An American Express Gift Card may work on Amazon.com when you enter it as a payment card at checkout—not as an Amazon Gift Card. First check that its available balance covers the entire order total, including tax and shipping; Amazon checkout acceptance is not guaranteed for every card or purchase.
How to pay with an American Express Gift Card on Amazon

Check the card balance. Use the official Amex Gift Card balance service to confirm how much remains on the card.

Add the card as a payment card. At Amazon checkout, choose to add or select a credit or debit card. Enter the American Express Gift Card number, expiration date, and security code when prompted. If asked to choose a payment type, Amex says to select “Credit” or “Debit,” not “Gift Card.”

Confirm the balance covers the order. The available balance should be greater than the full total, including tax and shipping. AmexGiftCard.com also warns that some transaction types may require an authorization hold of up to 20% above the purchase amount, so a card with exactly the purchase total may still be declined. Submit the order. If the payment is declined, check the balance and the card details, then contact Amex using the number on the card or official Amex Gift Card support. There is no single confirmed cause for every decline.
What kind of gift card is it?
An American Express Gift Card is a prepaid card, so enter it in Amazon’s card-payment fields. An Amazon.com Gift Card is a different product: redeem it to your Amazon account and use the resulting account balance at checkout. Amazon staff guidance lists American Express prepaid credit or gift cards among payment methods on Amazon.com, but that guidance does not guarantee approval of every card or transaction. Amazon’s payment guidance also distinguishes paying with a card from using Amazon.com Gift Card balance.

Can you split the payment?
Do not count on dividing an order between the American Express Gift Card and another bank card. Amex’s cardholder agreement cautions that some online and mail-order merchants do not permit split tender, and Amex does not guarantee a merchant will allow it. Amazon staff guidance says checkout can combine one accepted credit or debit card with Amazon.com Gift Card balance, but not split payment across multiple cards. The same guidance is available in Amazon’s payment-method information.

Amex has a separate policy for buying gift cards on its own site: only specified fully registered and approved prepaid cards can be used, and single-load Gift Cards and temporary reloadable cards are excluded.
