How to Recover Money from a Crypto Scam: Steps to Take Now

If you sent cryptocurrency to a scammer, act quickly: contact the sending provider, preserve transaction details, report the fraud, and avoid anyone demanding an upfront fee to recover your money.

If you sent cryptocurrency to a scammer, contact the exchange or crypto ATM operator you used immediately, report the transfer as fraud, and ask whether it can be stopped or reversed. Recovery is uncertain: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says crypto payments lack the same legal protections as credit and debit card payments, so getting the money back can be difficult.

What to do immediately after a crypto scam

  1. Contact the provider you used to send the crypto. Use the provider’s official app or find its website and contact details independently. Tell it the transfer was fraudulent and ask whether it can be stopped, reversed, or refunded. If you used a crypto ATM, contact its operator. The FTC recommends contacting the company or ATM operator as soon as possible: What To Do if You Were Scammed.
  2. Save the transaction and communication records. Keep the transaction hash, sending and receiving wallet addresses, date and time, amount and type of crypto, exchange or ATM details, receipts, messages, and any names or account identifiers the scammer used. These details can help the provider and authorities understand what happened.
  3. Secure accounts the scammer may have accessed. If you shared a password or gave someone access to an exchange, email, or other account, contact that service through its official channel. Change compromised passwords and turn on two-factor authentication where available, as the FTC advises in its scam-response guidance.
  4. Contact every other payment provider involved. If you also paid by bank transfer, payment app, or wire, report the fraud to each provider immediately and ask whether that payment can be reversed or refunded.
  5. Report the scam. Use the reporting channels below, and keep copies of any confirmation numbers or submissions.

Can you get cryptocurrency back after a scam?

Possibly, but do not count on it. The FTC’s guidance is direct: “Cryptocurrency payments don’t have the same legal protections as credit and debit cards do, so it can be hard to get your money back.” Contacting the sending provider quickly is still worthwhile, but no report, investigation, or blockchain tracing should be treated as a guarantee that funds will be returned.

What may be possible depends on the transfer and the provider’s handling of it. The available guidance does not establish whether a particular exchange or ATM operator can freeze, reverse, or refund a specific transaction. Ask the provider what it can do in your case, and be wary of anyone claiming that tracing alone ensures recovery.

Where to report a crypto scam in the United States

The FTC lists these reporting and contact routes for cryptocurrency scams: Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the exchange you used to send the funds. Which agency is relevant can depend on the facts, including whether the scam involved an investment or securities offering. Filing a report is not the same as filing a reimbursement request, and a report alone does not guarantee repayment. See the FTC’s What To Know About Cryptocurrency and Scams for its reporting guidance.

How to spot a crypto recovery scam

People who have already lost money to a scam may be targeted again by someone claiming to retrieve it. The person may pose as a government agency or trusted organization, promise to recover the funds, then ask for an upfront fee or financial-account information. The FTC warns: “Don’t trust calls, letters, emails, texts, or messages on social media from someone who says they can recover money you lost in a scam for a fee.”

  • Do not pay a retainer, tax, processing charge, or other upfront amount to an unsolicited recovery contact.
  • Do not share bank, payment, identity, or account details with someone who pitches recovery.
  • Verify any organization independently; do not rely on contact details or links supplied by the person making the offer.
  • Report recovery-scam attempts as well as the original scam.

The FTC says legitimate government agencies and organizations do not require payment or financial-account details to help obtain a refund, and do not guarantee recovery. Read its Refund and Recovery Scams guidance and its crypto recovery alert for more detail.
