NFT trading means buying, selling, bidding on, or exchanging unique digital tokens recorded on a blockchain. The mechanics are straightforward, but the financial risks are not: you can lose money through price volatility, fake collections, gas fees, poor liquidity, malicious wallet approvals, or old listings that remain executable on-chain.
This guide uses OpenSea as the main example and notes where Magic Eden differs. Marketplace labels, supported chains, fees, and creator-earning rules can change, so treat the checkout, listing, and wallet screens as the final source of transaction details.
What you need before trading NFTs
An NFT is not traded through one universal command. The exact process depends on the blockchain, wallet, marketplace, NFT contract, payment token, and order type.
Before you trade, prepare a self-custodial wallet compatible with the NFT’s blockchain. It may need to hold:
The Tool Desk

- The payment asset, such as ETH, SOL, USDC, WETH, or WSOL.
- The blockchain’s native token for gas, where required.
- The NFT itself if you are selling or exchanging it.
Send funds only to the correct blockchain and wallet address. A confirmed blockchain transaction is normally irreversible, and a wallet provider or marketplace usually cannot recover funds sent to the wrong network.
Never give anyone your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key. Download wallet software only from the provider’s official website. OpenSea says it will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key.
How to verify an NFT before buying
A marketplace search result is not proof that an NFT is genuine. OpenSea is a self-service, peer-to-peer marketplace where anyone can create and list an NFT. Use this checklist before committing money:
- Open the project’s official website or verified social account.
- Copy the collection’s contract address from that official source.
- Compare the address with the marketplace listing.
- Check the creator account, collection history, ownership distribution, and recent sales.
- Inspect the token ID, traits, metadata, and transaction history.
A verification badge can help identify an account or collection, but it is not an endorsement, guarantee, or investment recommendation. Do not assume that a high floor price or large volume means an NFT is authentic or easy to sell.
How to buy an NFT at a fixed price on OpenSea
- Open the NFT’s item page and click Buy now.
- Review the Checkout window.
- Confirm the NFT, quantity, blockchain, payment token, marketplace fee, creator earnings, and estimated gas.
- Review the transaction details in your wallet.
- Approve the transaction and wait for blockchain confirmation.
You can also buy individual items from a collection page using Buy now. OpenSea’s Sweep feature allows selected items to be purchased in bulk, currently up to 50 items in one collection-page purchase. Depending on the order formats involved, the purchase may require multiple transactions or signatures.
Fixed-price purchase risks
- Another buyer may fill the listing before your transaction confirms.
- A listing can disappear or become unavailable while you are checking out.
- One transaction in a bulk purchase can fail while others succeed.
- Funds generally need to be available on the NFT’s blockchain.
- Cross-chain checkout is available for some eligible assets and supports compatible-chain native tokens, WETH, USDC, WSOL, and certain additional tokens. It does not support every token or listing type; OpenSea currently excludes Blur listings from cross-chain purchases.
Do not sign until the wallet shows the chain, token, amount, recipient or contract, and requested permissions you expect. Once confirmed, a purchase generally cannot be reversed.
How to make an offer on an NFT
To bid on one specific NFT on OpenSea:
- Open the NFT’s item page.
- Click Make offer.
- Enter the offer amount and select the duration.
- Click Review item offer.
- Complete the required wallet signatures or transactions.
OpenSea’s current default offer duration is 30 days, with a maximum of six months. Its guide lists 0.0001 ETH as the minimum offer amount, although the applicable currency and marketplace rules vary by chain and item.
Offers commonly use a wrapped native token. For Ethereum NFTs, that token is usually WETH. WETH allows a bidder to pre-authorize an offer so the seller can accept it later.
How to convert ETH to WETH on OpenSea
- Click your wallet balance in the top-right corner.
- Select Swap.
