White labeling lets a business sell an existing third-party product or service under its own brand. It can be a faster route to market than developing an offering from scratch, but it usually means less control over the underlying product and more reliance on the supplier. Whether it makes sense depends on what you can customize, who handles fulfillment and support, and the rules that apply to your product category and market.
What is white labeling?
White labeling is a sourcing and branding arrangement: one company makes a product or develops a service, and another business sells it under its own brand. Several sellers may offer the same underlying item, even if their names, packaging, prices, or customer experience differ. Shopify and Salesforce both describe white labeling this way.
The term covers more than physical goods. It can apply to software and SaaS as well as products such as coffee, clothing, and skincare. It is a practical business description, not a single legal category with rules that apply identically in every jurisdiction.
White label vs. private label vs. print on demand
These terms describe different parts of a business arrangement. White label and private label primarily describe how an offering is sourced and branded; print on demand describes a production and fulfillment method. A particular supplier may combine approaches, so ask what its terms mean in practice.

Shopify describes white-label goods as relatively quick to launch because a supplier relabels an existing item, while private-label development can take longer. Salesforce also compares the models in terms of control, cost, risk, and speed. Neither label alone tells you the exact commercial terms: confirm customization rights, exclusivity, minimum orders, stock ownership, shipping, and customer-service responsibilities directly with the provider.
What products and services can be white-labeled?
White labeling is a model, not a product category. The examples below illustrate its range; they are not an exhaustive list or a guarantee that every supplier offers the same options.

What are the benefits and trade-offs?
Why businesses choose it
- Less product development: You may enter a category without building a factory, creating a formula, or developing every software feature yourself.
- Potentially faster launch: An existing offering can reduce development work, although supplier onboarding, packaging, compliance checks, and storefront setup still take time.
- A different division of work: The supplier may focus on production or core software while your business focuses on branding, sales, and customer acquisition.
These are possible advantages, not guarantees of demand, profit, or a successful launch.
What you give up or take on
- Less control over the offering: The supplier may limit changes to ingredients, specifications, features, or packaging.
- Supplier dependence: Your ability to fulfill orders or maintain a service can depend on another company’s quality, stock, pricing, and continued availability.
- Brand risk: Customers may hold your brand responsible when the product disappoints, even if another company made it.
- Terms that vary by provider: Branding rights, exclusivity, inventory, shipping, support, and remedies for defects are not established by the phrase “white label.”
If a distinctive formula, specification, or exclusive product is central to your business, a private-label arrangement may be a better fit, though additional development can require more time and effort.

How do I start a white label business?
- Choose the customer and problem. Identify who would buy the offering and why they would choose your brand over alternatives. Do not assume the supplier’s product will create demand on its own.
- Select the category and model. Decide whether an existing white-label offering, a more customized private-label product, or a print-on-demand arrangement fits your need for control, launch speed, and fulfillment.
- Shortlist providers and inspect the actual offer. Request product or service specifications, samples or a demonstration where relevant, pricing terms, minimums, lead times, and details about what can be branded or changed. Treat named examples as starting points, not endorsements or confirmation of current terms.
- Agree responsibilities in writing. Establish who owns or licenses the brand assets and content, who holds inventory, who ships orders, who handles customer support and returns, and what happens with defects, outages, delays, or a supplier relationship ending.
- Check category and market requirements before selling. Determine which labeling, safety, privacy, advertising, or other rules apply to the specific offering and where it will be sold. A general white-label arrangement does not transfer every legal responsibility away from the seller.
- Plan the customer experience and economics. Account for the provider’s charges, packaging, shipping, returns, support, and marketing when assessing whether the offer can work for your business. No white-label model guarantees profitability.
- Launch with claims you can substantiate. Make sure product descriptions, performance statements, environmental claims, and origin claims are accurate and supported. Monitor quality and customer feedback after launch.
U.S. labeling and marketing considerations
The following points are limited to cited U.S. federal guidance and selected requirements; they are not a complete compliance review. Rules differ by category and jurisdiction, and state requirements may also apply.
Covered household consumer commodities
The Federal Trade Commission’s Fair Packaging and Labeling Act guidance summarizes three disclosures for covered commodities: the commodity’s identity, the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor, and the net quantity of contents. The FTC says the Food and Drug Administration administers the Act for foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices, while the FTC administers it for other covered household commodities. Some products may also be subject to state weights-and-measures laws.

Covered textile, wool, and fur products
For covered products, FTC guidance says the label must identify the business responsible for marketing the product in the United States or the manufacturer. The FTC’s RN FAQ explains that a qualifying business name can be used instead of a Registered Identification Number (RN); an RN does not replace the business-identity requirement. This textile-specific guidance should not be treated as a rule for every product category.
Advertising and endorsements
The FTC says truth-in-advertising standards apply to computers, software, apps, and other products or services. Environmental claims require competent and reliable scientific evidence, and U.S.-origin claims are covered by separate FTC guidance. If you use paid endorsements or affiliate promotion, disclose the relationship clearly where required; the FTC’s endorsement FAQ gives examples such as “This is an ad for BRAND” and “This video is paid for by BRAND.”

What to confirm with a provider before committing
A provider’s use of “white label” does not answer the operational questions that determine how the arrangement will work. Get clear answers, preferably in the agreement, to the points that matter for your business:
- What parts of the product, service, packaging, or interface can be customized?
- Can other sellers offer the same underlying item, and is any exclusivity available?
- Who owns or licenses branding, designs, content, and any custom work?
- Who buys or holds inventory, and who is responsible for shipping, returns, and order errors?
- Who responds to customer questions and complaints, and what support does the supplier provide?
- What quality controls, service commitments, or remedies apply if the product is defective or the service is unavailable?
- What compliance documents or product information can the supplier provide, and which responsibilities remain with your business?
- How can pricing, specifications, or service terms change, and what happens if either party ends the relationship?
Is white labeling right for your business?
White labeling is most useful when an existing offering meets your customers’ needs and your main work is building a brand, distribution, or customer relationship around it. It is a weaker fit when the business depends on product features the provider will not change, meaningful exclusivity the provider will not grant, or operational control the agreement does not provide. Compare the actual supplier terms and category requirements—not just the model’s name—before deciding.
