Anthropic reportedly brought back Boris Cherny and Cat Wu roughly two weeks after they left the company for Anysphere, the maker of Cursor. The rapid reversal was reported publicly around July 16–17, 2025, but the available reporting does not establish why they returned, whether their compensation changed, or what their new employment terms were.
What happened
Cherny and Wu were senior figures associated with Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent. According to Anthropic’s March 27, 2025 Claude Code webinar, Boris Cherny was identified as Head of Claude Code, while Cat Wu was identified as Head of Product, Claude Code.

Contemporaneous reporting said the pair left Anthropic in early July 2025 to join Anysphere, the company behind Cursor. About two weeks later, they reportedly returned to Anthropic. The “two weeks” description is approximate; the available public sources do not provide a complete day-by-day employment record.
The story circulated publicly on July 16–17, 2025. It is therefore a 2025 talent-mobility story, not a newly reported 2026 event.

Who are Boris Cherny and Cat Wu?
Cherny was Anthropic’s technical leader for Claude Code, while Wu led product for the service. Those titles matter because Claude Code combines model capability with product decisions about developer workflows, codebase context, tools, permissions and reliability.
Neither employee should automatically be described as the sole inventor of Claude Code. Anthropic’s public event page supports their senior product and technical roles, but it does not establish that either person individually created the entire product.
Why the move was strategically important
Claude Code is designed to act as an AI coding agent inside software-development workflows and real codebases. Anthropic’s current pricing information says Claude Code is available through paid Claude plans, with usage limits and additional usage-credit mechanisms.

Cursor is a different kind of product, but a direct competitive destination for developer workflows. Anysphere describes Cursor in its official documentation as a coding editor and agent that can help developers understand codebases, plan and build features, fix bugs and review changes. Cursor is not simply another foundation-model provider: it is an AI-native software-development environment that can work with multiple models.
That made the reported move notable. The employees were not merely changing jobs between unrelated technology companies; they were reportedly moving from leadership roles in one prominent coding product to a rival company building another influential coding environment.
Why did they return?
The public record does not answer that question. The reporting establishes the short-lived move and subsequent return, but it does not disclose compensation, equity, signing bonuses, reporting lines or the precise terms of the reversal.

Several explanations are possible, but remain unverified:

- The employees may have concluded that their authority, responsibilities or product influence were stronger at Anthropic.
- The role at Anysphere may not have matched expectations.
- They may have preferred continuity with Claude Code’s roadmap, team or mission.
- The episode may reflect a broader bidding contest for people with direct experience building successful AI products.
None of those possibilities should be presented as the confirmed reason. There is no reliable public evidence here that Anthropic simply paid more, that Cursor dismissed the pair, or that the employees returned with confidential information.
What the reversal says about the AI labor market
The episode illustrates how competition in artificial intelligence increasingly involves product builders as well as models and computing infrastructure. A coding agent must be useful in daily engineering work, not merely impressive in a demonstration. People who understand how to turn a powerful model into a dependable developer product can therefore be strategically valuable.

It also shows how quickly talent mobility can affect competitive narratives in AI. A move that might be routine in another technology sector became news because Claude Code and Cursor occupy strategically important positions in the software-development market.
Still, the event supports only a narrow conclusion: experienced AI coding-product leaders were valuable and mobile in 2025. It does not prove that all AI workers had extraordinary bargaining power, nor does it show which company ultimately has the better product.

The Information separately reported that Anthropic attributed more than $200 million in annualized revenue to Claude Code in 2025, citing people familiar with the company’s finances. That is a reported company figure, not an audited financial disclosure.

The same publication connected the rehire news with investor enthusiasm around Anthropic and reported discussion of a financing transaction valuing the company at more than $100 billion. That financial context helps explain the attention surrounding Claude Code, but it does not prove that fundraising, valuation or investor pressure caused Cherny and Wu to return.
What this story does not prove
- It does not prove that Anthropic paid more than Anysphere.
- It does not prove that Cursor lost a strategic battle.
- It does not prove that Claude Code is the market leader.
- It does not establish that either employee transferred code, trade secrets or other confidential information.
- It does not show that the employees were unhappy at Anysphere.
- It does not demonstrate an increase or decrease in users, revenue, market share or technical performance for either product.
Why readers should care
For developers and founders, the practical lesson is that AI coding products are becoming businesses built around both technology and specialized execution. For investors and technology professionals, the episode is a reminder that a small number of people closely connected to a fast-growing product can become important competitive assets.
The unusual part was not simply that employees returned to a former employer. It was the speed: a reported move to a direct competitor followed by a return after roughly two weeks. Without public details about the negotiations, the most defensible interpretation is also the simplest one: the companies were competing intensely for high-impact AI talent, and the final outcome remained unsettled until the employees came back.
