Bitcoin has no protocol-level undo or chargeback for a confirmed payment. The recipient can choose to return the money, but that return is a new transaction—not a reversal of the original. A confirmed transaction is not absolutely permanent in every conceivable circumstance: an unusual chain reorganization or serious network or implementation problem could change which history is accepted. More confirmations make that increasingly difficult.
What a confirmation means
A Bitcoin transaction has zero confirmations until it is included in a block. Inclusion gives it its first confirmation; each later block adds another. Confirmation is evidence that the transaction is part of the accepted blockchain history, not an unconditional promise that history can never change.

Before a transaction is confirmed, its sender may broadcast a competing transaction that spends the same input. The network ultimately accepts one of those conflicting spends into its chain. Once the payment is included in a block, replacing it requires changing that block’s history and the blocks built on top of it. The Bitcoin.org consumer guidance explains that later confirmations make this harder.
Why confirmed Bitcoin payments are difficult to undo
Bitcoin’s blocks link to earlier blocks through hashes. Changing a transaction in an old block would therefore require rebuilding that block and the blocks that follow it. Proof of work makes the task harder as the chain grows. The Bitcoin Developer Guide’s explanation of the blockchain describes this structure.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
This is practical security, not a mathematical guarantee of permanent finality. The original Bitcoin white paper describes transactions as “computationally impractical to reverse” and bases security on honest participants collectively controlling more computing power than an attacking group. That is a security assumption, not a promise that a reversal is physically impossible. See Satoshi Nakamoto’s 2008 white paper.
A refund is not a reversal or chargeback
If you sent Bitcoin to the wrong person, the network cannot compel that person to return it. You can contact the recipient and ask for a refund; if they agree, they send a separate transaction back to you. Bitcoin.org puts the distinction plainly: “A Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed, it can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds.”

There is no central Bitcoin authority that can cancel a confirmed payment or issue a conventional chargeback. Escrow or multisignature arrangements can help manage payment risk before funds are sent, but they do not undo a completed transaction.

How many confirmations are enough?
There is no confirmation count that makes reversal impossible. A higher count provides more protection, and the appropriate threshold depends on the amount, the risk of fraud, and the circumstances in which the payment is being accepted.

| Confirmations | Bitcoin.org’s stated guidance |
|---|---|
| 0 | Safe only if the payer is trusted. |
| 1 | “Somewhat reliable” for lightweight wallets; “mostly reliable” for Bitcoin Core. |
| 3 | “Mostly reliable” for lightweight wallets; “highly reliable” for Bitcoin Core. |
| 6 | Minimum recommendation for high-value transfers. |
| 30 | Recommended during emergencies to allow time for human intervention. |
These are practical recommendations from Bitcoin.org, not protocol rules or guarantees. The Bitcoin Developer Guide also calls six confirmations a rough recommendation for high-value or fraud-sensitive payments and describes the threshold as somewhat arbitrary. Neither source establishes a universal current probability that a transaction will be reversed.

Bitcoin.org says blocks arrive about every 10 minutes on average, but an average is not a schedule: a particular confirmation can take less or more time, with no guaranteed minimum or maximum. A fee that is low relative to current network priorities can also delay the first confirmation. Waiting longer for a transaction to confirm is not the same as reversing it; until it is included in a block, however, conflicting spends remain a concern.

What to do if a payment went wrong
- If the transaction is unconfirmed: check its status in your wallet and contact the recipient or payment service. Do not assume the payment is final while it has zero confirmations.
- If it is confirmed: contact the recipient promptly and request a voluntary refund. A network operator or Bitcoin support channel cannot force a return.
- If the payment involved fraud: preserve transaction details and relevant communications, and report the incident to the appropriate platform or authorities. Do not trust anyone promising a guaranteed protocol-level reversal.
- For future payments: verify the recipient and amount before sending, and consider escrow or multisignature arrangements when the transaction warrants additional safeguards.
