It combined Morpheus software, HPE’s HVM virtualization layer, Private Cloud Business Edition, Alletra storage, StoreOnce backup, Aruba networking and migration services. The strategy is designed to let customers run VMware and HVM together, then migrate selectively while adding centralized governance, storage protection and GreenLake consumption options.
The four layers of HPE’s announcement
| Layer | HPE offering | Primary buyer problem |
|---|---|---|
| Virtualization | Morpheus VM Essentials and HVM | VMware licensing pressure and migration risk |
| Cloud management | Morpheus Enterprise Software | Fragmented provisioning, governance and cost control |
| Infrastructure | Private Cloud Business Edition | Scaling compute and storage independently |
| Protection | Alletra guarantees and StoreOnce appliances | Availability, ransomware recovery and backup |
The original announcement is documented in HPE’s May 14, 2025 release. It also included HPE Cloud Platform Services – Virtualization Modernization, HPE Aruba Networking CX 10000 integration and GreenLake consumption. These are connected offerings, not components of a single new appliance.

HPE’s VMware strategy starts with coexistence
Broadcom’s post-acquisition VMware licensing changes made virtualization cost a board-level concern for many enterprises. HPE’s answer is deliberately less disruptive than an overnight hypervisor replacement: Morpheus VM Essentials can manage VMware and HVM environments side by side.
That matters because a hypervisor is tied to operating systems, virtual hardware, storage protocols, network policy, backup APIs, disaster recovery and administrator skills. A unified management interface does not prove feature parity with VMware. Buyers should test application by application, especially where they depend on vMotion, HA, DRS, distributed switching, NSX, specialized devices or VMware-specific backup integrations.

What HVM is
HVM is HPE’s virtualization layer in the Morpheus family. HPE characterizes it as KVM-based, but customers should evaluate HVM as HPE’s supported product rather than assume it behaves exactly like an unmodified upstream KVM deployment. HPE’s current product page lists high availability, live migration within HVM clusters, workload placement, policy-based provisioning and external-storage support; confirm the release-specific compatibility matrix before purchase.
What VM Essentials includes
Launch-era VM Essentials covered HVM and VMware management, self-service cloud consumption, per-socket licensing, Private Cloud Business Edition integration and Alletra Storage MP B10000 integration. HPE’s current packaging describes VM Essentials as including HVM plus VMware, role-based governance, basic scripting, MCP-server integration for AI operations, core integrations and OVS networking. Containers and Kubernetes are explicitly not included in that tier, according to the current HPE page: HPE Morpheus Software.
Morpheus Enterprise is the control plane, not the hypervisor
Morpheus Enterprise is the broader hybrid-cloud management layer. It orchestrates virtual machines, containers, bare-metal workloads, private infrastructure and public clouds. Its functions include provisioning, orchestration, policy governance, automation, migration, cost analytics, rightsizing, chargeback and FinOps.
HPE claimed approximately 150× faster application deployment and up to 30% lower cloud costs through analytics-powered rightsizing in the 2025 announcement. Those are HPE claims based on HPE’s stated methodology, not independent benchmark results. The current page claims more than 90 integrations, including VMware vSphere, Nutanix, OpenStack, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible, ServiceNow, Veeam and Rubrik. Confirm which integrations are included in each edition and whether plugins or separate licenses are required.

The 90% licensing claim needs a customer-specific model
HPE says Morpheus VM Essentials can reduce VM licensing costs by up to 90% compared with unspecified market licensing data. The company says the figure comes from internal analysis, excludes discounts and can change. It is not a universal price guarantee.
Per-socket pricing can be attractive on high-core-count servers, but the relevant comparison is total cost of ownership. Include current VMware subscriptions and support, Morpheus software, hardware, management-plane licensing, backup, networking, migration services, training and the cost of running VMware and HVM simultaneously during a phased transition.
- Count physical sockets and cores per socket in the proposed design.
- Check whether HPE support, upgrades and management features are included in the quoted edition.
- Model hardware changes, cloud consumption and temporary dual licensing.
- Use measured VM utilization rather than theoretical capacity.
Private Cloud Business Edition changes the infrastructure equation
Private Cloud Business Edition uses HPE’s disaggregated hyperconverged approach, allowing compute and storage to scale independently instead of forcing both to grow together. That can reduce stranded capacity when one resource expands faster than the other. It can also add design and operational complexity compared with a small, fixed appliance.

HPE claims up to 2.5× lower total cost of ownership, supported by Enterprise Strategy Group economic validation and HPE analysis. It also claims AI-assisted setup and lifecycle management and AIOps that can predict and prevent up to 86% of issues. Treat each number as a vendor claim tied to stated methodology, not as a guaranteed result for every deployment.

