The Court found large-scale irregularities and missing records had compromised the process beyond repair. That finding did not mean every affected employee had individually been found to cheat: the Court concluded the selection as a whole could not be reliably salvaged.
Why the Supreme Court cancelled the 2016 selection
The West Bengal Central School Service Commission began the recruitment process in 2016. It covered assistant teachers for Classes IX–X and XI–XII, as well as Group C and Group D non-teaching roles. Recommendations followed in 2017–2018. Unsuccessful and wait-listed applicants challenged the process in 2021–2022.
The Supreme Court’s 3 April 2025 judgment recounted several serious problems: original OMR answer sheets and scanned mirror images could not be found; appointments had been made beyond the declared vacancies and outside the panels; some candidates had submitted blank OMR sheets; and rank and merit-list procedures had been compromised.
The Court said it could not confidently separate valid appointments from invalid ones because the process and the records needed to verify it had been compromised. It described the selection as “tainted beyond resolution” and upheld cancellation of the entire process rather than limiting relief to individuals specifically identified as tainted.
The 25,753 figure, as described in the Supreme Court’s judgment, is the total number of appointments affected in this SSC case—not a count of teachers alone. It includes non-teaching employees. Nor does the mass cancellation establish that every person whose appointment was voided personally participated in wrongdoing.
What happened to affected assistant teachers
On 17 April 2025, the Supreme Court clarified a limited arrangement for assistant teachers in Classes IX–X and XI–XII whom it treated as untainted: they could participate in a fresh recruitment process. The order directed that an advertisement be issued by 31 May 2025 and that recruitment be completed by 31 December 2025. It gave eligible candidates no special right or advantage in that competition, and the arrangement did not cover Group C or Group D non-teaching posts.
In August 2025, the Court dismissed the State’s review plea rather than reopening the case on its merits. India Today reported that the Court viewed the plea as an attempt to rehear matters already considered and pointed to missing original or mirror OMR records as a major obstacle to verification.
On 28 November 2025, the Supreme Court sent remaining recruitment-related matters to the Calcutta High Court, with directions distinguishing candidates previously found untainted from those considered tainted. India Today reported the next day that the SSC had released a list of 1,806 teachers identified as tainted. That figure refers to the reported list, not to all appointments cancelled in the 2016 process.

Do not confuse this case with the separate primary-teacher ruling
A different case involved about 32,000 primary teachers appointed after the 2014 Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). On 3 December 2025, a Calcutta High Court division bench set aside a 2023 single-judge order that had cancelled those appointments. That is a separate recruitment and a different court outcome; it does not reverse the Supreme Court’s decision on the 2016 SSC process.

What is known about the fresh recruitment deadline
The Supreme Court set 31 December 2025 as the deadline to complete the replacement recruitment for the specified assistant-teacher posts. The available information does not establish whether recruitment was completed by that date or what later proceedings determined. The deadline should therefore not be mistaken for confirmation that the process finished, or that it was delayed or abandoned.

The order made a selection-process finding with consequences for appointments; it was not a finding that every affected employee had committed fraud. The distinction matters when describing the people who lost their posts: the Court’s reason for cancelling the process was that the evidence and records were too compromised to reliably identify and retain only valid appointments.
The reported decisions establish the employment consequences and the route into fresh recruitment for a specified group of assistant teachers. They do not establish individual severance payments, back pay, benefits, household losses, or the financial position of affected workers. Those details should not be inferred from the number of appointments cancelled.
