Authorized Google Cloud customers Separate cloud and compliance route using Vertex AI and Assured Workloads
Palantir-integrated Claude Defense and intelligence workflows Mission-system integration rather than evidence that Palantir owns Claude Gov

AWS Bedrock

Anthropic announced Claude availability through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud for workloads associated with FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Levels 4 and 5. The relevant authorization applies to the documented deployment path and workload; it is not a blanket authorization for every Claude product or every classified use.

See Anthropic’s AWS announcement.

Google Vertex AI

Anthropic has also described Claude availability through Google Cloud Vertex AI for FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Level 2 workloads, using Assured Workloads. This is a separate route from AWS and has different documented coverage.

See the Vertex AI announcement.

FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Levels are not the same thing as classification levels. A cloud authorization does not, by itself, prove that a deployment is approved to process classified information. The agency’s authorization officials, system boundaries, data controls, and mission requirements determine what a particular environment may handle.

The Defense Department agreement

On July 14, 2025, the Defense Department’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office announced partnerships with Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI. Each agreement carried a potential $200 million ceiling.

Anthropic separately described its arrangement as a two-year prototype Other Transaction Agreement. The work includes identifying high-impact Defense Department applications, prototyping systems with Defense Department data, assessing adversarial uses of AI, and exchanging technical and operational feedback.

The $200 million figure is a contract ceiling, not proof that Anthropic received $200 million in revenue or that the department committed to spend the entire amount.

Safety, oversight, and unresolved risks

National-security users need a model that can analyze sensitive information without refusing legitimate work merely because the material is classified. But reducing refusals can increase the risk that a system will provide dangerous assistance involving cyber operations, weapons, surveillance, or sensitive intelligence.

Anthropic has not publicly released a complete Claude Gov system card, full evaluation results, detailed safeguard documentation, or a comprehensive list of policy exceptions. Agencies therefore still need their own testing and controls.

Important failure modes include:

  • Hallucinated intelligence assessments or threat summaries
  • Misinterpretation of ambiguous source material
  • Translation errors in less common languages or dialects
  • Prompt injection hidden in documents
  • Data leakage through tools, logs, exports, or integrations
  • Automation bias among analysts or commanders
  • Confusing model confidence with evidentiary confidence
  • Behavior changes after a model update
  • Inability to reproduce an output after the model or retrieval corpus changes
  • Improper use in targeting or weapons-related decisions

A serious deployment should preserve human authority over consequential decisions and provide audit trails for prompts, retrieved sources, model versions, tool calls, approvals, and downstream actions.

How agencies obtain Claude Gov

There is no public Claude Gov signup, consumer price, downloadable model, or published retail plan. Eligible organizations must work through Anthropic’s public-sector channel and an approved deployment environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before procurement, an agency should establish:

  1. Mission fit: whether the model supports the organization’s documents, terminology, languages, and workflows.
  2. Authorization: whether the intended data is unclassified, controlled unclassified information, FedRAMP High, DoD IL4/IL5, or classified.
  3. Data handling: where prompts and outputs are processed, how long they are retained, and who can access logs or telemetry.
  4. Human oversight: whether outputs remain advisory or can trigger external actions.
  5. Change management: how model updates are tested and approved.
  6. Continuity: what happens if a contract ends, authorization changes, or the model is retired.
  7. Vendor concentration: whether using Anthropic, AWS, Google, Palantir, or another integrator creates costly switching barriers.

Is Claude Gov available to allies or foreign militaries?

The June 2025 announcement specifically describes Claude Gov as being for U.S. national-security customers. Anthropic has discussed broader cooperation with governments and allied democracies, but that does not establish that Claude Gov is generally available to foreign governments or militaries. Any such access would require a separate agreement and authorization.

What about Claude for Government and the $1 deal?

Anthropic and the General Services Administration announced in August 2025 that Claude for Enterprise and Claude for Government were available to all three branches of the U.S. government under a OneGov arrangement for a nominal $1.

That headline price should not be confused with the price of Claude Gov or treated as an all-in cost for usage, implementation, support, security engineering, cloud infrastructure, or classified deployment. Anthropic’s public-sector FAQ separately describes Bedrock usage as typically pay-per-token under standard AWS pricing, with the exact rate depending on the model and deployment.

See the GSA announcement and Anthropic’s public-sector FAQ.

Bottom line

Claude Gov represents Anthropic’s move into specialized national-security AI. Its significance is not that the U.S. military received an unrestricted chatbot. It is that Anthropic created a restricted model family for government missions, claimed deployment in classified environments, and connected that offering to secure infrastructure and Defense Department prototyping.

For buyers, the central question is not whether Claude Gov is available like a consumer subscription. It is whether the model, cloud route, security authorization, data controls, human oversight, and procurement terms match the specific mission.
