How Treasury Yields Affect Brokerage Stocks and Their Earnings

Treasury yields influence brokerage earnings through asset returns, funding costs and customer cash choices. The impact depends on each firm’s balance sheet and pricing.

Treasury yields can affect brokerage earnings, but they do not translate directly into a fixed profit change or stock-price move. The main channels are interest earned on assets, interest paid to fund those assets, and customer decisions about where to keep uninvested cash. A brokerage’s balance sheet, pricing choices and customer behavior determine how those channels combine.

How do Treasury yields affect brokerage stocks?

Treasury yields are market benchmarks, not the rates a brokerage automatically earns or pays. A company’s earnings depend on the yields and rates attached to its own assets and funding, the amounts involved, and how quickly each reprices. Treasury publishes yields for specific maturities, so any market comparison should identify both the tenor and observation date; there is no universal earnings response to a given Treasury yield.

The most direct earnings measure is net interest revenue: interest earned on assets minus interest paid on funding. Schwab says its interest-earning assets include cash and cash equivalents, segregated cash and investments, margin loans, investment securities and bank loans. Its funding sources include bank deposits, client brokerage payables, amounts due to brokers and clearing organizations, Federal Home Loan Bank borrowing, other short-term borrowing and long-term debt. Schwab notes that asset yields and liability rates can change at different times or by different amounts.Schwab 2025 Form 10-K

Why the yield curve and repricing matter

Short-term rates can affect floating-rate assets and deposit costs relatively quickly. Longer-term yields can influence securities purchases and reinvestment, as well as the appeal of fixed-income alternatives to customers. The size and timing of those effects depend on a firm’s particular asset and funding mix; a Treasury maturity by itself does not reveal a brokerage’s interest-rate exposure.

Do higher interest rates help brokerage firms?

They can help when asset income rises more, or sooner, than funding costs. But the opposite can happen if funding costs catch up quickly, if the firm pays more to retain customer cash, or if customers move cash into alternatives that reduce the firm’s balances or increase its need for more expensive funding.

Customer cash can change the outcome

When short-term rates rise quickly, money-market funds and fixed-income investments may look more attractive than a brokerage’s cash-sweep option. Schwab says this can prompt clients to move cash out of sweep products, reducing interest-earning balances or increasing reliance on higher-cost funding. If those alternatives later become less attractive relative to sweep rates, cash may return, but the timing and amount vary by firm and customer.Schwab 2025 Form 10-K

Firms can change what they pay and how they fund

Brokerages may set some customer cash and loan rates themselves, and can choose among different funding sources. Those decisions can soften or amplify a market-rate change. A firm with more floating-rate assets may respond differently from one with more fixed-rate securities, and a firm’s sweep design affects whether customer cash sits on its balance sheet or at a partner bank.

Why does Schwab make money when interest rates rise?

Schwab’s interest revenue is driven by the spread between yields on its assets and rates paid on liabilities, not by Treasury yields alone. Its reported results show why the distinction matters: net interest revenue was $11.750 billion in 2025, compared with $9.144 billion in 2024, and net interest margin was 2.74% in 2025, compared with 2.12% in 2024. These are Schwab-specific annual figures from its 2025 Form 10-K, not industry averages or a measure of the effect of any single Treasury maturity.Schwab 2025 Form 10-K

Schwab said its net interest revenue increased in 2025 even as market rates had fallen from earlier highs. It attributed the result to lower supplemental funding balances and lower rates paid on funding, as well as growth in margin and bank lending, which more than offset lower yields on floating-rate assets. This is a concrete example of funding costs, lending balances and asset yields working together rather than moving in lockstep.

How interest rates affect net interest income at different brokerages

Company disclosures show that the same broad rate environment can reach earnings through different business structures. Robinhood, for example, describes Cash Sweep as an off-balance-sheet amount deposited at partner banks. Its earnings from the program depend on the rate received from banks less the rate paid to users, and its filing says it can adjust the user rate for most of the program as bank rates change.Robinhood first-quarter 2025 Form 10-Q

Robinhood’s first-quarter 2026 earnings release said it moved more than $6 billion of Cash Sweep balances into customer free-credit balances in February 2026 to help fund margin lending. That illustrates that a firm’s allocation of customer balances can change alongside rate conditions; the move is not a general measure of industry cash migration.Robinhood first-quarter 2026 earnings release

The firms’ rate-sensitivity disclosures also are not directly interchangeable. Robinhood’s cited filing excludes Cash Sweep from its short-term rate sensitivity analysis because most of the program’s spread can be adjusted. Schwab discusses repricing across on-balance-sheet assets and liabilities and the effect of client cash allocation. A simple ranking based on one disclosed sensitivity number would miss these structural differences.Robinhood first-quarter 2025 Form 10-Q Schwab 2025 Form 10-K

What to compare when evaluating brokerage earnings

To assess how a rate move could affect a brokerage, compare disclosures for the same reporting period and examine the business mechanics rather than relying on a single Treasury yield:

  • Net interest revenue and margin: Review annual and sequential changes, not just a headline rate-sensitivity estimate.
  • Asset mix: Identify cash, securities, margin lending and bank lending, and note which balances are fixed-rate or floating-rate and when they reprice.
  • Funding mix and cost: Look at customer deposits and brokerage payables, sweep arrangements, wholesale borrowing and debt, including the rates paid and any changes in supplemental funding.
  • Customer cash behavior: Track sweep balances, movement to money-market funds or fixed income, deposits and withdrawals.
  • Pricing and pass-through: Compare rates paid to customers, rates received from partner banks and rates charged on loans.
  • Sensitivity assumptions: Check whether management assumes a static balance sheet, what balances are included or excluded, and which rate changes the estimate models.
  • Other earnings drivers: Separate interest effects from trading activity, asset-based fees, customer growth and expenses before drawing conclusions about overall results.

A sensitivity estimate is an assumption-based scenario, not a forecast that a company’s earnings or share price will change by that amount. The sources cited here do not establish a sector-wide estimate of brokerage earnings sensitivity to Treasury yields or a Treasury-yield-to-EPS coefficient.

Do Treasury yields predict brokerage stock prices?

No single Treasury yield reliably predicts a brokerage stock’s direction. Earnings are only one influence on a share price, and a company’s interest income can rise or fall differently from market yields because of balance-sheet composition, funding costs, pricing and customer cash flows. Trading activity, fees, growth and expenses also affect results. Treat Treasury rates as context for analyzing a firm’s disclosed business—not as a standalone stock signal.
