Before buying a DeFi token, find out what holding it actually gives you, how its code and supply work, who can change its contracts, and whether there is enough real liquidity to trade it. Then check the people and claims behind the project and consider the law that applies where you are. This is a diligence checklist, not a guarantee that a token is safe or suitable for you.
What rights does the token give you?
Start with the token holder’s actual rights, not the label on the project’s website. A token described as “utility,” “governance,” or “community” may not confer the practical benefits those words suggest.

- Does holding it provide access to a product or service, a role in governance, or a way to pay for something?
- Can you redeem it for anything, and if so, what are the conditions and who must honor the redemption?
- Does the token give you a claim on revenue, assets, or a service—or does the project merely describe a hoped-for future use?
- What connects the token to the product or service, and what happens to that connection if the project changes or stops operating?
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advises buyers to understand the rights attached to a token and how it relates to the product or service being offered. If the project’s documents do not answer these questions clearly, treat that as missing information rather than assuming the most favorable interpretation.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan you inspect the code and security review?
Check whether the blockchain is public, whether the relevant code is published, and whether an independent cybersecurity review exists. A review is useful only to the extent that you can tell what it examined.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Identify the contracts involved in the token and the DeFi service you would use.
- Look for public code and check whether it corresponds to the contracts actually deployed, rather than a different version or an earlier release.
- For an audit or other security review, check who performed it, when, which contracts and code version it covered, and whether findings and subsequent changes are disclosed.
- Look for known unresolved findings or important code changes made after the review.
An independent review is evidence that specified code was examined; it cannot prove that the system will never be exploited or fail. A review of one contract or version does not automatically cover other contracts or later changes.
How are supply and token distribution likely to change?
Do not rely on a headline maximum-supply figure alone. Examine current circulating and total supply alongside the rules and schedules that can change how many tokens exist or become available to trade.

- Find the stated total and circulating supply, and note how each is defined.
- Check whether contracts or other disclosed mechanisms can mint or burn tokens, and who can trigger those actions.
- Review allocations to founders, insiders, investors, the project treasury, and the public where those figures are disclosed.
- Find lockup, vesting, and unlock schedules. Note the dates and amounts of future releases if published.
- Check whether issuance rules or distribution schedules can be changed, and who has authority to change them.
The SEC Commissioner’s disclosure checklist identifies supply, issuance, insider holdings, and distribution schedules as relevant disclosure topics. These details matter together: a maximum supply does not tell you when tokens may enter circulation, who may receive them, or whether issuance rules can change.
Who controls the contract?
Find out who can administer or upgrade the contracts and how decisions about the project are made. A claim of decentralised governance is not enough by itself to establish how much influence token holders have in practice.

- Identify any administrator, upgrade, or other privileged contract permissions, and who holds them.
- Check whether a single party or a group must approve changes, and whether any delay or other disclosed safeguard applies.
- Read how proposals are submitted and decided: who may vote, how voting power is calculated, and what threshold is needed for a proposal to pass.
- Compare those procedures with disclosed insider holdings. Ask whether voting is meaningfully distributed or concentrated.
Governance documents can describe a process without showing every permission embedded in the deployed contracts. The SEC Commissioner’s disclosure checklist includes governance procedures and insider holdings; verifying asset-specific contract powers requires inspecting the relevant contract information directly.
Is there enough liquidity for the trade you have in mind?
A displayed or quoted price does not establish that you can buy or sell the amount you want at that price. Check the venues where the token trades and the depth of available liquidity for a transaction of your intended size.

- Look at where trading occurs and whether activity is spread across venues or concentrated in one place.
- Consider whether the available liquidity is deep enough for your intended purchase—and for a possible sale later.
- Account for the possibility that a thin market can make a trade difficult or move the price sharply as orders are filled.
- Be especially cautious with new or thinly traded tokens: the CFTC identifies them as vulnerable to pump-and-dump schemes.
Liquidity is a risk factor, not a guarantee of an exit. The price shown on a screen may not be the price available for your actual transaction.

- Check whether the project identifies the entities and people behind its offering and explains their roles.
- Compare promotional claims with the project’s disclosures about token rights, use of funds, supply, and governance.
- Be wary of pressure to buy quickly, hype presented in place of verifiable information, or guaranteed returns.
The CFTC warns that there is no guaranteed investment or trading strategy. It also puts the risk of buying solely in the hope of selling later at a higher price plainly: “Buying digital coins or tokens only because you expect to sell them at a higher price later is the definition of speculation and carries considerable risk, regardless of how good a white paper, application or business plan sounds.”
What legal rules apply where you are?
Do not treat a project’s description of its token as a legal conclusion. Calling a token “utility” does not, by itself, resolve how it may be treated under securities law. SEC Chairman Jay Clayton made that point in a 2017 statement; it should not be mistaken for a complete legal test.
The SEC and CFTC published an interpretation in March 2026 addressing certain assets and transactions. That does not settle every token’s status: legal treatment depends on the facts and the applicable jurisdiction. If classification or compliance matters to your decision, seek guidance specific to the token and the place where you would acquire or use it.

How can you compare two tokens without turning the checklist into a score?
Use the same questions for each project and compare what is disclosed, what can be verified, and what remains unclear. These are diligence axes, not a scoring model or a recommendation to buy.
- Rights and use: What does a holder actually receive, and how does the token relate to the product or service?
- Code and review: Is the code public, and what deployed contracts and versions did an independent review cover?
- Supply and distribution: What are the supply and issuance rules, who holds allocations, and when are tokens scheduled to unlock?
- Control: Who can administer or upgrade contracts, and how do governance procedures work in practice?
- Market: Where does the token trade, and is liquidity adequate for the transaction you might make?
- Disclosure: Are project claims, people, token rights, and use of funds described clearly enough to verify?
Unanswered questions are part of the comparison. Do not treat an attractive price, a utility label, an audit, or confident promotion as a substitute for understanding the token’s rights and risks.