GreenLake changes the commercial model rather than removing economic trade-offs. Review minimum commitments, metering, capacity buffers, support charges, ownership, renewal increases, termination costs and the consequences of moving workloads elsewhere. Storage guarantees and new backup appliances
Alletra Storage MP B10000
HPE expanded Alletra Storage MP B10000 integrations and announced outcome-based guarantees:
- Zero Data Loss and Downtime Guarantee: based on high availability and synchronous replication using active peer persistence.
- Cyber Resiliency Guarantee: access to recoverable immutable snapshots and access to recovery experts within 30 minutes or less after a reported ransomware incident.
- Energy Consumption Guarantee: operation within a specified power threshold.
These are contractual commitments, not merely technical features. Request the legal terms, exclusions, required architecture, support tier, geography and customer obligations. “Zero data loss” should not be interpreted as an unconditional promise for every workload or failure scenario. The announcement is at HPE’s Alletra and StoreOnce release.

The StoreOnce 3720 and 3760 were positioned for small and medium-sized businesses, remote offices, branch offices and edge sites. HPE stated capacity from 18 TB to 216 TB locally, up to 648 TB with optional cloud storage, typical 20:1 data reduction and backup speeds up to 25 TB per hour. The appliances include multifactor authentication, encryption and immutability. HPE also estimated 67% higher density and 29% lower power consumption than prior models.

The original release projected availability in early Q3 2025. That date should not be treated as current worldwide availability in 2026; verify the regional catalog and quote. Capacity, reduction and throughput depend on workload, configuration and backup software.

HPE integrated Morpheus with Aruba Networking CX 10000 for microsegmentation and networking services. HPE said moving selected security processing into the switch can reduce hypervisor overhead and improve performance, claiming up to 48% lower TCO and up to 10× higher performance. Those are configuration-specific HPE claims, not independent benchmarks. The design introduces dependencies on particular Aruba hardware, network policies and operational expertise.
HPE Cloud Platform Services – Virtualization Modernization addresses the practical barrier to leaving VMware. Services cover estate assessment, landing zones, re-platforming, data migration, infrastructure modernization, staff training and post-migration management. The useful promise is a staged operating model, not a one-click conversion.

Who should consider HPE’s approach?
Potentially strong fit
- Organizations already standardized on HPE infrastructure and seeking integrated compute, storage, networking and support.
- VMware customers that need a coexistence period and a guided path to HVM.
- Teams that want centralized policy, provisioning and FinOps across private and public clouds.
- Buyers that value GreenLake consumption or independently scalable compute and storage.
Potentially poor fit
- Small, static environments where conventional HCI simplicity is cheaper.
- Organizations requiring broad neutral-hardware freedom or mature VMware-specific tooling.
- Teams without capacity to validate backup, DR, networking and guest-OS compatibility.
- Buyers seeking transparent public list prices or a platform with no HPE commercial relationship.
Alternatives to compare
Broadcom VMware Cloud Foundation preserves VMware continuity; Nutanix Cloud Platform and AHV offer an integrated HCI alternative; Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization suits VM modernization tied to Kubernetes; Microsoft Azure Local targets Microsoft-centric hybrid infrastructure; and Scale Computing focuses on simpler edge and SMB deployments. These platforms overlap, but they do not have identical operating models or feature sets.
Due-diligence checklist before signing
- Obtain the exact Morpheus edition, socket definition, subscription term, support level and renewal language.
- Map guest operating systems, virtual hardware, appliances, databases, passthrough devices and licensing dependencies.
- Test HA, live migration, storage protocols, networking, microsegmentation, monitoring, backup and disaster recovery in a proof of concept.
- Confirm every third-party integration, supported hardware model and version-specific limitation.
- Run a TCO model covering dual-running VMware, migration labor, training, hardware, GreenLake charges and exit costs.
- Request the Alletra guarantee contracts, exclusions, recovery obligations and architecture prerequisites.
- Measure usable capacity after RAID, replication and deduplication; do not rely on raw StoreOnce numbers.
- Define rollback, downtime tolerance, data validation and ownership of migration defects.
The Bottom Line
HPE’s May 2025 “morphing” is best understood as a coordinated private-cloud strategy: Morpheus supplies management and a VMware-compatible migration path, HVM supplies the alternative virtualization layer, Private Cloud Business Edition supplies the infrastructure, and Alletra, StoreOnce and Aruba address protection and networking. It may lower licensing and operating costs, but only a workload-level proof of concept and a complete TCO and contract review can establish whether it is a better choice for a particular enterprise.