- Enter the amount of ETH to convert to WETH.
- Click Confirm.
- Approve the transaction in your wallet.
Wrapping requires a blockchain transaction and therefore may require gas. A submitted offer generally pre-authorizes funds rather than immediately transferring them. Check your profile’s Offers tab and cancel offers that no longer reflect your intentions. Cancelling an offer usually does not require gas on OpenSea, although enabling a new payment currency may require a one-time approval transaction.
How to make a collection offer
A collection offer applies to any eligible NFT in a collection rather than one particular token:
- Open the collection page.
- Click Make offer at the bottom of the page.
- Enter a WETH price or choose set to Top offer.
- Choose the quantity, if applicable.
- Optionally select a trait in the Trait field.
- Review and sign the offer.
Set the quantity carefully. Sellers can accept multiple collection offers separately, creating multiple purchases rather than one all-or-nothing transaction.
How to sell an NFT on OpenSea
You can list an NFT from your profile or its item page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
From your profile
- Open your profile.
- In Collector mode, hover over the NFT and click List item.
- In Pro mode, click select, choose the NFT, and click List item in the bottom bar.
- Set the price and listing duration.
- Review the fees and expected proceeds.
- Confirm the listing in your wallet.
From the item page
- Open the NFT.
- Switch to Sell mode.
- Click List for sale.
- Set the price and duration.
- Confirm the listing in your wallet.
If an active offer exists, the page may show Accept offer instead of the listing workflow. OpenSea’s current listing-duration range is 15 minutes to six months. The listing screen may also include options such as Reserve, Adjust for fees, Set price to floor, Listed as, and Creator earnings.
How to accept an offer
- Open the NFT’s item page or your profile.
- Click Accept offer.
- Review the net proceeds, creator earnings, and fees.
- Approve the transaction and gas fee in your wallet.
Sellers generally pay gas when accepting an offer. Buyers generally pay gas when purchasing a fixed-price listing. The exact cost depends on the blockchain and current network conditions.
How to cancel or reduce an NFT listing
Cancel a listing from the item page
- Open the NFT.
- Click Cancel listing.
- Review and approve the gas transaction.
Cancel from your profile
- Open your profile and select the Listings tab.
- Filter by Active or Inactive.
- Select the listing.
- Click Cancel listing and approve the transaction.
Lower the price
- Open the NFT and click Edit listing.
- Set the new price and listing expiration.
- Click Edit.
- Confirm the update in your wallet.
An important risk is the inactive listing. A listing can disappear from OpenSea after you sell or transfer an NFT while its original order remains fillable on-chain. If the NFT later returns to your wallet, that old listing could become active again. Cancel unwanted inactive listings, not only the listings currently visible as active.
How to trade NFT-for-NFT
OpenSea’s Deals feature allows one user to exchange NFTs with another user and optionally include WETH.
- Hover over your profile icon and select Deals.
- Enter the recipient’s username, ENS name, or wallet address.
- Select the NFT or NFTs you want to receive.
- Click Next.
- Select the NFT or NFTs you will send.
- Optionally add WETH.
- Click Next, review the proposal, and click Send deal.
A deal can include up to 30 NFTs. The accepting user pays gas. OpenSea currently states that Deals do not include an OpenSea fee or creator earnings, although some NFTs are ineligible where creator earnings are enforced through ERC-721-C.
How Magic Eden’s workflow differs
For Solana and Polygon NFTs on Magic Eden’s desktop site, the basic selling process is:
- Sign in and click your wallet address in the top-right corner.
- Open My Items.
- Select the collection and NFT.
- Click List, set a price, and confirm; alternatively open Details, set the price, and click List Now.
For bulk listings, select multiple NFTs, click List, and set either a global or individual price. If a collection offer is available, the collection page may show Instant sell for; select an NFT, click Accept offer, and confirm the transaction.
Magic Eden also offers Solana Pools, which are more advanced than an ordinary listing. A pool can use buy-side, sell-side, or two-sided strategies:

