Powerball says online ticket sales are limited to residents of the jurisdiction selling the ticket, and cross-jurisdiction internet or mail sales are restricted. If you travel to a US jurisdiction that sells Powerball, you may be able to buy in person from an authorized retailer, subject to that jurisdiction’s age rules. An Australian service may instead offer a foreign-matched entry: its provider buys and owns the official ticket and handles any prize under its own terms.
Can you buy an official US Powerball ticket online from Australia?
Powerball’s official FAQ says that some lotteries sell tickets online, but the service is available only to residents of the selling jurisdiction. It also says sales across jurisdictional borders by internet or mail are restricted. Powerball warns that a lottery may refuse to pay a prize for a ticket bought through a website other than its own.
That means an Australian website offering an entry should not be assumed to be selling you an official ticket in your own name. The arrangement may instead be a foreign-matched service, which is materially different.

Buying a ticket during a visit to the United States
Powerball says visitors from places where tickets are not sold, including outside the United States, can buy from a retailer licensed or authorized by the selling jurisdiction if they meet its legal age requirement. Cut-off times vary by jurisdiction, so confirm the deadline with the relevant lottery or retailer before the draw.

How an Australian matched-ticket service differs
The Australian Government’s January 2026 review describes foreign-matched lotteries as services where an Australian provider takes a customer’s chosen numbers, buys a matching ticket in the overseas draw, and supplies a scanned copy. In that model, the provider owns the overseas ticket; the customer’s entitlement and payment depend on the provider’s arrangement, and foreign taxes may be deducted.
The Lottery Office says its USA Power Lotto product matches US Powerball tickets that it buys and retains, and that it pays an amount equal to prize money it collects. That is the company’s description of its own service, not independent confirmation of current authorization or evidence that a customer owns a US ticket. Read the specific provider’s current terms rather than assuming all services work alike.

What Australian rules say about online lottery services
The Australian Communications and Media Authority says the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it illegal for gambling providers to offer some online services to people in Australia, including betting on the outcome of a lottery. This is general regulator guidance, accessed October 8, 2026; it is not an individual legal assessment of every foreign-matched service. Check current ACMA information and the provider’s current authorization before paying.
What to verify before paying
- What you are buying: an official ticket in your possession, or a contractual entry tied to a ticket held by a provider.
- Ownership and evidence: who owns the ticket and whether you receive a scan or other documentation.
- Prize handling: who claims the prize, how the amount due to you is determined, when and how it is paid, and what deductions can apply.
- Provider status and terms: verify current Australian authorization and read the terms that govern your specific entry, including dispute procedures.
- Eligibility and timing: check applicable age and location restrictions and the sales cut-off, which varies by US jurisdiction.
Is the draw actually worth $1 billion?
The title alone does not establish a draw date or a current jackpot. Powerball says jackpot estimates depend on factors including ticket sales and the annuity factor. Check the official Powerball site for the specific draw’s date and advertised jackpot before making a decision; do not rely on an undated $1 billion figure.
