Verify the notice through the exchange’s official app or website, secure your account, save records, and ask verified support for written details. A withdrawal hold is not by itself proof that an exchange is insolvent—but if a formal insolvency proceeding is announced, follow its official instructions and deadlines.
Identify what is actually suspended
Trading and withdrawals are separate functions, and a failed withdrawal can have several causes. Check the exact error message and any account notice. Then visit the exchange by typing its address yourself or opening its verified app; do not rely on links in unexpected emails or messages.

| Situation | Clues to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Account-specific review | A notice visible in your account, an identity or information request, a security warning, a payment reversal, or a flagged transfer. | Secure the account, verify the request in-app, and respond through official support. |
| Time-based funding hold | The restriction appears tied to a recent deposit or a specific payment method. | Check the exchange’s current hold policy and the stated release date. A balance you can trade may not be available to withdraw. |
| Asset or network maintenance | An official notice names a token, blockchain network, or withdrawal rail. | Wait for the exchange’s official update and confirm the correct network before trying again. |
| Exchange-wide suspension | An official status notice or announcements describe restrictions affecting multiple services or customers. | Save the notices, request written updates, and monitor official announcements. |
| Insolvency or formal proceeding | A court filing or an official notice from an administrator or trustee identifies the legal entity and proceeding. | Follow the formal process and deadlines. A routine support ticket may not count as a claim. |
| Blockchain processing delay | The exchange says the withdrawal was broadcast and provides a transaction ID, but the transfer has not completed. | Check the ID on an explorer for the correct network. Contact support if the exchange cannot confirm a broadcast. |
These categories are a way to sort the problem, not a guarantee that every exchange will publish the same signals or timelines. The exchange’s specific notice and current rules matter.

Take these steps before trying again
- Verify the restriction and its scope. Check the exchange’s official status page, announcements, and authenticated account messages. Confirm whether trading, deposits, crypto withdrawals, fiat withdrawals, one asset, or one network is affected—or whether the notice names only your account.
- Secure your account. Change a reused or exposed password, strengthen two-factor authentication, review recent sessions, devices, and transactions, and report activity you do not recognize. Answer legitimate identity or source-of-funds requests only through the exchange’s authenticated process. Kraken advises users to monitor their registered email and answer documentation requests; it also warns that it will not ask for login credentials or remote access (Kraken account-restriction guidance).
- Check whether the available balance is withdrawable. Review the balance in the exact currency you are trying to withdraw, open orders, the original deposit method, and any release date shown. For example, a Kraken support page dated September 16, 2026 says certain methods can trigger a 72-hour withdrawal hold and ACH Plaid cash deposits a seven-day hold; it also explains that portfolio value may not equal the available balance in the selected currency (Kraken cash-deposit guidance). These are Kraken-specific examples, not universal rules. Check your exchange’s current policy.
- Ask support specific questions. Use the verified support channel and ask what reason applies, which assets and functions are affected, whether the restriction is account-specific or platform-wide, what information is needed, what review steps to expect, and how updates will arrive. Keep the ticket number and replies. Do not send identity documents to an address you have not verified.
- Keep a dated record. Save account statements, balances, deposit records, transaction IDs, relevant terms and disclosures, notices, and support conversations. Store them securely. If you discuss the case publicly, redact sensitive information; never post account IDs, identity documents, recovery phrases, or authentication codes.
Avoid workarounds that can cost you more
- Do not borrow, deposit more money, or trade into a volatile asset just to try to bypass a restriction.
- Do not pay a supposed “release fee” or send crypto to a recovery service. A transfer may be irreversible. Kraken advises withdrawing only to addresses you control and manage (Kraken cryptocurrency withdrawal guidance).
- Do not give another person access to your account or use someone else’s account to evade controls. A security review may be intended to protect the account, even though it can be disruptive.
- If crypto withdrawals are disabled but a cash withdrawal is available, do not assume that option exists on every platform. Follow the exchange’s written instructions and consider price and tax consequences before selling; Kraken describes this distinction in its restriction guidance (Kraken account-restriction guidance).
Escalate if the exchange does not resolve the issue
If the exchange appears to remain in operation but support is unresponsive, the next route depends on your jurisdiction, the company, and the product involved. In the United States, the SEC lists its Office of Investor Education and Assistance for questions or complaints about investments and accounts, and its Enforcement Division for reports of possible misconduct or fraud (SEC complaint and tip options). The CFPB has also documented consumer complaints involving frozen crypto accounts and withdrawal access (CFPB Circular 2022-04). A complaint does not itself guarantee access to or recovery of crypto. Crypto held at an exchange should not be assumed to have ordinary bank-deposit insurance.

Withdrawal restrictions and insolvency are distinct, though they can overlap. The CFPB’s November 2022 bulletin describes complaints about frozen accounts and notes that some platforms froze withdrawals or sought bankruptcy protection; this is historical context, not a current measure of how common failures are. If an exchange announces insolvency or a formal proceeding, identify the legal entity named in the notice and follow updates from the court, trustee, or administrator. Watch for claim instructions and deadlines. Do not rely on old articles or unofficial recovery agents for current case status.

A self-custody wallet may be useful for assets you can withdraw in the future, but it cannot unlock assets still held in a suspended exchange account. If withdrawals resume and you transfer crypto, verify the address and network, consider a small test transfer where appropriate, and keep recovery material private. Responsibility for protecting that material and choosing the right network rests with you.