- Click Create Pool.
- Set buy and/or sell quantities and starting prices.
- Optionally target traits.
- Set the LP fee and Change By increment.
- Review the price graph.
- Click Create Pool and approve the required wallet transactions.
Creating a pool can require depositing SOL and NFTs into it. This is not a beginner-friendly substitute for a simple fixed-price sale; understand the pricing curve and deposited assets first.

NFT trading fees to calculate
Calculate your expected all-in cost and net proceeds before signing. Common costs include:
| Cost | When it may apply |
|---|---|
| Marketplace fee | Buying, selling, or minting, depending on the marketplace and transaction type. |
| Creator earnings | When the collection’s rules make them enforced or when the buyer or seller accepts optional earnings. |
| Gas | Approving, buying, selling, accepting offers, wrapping tokens, cancelling listings, or transferring NFTs where the blockchain requires it. |
| Wallet or payment-provider fee | When purchasing or swapping through a third-party provider. |
| Slippage or exchange-rate cost | When swapping tokens or using an asset whose market price moves during the transaction. |
| Bridge fee | When moving assets between blockchains. |
OpenSea’s current published schedule lists a 1% fee for selling NFTs, a 10% fee for minting an NFT in a primary drop, and a 0% OpenSea fee for swaps. Third-party provider charges may still apply. Creator earnings vary by collection, and gas is paid to blockchain validators rather than OpenSea. Check the live checkout or listing screen because fees can change.
How to judge an NFT’s price and liquidity
The floor price is only the cheapest current listing. It is not automatically the NFT’s fair value, and it may represent an undesirable trait or a listing that has little chance of attracting a buyer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Recent completed sales, not just current listings.
- The highest collection offer.
- Sales volume and the number of unique buyers.
- Owner concentration and whether a few wallets dominate supply.
- Trait rarity and trait-specific floor prices.
- Listing depth near the floor.
- Whether recent activity looks organic rather than concentrated among a small group of wallets.
- The contract address and creator’s history.
OpenSea’s Collections statistics can be filtered by category, blockchain, floor price, top offer, verification status, branded collection page, and metadata storage type. A high volume number does not guarantee genuine demand, authenticity, or the ability to exit at the displayed floor.

A buyer asks you to send money to fix a sale
Do not send funds to unlock, verify, repair, or complete a transaction. OpenSea says it will not ask sellers to send money to resolve a failed transaction and will not initiate customer-support direct messages through social media.
You receive a free NFT with a link
Unexpected NFT airdrops can contain malicious links or descriptions designed to lead you to a phishing site or dangerous signature request. Do not interact with unsolicited NFTs or follow embedded links.
Your wallet requests an unintelligible signature
Stop if you cannot explain what you are signing. Confirm the website domain, blockchain, contract, token, spender, amount, and requested permissions. A malicious approval or signature can authorize asset transfers.
Best Value
The transaction fails but gas is still charged
A failed transaction can consume gas because validators processed the attempted transaction. Gas is generally not refundable simply because the intended purchase or mint did not complete.
The NFT disappears
The collection may have been delisted, the item may have been reported as suspicious, the listing may have expired, or the NFT may have moved to another wallet. Delisting does not necessarily reverse an on-chain ownership transfer.
U.S. tax records for NFT trading
For U.S. federal tax purposes, NFTs are generally treated as property. Potentially taxable transactions can include selling an NFT for dollars, exchanging it for another digital asset, or using digital assets in a transaction.
Keep the following records:
- Purchase and sale dates and times.
- The asset used to buy and its U.S.-dollar value at the time.
- Purchase price, proceeds, gas, and marketplace fees.
- Token ID and contract address.
- Wallet addresses and transaction hashes.
- Transfers between your own wallets, so they are not mistaken for sales.
The IRS says taxable digital-asset transactions must be reported for the relevant tax year even if no payee statement is received. Individuals generally use Form 8949 and Schedule D for sales and other capital transactions unless different broker-reporting rules apply. Tax treatment can depend on your facts, so consult a qualified tax professional.

FAQ
Do I need ETH to trade every NFT?
No. The required payment token and gas token depend on the blockchain and marketplace. Eligible transactions may use assets such as ETH, WETH, SOL, USDC, or WSOL, while some chains require their own native token for gas.
Is NFT trading safe for beginners?
It can be done carefully, but it is high risk. Prices can fall sharply, liquidity may be limited, transactions are generally irreversible, and malicious approvals or fake collections can cause permanent losses. Use a dedicated wallet with limited funds and never risk money you cannot afford to lose.
What is the difference between buying an NFT and making an offer?
Buying at a fixed price attempts to complete the purchase immediately. An offer proposes a price for a set period and commonly uses a wrapped token such as WETH. The seller can accept before the offer expires, so review and cancel offers that no longer reflect your intentions.
Do I have to pay taxes when I sell an NFT?
U.S. federal tax rules generally treat NFTs as property. Selling an NFT, exchanging it for another digital asset, or using digital assets in a transaction can create a reportable taxable event. Keep detailed records and consult a tax professional about your circumstances.
The Bottom Line
NFT trading is a blockchain transaction, not a guaranteed investment strategy. Verify the collection contract, use the correct chain and token, price the full cost including gas and fees, and read every wallet prompt before signing. Keep your trading wallet separate from your main holdings, cancel stale orders, ignore unsolicited support requests, and maintain complete records for tax reporting.
