Aston Villa’s co-owners have published personal-wealth estimates in the billions, but the available evidence does not support a like-for-like ranking against Birmingham City’s owner-side leadership. Forbes estimated Nassef Sawiris at $9.3 billion on 2 October 2026 and Wes Edens at $2.4 billion on 15 September 2026; no dependable, comparable personal net-worth estimate for Birmingham’s Tom Wagner was located.
What the published wealth estimates show
The clearest figures are for Aston Villa’s two named co-owners. They are estimates from different publications and dates, not audited statements or a combined measure of money available to the club.
| Person or measure | Published figure | Source and date | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nassef Sawiris | $9.3 billion | Forbes Europe, 2 October 2026 | Real-time net-worth snapshot |
| Nassef Sawiris | $9.6 billion | Forbes Middle East, 2026 annual profile | Annual Richest Arabs estimate |
| Wes Edens | $2.4 billion | Forbes, 15 September 2026 | Real-time net-worth snapshot |
| Tom Wagner | Not stated | No dependable comparable estimate located | No supported personal net-worth figure for this comparison |
Sawiris’s two figures should remain separate: one is an annual-list estimate and the other a dated real-time snapshot. They differ in publication format and date, so neither should be treated as a permanent or exact value. Forbes’s published net-worth figures can change with markets and other estimates.
Why the ownership structures matter
Birmingham City
Birmingham City’s control is held through Shelby Companies Limited (SCL), a subsidiary of Knighthead Capital Management co-founded by Tom Wagner. BBC Sport reported on 7 November 2025 that SCL controlled 96.64% of Birmingham City Limited, while its headline described the transaction as a completed 100% takeover. The report says Birmingham City Limited owns the men’s club and women’s team, and that Knighthead took full ownership of the ground in the transaction. Those are dated reported details, not a current beneficial-ownership register.

This structure does not make Knighthead’s assets, Birmingham City’s value or the club’s investment capacity equivalent to Wagner’s personal wealth. The available evidence does not establish a reliable personal net-worth figure for him that can be compared with Forbes’s estimates for Villa’s co-owners.
Aston Villa
Forbes identifies Sawiris and Edens as Aston Villa’s owner/controlling shareholders. The club is associated with both individuals, but their personal fortunes remain separate from one another and from the finances of the club. Companies House filing history for Aston Villa Limited records company filings and changes in significant control; it does not turn those records into a simple personal-wealth comparison.

Personal fortunes are not club value or spending power
Forbes valued Aston Villa at $1.4 billion (£1 billion) in May 2026, using enterprise value, which the page defines as equity plus net debt. That is a valuation of the club enterprise, not the net worth of Sawiris or Edens. It should not be added to either owner’s fortune or interpreted as money available for transfers or other spending. Forbes’s Aston Villa team valuation page also reports $490 million (£378 million) in revenue and -$30 million (-£23 million) in operating income for the 2024–25 season. Forbes defines that operating-income measure as before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, player trading and disposal of player registrations; it is not a measure of either owner’s wealth.

- Forbes published estimates put Sawiris at $9.3 billion on 2 October 2026 and Edens at $2.4 billion on 15 September 2026. Forbes Middle East separately listed Sawiris at $9.6 billion for 2026.
- The estimates indicate substantial published personal fortunes for Aston Villa’s named co-owners, but they do not show how much either has committed to the club.
- The evidence does not provide a dependable, comparable personal-wealth estimate for Wagner, so a numerical owner-to-owner ranking between Birmingham City and Aston Villa is not supported.
For official company records, Companies House lists Birmingham City Football Club Limited’s filing history, including accounts made up to 30 June 2025 filed on 4 April 2026. Such filings are useful for company information, but the reviewed records do not provide a complete current shareholding chain that replaces the dated BBC account or establishes Wagner’s personal net worth.
