To check a Bitcoin payment, search its transaction ID (TXID) in a Bitcoin block explorer, confirm that the expected amount and receiving address appear in its outputs, and review whether it has been included in a block. To trace its movement afterward, follow the specific output into the later transaction input that spends it. You can do this with public information; never enter a seed phrase or private key into an explorer.
What you need to look up a Bitcoin payment
Ask the sender or payment service for the transaction ID, usually abbreviated TXID. It identifies a particular on-chain transaction; it is not a receiving address. A transaction lookup does not require a wallet login. Use the TXID and make sure the explorer is displaying the same network as the payment—Bitcoin mainnet, for example, rather than a test network or another chain. Bitcoin.org explains Bitcoin transaction basics and confirmations in its FAQ.

A TXID lookup shows a public ledger record, not the identity of the person who sent or received funds. Do not provide an explorer with seed words or private keys: neither is needed to search for a public transaction.
How to check the transaction in an explorer
- Get the TXID. Copy it from the sender, wallet, or service that initiated the payment. Check for omitted or mistyped characters.
- Open a Bitcoin block explorer. Search the TXID, and verify that the explorer is set to the network you expect. Explorer interfaces and the transaction details they display vary by provider. Blockchain.com describes its explorer’s stated features.
- Check the transaction record. Review its status, inputs, outputs, fee, and block or confirmation information where available.
- Match the expected payment. Find the output with the expected receiving address and amount. A transaction can contain multiple inputs and outputs, so do not assume one input equals one sender or one output equals one recipient. The Bitcoin developer reference describes transaction inputs and outputs.
How to read confirmation status
An unconfirmed transaction has not yet been included in a block. Once included, it has one confirmation; each subsequent block adds another. Bitcoin.org says blocks arrive approximately every ten minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic. That average is not a promised waiting time, and an individual confirmation can take less or more time. Bitcoin.org’s confirmation FAQ explains the average interval and uncertainty.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
There is no universal confirmation count that is sufficient for every payment. The recipient decides what level of confirmation is acceptable for their risk and policy; a status displayed by an explorer can also change as the chain develops.
How to follow where the bitcoin moved
Bitcoin transactions spend earlier outputs and create new outputs. An output—not an address in isolation—is the unit to follow: it is identified by the transaction that created it and its output index. A later transaction spends it through an input that references that earlier output.

- On the transaction page, identify the output you want to follow, using its address and amount to distinguish it from other outputs.
- Open the prior transaction or output details if the explorer provides a link for them.
- Find a later transaction whose input spends that exact output (the referenced transaction ID and output index), rather than assuming an address-level connection is enough.
- Inspect the later transaction’s outputs to see where it created new spendable value. Repeat the process to continue following a particular output.
This traces on-chain movement, not a person. The ledger records transaction inputs and outputs, not names, and the explorer’s layout may simplify complex transactions. A transaction alone does not establish who controlled an address or who was the real-world recipient.

What to do if the TXID is missing or results differ
- Recheck the TXID and network. A typo or searching the wrong network can make a real transaction appear absent.
- Compare another explorer. A second service provides another view, but both explorers are third parties and may rely on different data sources or render information differently.
- Consider the transaction’s status. A public explorer’s display of unconfirmed transactions depends on its data sources. A missing result by itself does not prove that the transaction was never broadcast.
- For greater independence, consult your own synchronized Bitcoin Core node. Bitcoin Core provides wallet and blockchain data through a graphical interface and command-line/API tools. Its RPC documentation describes transaction lookup and confirmation/block data; an unconfirmed transaction may have no block information, and one outside the node’s mempool may be unknown to that node. See Bitcoin Core’s RPC documentation. Running a node requires installation and synchronization, so it is a more involved option than a one-off public lookup.
Which way of checking fits your needs?
| Method | Best for | What it can show | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public block explorer | Quick, one-off lookup | Transaction fields such as inputs, outputs, fees, and confirmation status, depending on the provider | Convenient third-party view; features and data sources vary. |
| Second public explorer | Checking a missing or unexpected result | A second provider’s rendering and observed status | Useful as a cross-check, but still a third-party service. |
| Your Bitcoin Core node | More self-directed verification | Blockchain and wallet transaction data available to that node | Requires installation and synchronization; an unconfirmed transaction outside its mempool may not be known to it. |
