Trading on OKX starts with choosing the right product: spot trading means buying or selling an asset, while futures and other derivatives create exposure under contract rules that can include margin, leverage, funding or expiry. For a perpetual futures order, select the contract and settings, choose an order type, enter the details, and review the resulting order or position. Availability, labels, terms and fees vary by product, region, account and app or web version, so use the live order panel and applicable account terms before placing a trade.
What does trading on OKX mean?
OKX offers several product types, and their workflows and risks are not interchangeable. The detailed walkthrough covered here is for perpetual futures; it should not be taken as a universal set of steps for spot, expiry futures, options or margin products. OKX’s trading settings guidance also warns that features and rules may not apply to every customer (How do I set up the commonly used transaction features?).
| Product | What you are trading | Important mechanics |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | Buying or selling the asset itself in the spot market. | Settlement and fees depend on the pair and account. The perpetual-futures instructions below do not establish the spot workflow. |
| Perpetual futures | A derivative contract tracking an underlying asset, rather than ownership of that asset. | No expiry date; uses funding exchanged between long and short traders. Margin, leverage and liquidation risk may apply. |
| Expiry futures and options | Derivative contracts with product-specific terms. | Expiry, settlement, order availability and fees differ from perpetuals. Check the instrument details before trading. |
Product access and settlement currency depend on the selected instrument and your account. Confirm the contract, settlement type and current terms in the platform rather than assuming all products share the same collateral or rules.
How do perpetual futures work?
OKX describes perpetual futures as contracts that track an underlying asset and have no expiry. A funding mechanism is used to support convergence between the contract price and spot price. Funding is exchanged between long and short traders; it is separate from the platform’s trading fee. The current interval, rate and payer direction vary by contract, so inspect the selected contract’s funding rate and countdown in the live instrument panel. The perpetual contract guide was updated September 3, 2026 (How do I trade perpetual futures on OKX?).

A position’s result can be affected by price movement, fees, funding and margin rules. Leverage changes the exposure relative to collateral and can magnify losses; it does not make a trade more likely to succeed.

- Open the perpetual-futures section. Use the product area for perpetual contracts, then select the contract you intend to trade.
- Check the settlement type and funds. If needed, transfer assets from Funding to Trading. Confirm which currency the contract settles in and what collateral is available.
- Choose margin mode and leverage. Select isolated or cross margin and set leverage where available. Read the contract panel’s current explanation of how the account mode treats collateral.
- Choose the order type and enter its details. Set price and amount as required by the selected order type. Check order limits and the estimated total before submitting.
- Set optional take-profit or stop-loss conditions. Review trigger conditions and execution settings; a trigger does not guarantee a fill at a chosen price.
- Review the order or position. An unfilled order is a pending instruction, not an executed position. Check order status; after execution, monitor the position details, including margin and estimated liquidation price where displayed.
- Close or reduce the position deliberately. Use the controls available for the selected contract and verify whether the closing order has executed. A submitted closing order may remain unfilled.
How do I trade with different order types?
Order types balance execution urgency against price control. OKX states: “A Market Order doesn’t guarantee the execution price, and a Limit Order doesn’t guarantee execution.” Available types and controls depend on the instrument and account. See OKX’s order-type guide, updated September 9, 2026 (How do I trade with different order types?).
| Order type | Execution trade-off | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Market | Seeks immediate execution at prices currently available, but the fill price is not guaranteed. | Liquidity, price movement and platform price or size limits can affect the outcome. |
| Limit | Sets a price or better, but may not fill, or may fill only partly. | Price control comes at the cost of execution certainty; an unfilled order is not a position. |
| Reduce-only | Intended to reduce an existing position rather than increase it. | Confirm the position and order settings. It does not guarantee execution or a particular exit price. |
Check the order panel for the available order types on your exact spot pair, margin product, futures contract or options instrument. The choice shown for one product or account mode may not appear for another.

What do margin mode and position mode change?
Margin mode affects how collateral is assigned or shared, while position mode affects how positions are represented. These settings change how exposure and available funds are handled; they do not remove the possibility of loss or liquidation.
Isolated versus cross margin
- Isolated margin: OKX’s walkthrough describes this as using designated funds for a position. Check the contract panel for how much margin is assigned and how changes affect that position.
- Cross margin: OKX describes this as using account funds according to the account mode. Shared collateral rules can mean funds beyond an initially assigned amount are relevant to the position.
Neither mode is universally safer. The amount of collateral at risk depends on the product, account configuration and live rules. An estimated liquidation price is an estimate, not a guaranteed warning point or protection against fast market moves.

One-way versus hedge mode
One-way mode and hedge mode determine how positions in a contract are managed. The exact behavior depends on the account’s current configuration and instrument. Check the position-mode setting and order panel before opening a trade, especially if you expect to hold both long and short exposure.
Useful settings, with limits
OKX’s settings FAQ describes notifications for take-profit/stop-loss triggers, a setting to display estimated liquidation price and a futures cooling-off period. These are interface or account controls, not guarantees: notifications can report a trigger, but a triggered order may not execute; a displayed liquidation estimate can change; and a cooling-off feature does not reverse a position or prevent market losses. Confirm which features are available in your account and what their current terms say (How do I set up the commonly used transaction features?).

What fees and funding costs should I check?
There is no single OKX fee rate that applies to every trader or trade. OKX says rates vary by product and fee tier. Its fee rules distinguish maker and taker fees and describe charges that may apply to opening or closing futures positions, liquidation and expiry settlement. Perpetual funding is a separate payment exchanged between long and short traders, not the trading fee. The applicable fees and funding depend on the contract, account tier and current terms (Trading Fee Rules FAQ, updated September 9, 2026).
- Check the fee information for your own account tier and selected pair or contract.
- For a perpetual, check the live funding rate, interval, payer direction and next settlement countdown.
- Consider fees on both entry and exit, plus any product-specific settlement or liquidation charges that apply.
- Do not treat an illustrative fee calculation in OKX’s FAQ as your personal rate.
What should you check before submitting an order?
- Product and instrument: Confirm spot versus derivative, the exact pair or contract, and whether it is perpetual or expires.
- Settlement and funds: Check settlement currency, available Trading balance and any required transfer from Funding.
- Order type and amount: Review whether the order is market, limit or another available type, the quantity, price and any platform limits.
- Margin and position modes: Verify isolated or cross margin, leverage and one-way or hedge mode where applicable.
- Risk controls: Review any take-profit/stop-loss triggers and estimated liquidation price, while recognizing neither ensures execution or prevents loss.
- Costs: Check current trading fees, possible settlement or liquidation charges, and perpetual funding where relevant.
- Execution status: Distinguish an open, unfilled order from an executed position, and verify the status of any close order.
- Terms and availability: Confirm the live interface and rules for your region, account, product and app or web version.
