NVIDIA’s latest completed stock split was a 10-for-1 forward split. The split became legally effective after the market closed on June 7, 2024, and NVDA began trading at its split-adjusted price on June 10, 2024.
As of August 9, 2026, NVIDIA’s official materials identify that transaction as its most recent stock split. The 2026 increase in NVIDIA’s dividend was a separate corporate action—not another split.
What happened in NVIDIA’s 2024 stock split?
NVIDIA gave shareholders nine additional shares for every share they owned. That converted each pre-split share into 10 post-split shares.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| May 22, 2024 | NVIDIA announced the 10-for-1 forward split. |
| June 6, 2024, market close | Record date for determining eligible shareholders. |
| June 7, 2024, after market close | The split became legally effective at 4:01 p.m. Eastern Time, and nine additional shares were distributed for each share held. |
| June 10, 2024, market open | NVDA began trading on a split-adjusted basis. |
NVIDIA also increased its authorized common shares from 8 billion to 80 billion as part of the corporate-action process. That change allowed the company to issue the additional shares required by the split. NVIDIA said the split was intended to make its trading price more accessible to employees and investors.

How many shares did investors receive?
The calculation is straightforward:
- 1 pre-split share became 10 shares.
- 25 pre-split shares became 250 shares.
- 100 pre-split shares became 1,000 shares.
For example, if one share had been trading at $1,200 immediately before the split, its mechanically adjusted price would have been approximately $120 after the split. The investor would have owned 10 shares at roughly $120 each instead of one share at $1,200, before accounting for normal market movements.
Did the split make NVIDIA stock cheaper?
It made each individual share cheaper, but it did not make NVIDIA cheaper in valuation terms. A stock split changes the number of shares and the price assigned to each share; it does not, by itself, change the company’s market capitalization, earnings multiple, or an investor’s percentage ownership.
| Item | Effect of the 10-for-1 split |
|---|---|
| Number of shares held | Increased tenfold |
| Price per share | Reduced to approximately one-tenth |
| Total investment value | Unchanged solely because of the split |
| Ownership percentage | Unchanged |
| Market capitalization | Unchanged solely because of the split |
Any gain or loss after the transaction resulted from changes in NVDA’s market price, not from receiving additional shares mechanically.
Did investors need to buy NVDA before the record date?
For the 2024 transaction, NVIDIA’s FAQ stated that holders of record at the close of market on June 6, 2024, would receive the additional shares. It also said that selling shares on or before June 7 meant the seller would not receive the additional split shares, regardless of the eventual settlement date.

What happened in brokerage accounts?
Investors generally did not need to submit an instruction for the 2024 split. Brokers adjusted eligible accounts automatically, with the additional shares scheduled to appear and become tradable on June 10, 2024.
An account history might show an entry labelled “stock split,” “distribution,” or “corporate action.” The wording and posting time vary by broker. If the displayed share count or cost basis looks wrong, review the broker’s corporate-actions record before assuming that a trade or tax report is incorrect. This is particularly important for shares transferred between brokers, employee equity, inherited holdings, and fractional-share positions.
How were fractional shares handled?
NVIDIA said it would not issue fractional shares as part of the 2024 split. Investors who held fractional NVDA shares through a brokerage’s fractional-share program were directed to consult their broker.
The broker—not NVIDIA—may determine how a fractional position is handled. Depending on the broker’s policy, the result could involve a cash settlement or another broker-level adjustment. Check the account statement and corporate-action notice for the actual treatment.
What happened to cost basis and taxes?
A stock split generally does not create a taxable event under U.S. federal tax rules, according to NVIDIA’s FAQ. However, the treatment can differ by state, country, account type, and individual circumstances, so the company’s general explanation is not personalized tax advice.

The total tax basis generally remains the same but is allocated across the larger number of shares. For example:
- Suppose an investor owned 10 pre-split shares with a total cost basis of $1,000.
- The 10-for-1 split converted those shares into 100 shares.
- The aggregate basis would generally still be $1,000.
- The basis allocated to each share would therefore be $10, before considering later purchases, sales, or other adjustments.
Acquisition dates generally must also be carried over to the replacement shares. Investors should compare their broker’s updated cost-basis information with their own records, especially if the shares involve multiple tax lots. NVIDIA provides an IRS Form 8937 through its investor-relations FAQ for the 2024 split.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWas NVIDIA’s 2026 dividend increase another stock split?
No. The two events changed different things.
In May 2024, NVIDIA increased its quarterly dividend from $0.04 per pre-split share to $0.10 per pre-split share. After the 10-for-1 split, that equated to $0.01 per post-split share.
On May 20, 2026, NVIDIA announced an increase in its quarterly cash dividend from $0.01 to $0.25 per post-split share. That was a dividend increase, not a new split. A dividend changes cash payments to eligible shareholders; a stock split changes the number of shares and the per-share price.

How to check whether a new NVIDIA split is real
Online claims that NVIDIA is “about to split again” should be treated as speculation unless the company has made an official announcement. To verify a claim:
- Go to NVIDIA’s investor-relations site and review recent company announcements and FAQs.
- Check NVIDIA’s filings on the SEC website.
- Look for the split ratio, record date, effective date, distribution date, and trading date.
- Read your broker’s corporate-action notice rather than relying on a social-media post or an old article.
NVIDIA’s financial reports generally present historical per-share figures retrospectively adjusted for completed splits. Some older brokerage records or third-party charts may display figures differently, so check whether historical prices have been adjusted before comparing them.

- “A split creates free money.” No. The share count rises while the per-share price is adjusted proportionally.
- “The stock is cheaper after a split.” The quoted price per share is lower, but the company’s valuation is not automatically lower.
- “Every shareholder receives fractional shares.” NVIDIA said it would not issue fractional shares for the 2024 split; the broker handles fractional positions under its own policy.
- “The 2026 dividend increase was another split.” It was a change to NVIDIA’s cash dividend.
- “A future split is guaranteed because NVIDIA split before.” Past splits do not establish a schedule or guarantee another transaction.

How many NVDA shares did I receive in the 2024 split?
You received nine additional shares for every share held, so each pre-split share became 10 post-split shares.
Do stock splits increase the value of an investment?
Not by themselves. A split increases the share count and reduces the per-share price proportionally. The total investment value and ownership percentage are unchanged solely because of the split.
Is NVIDIA planning another stock split?
As of August 9, 2026, NVIDIA’s official materials identify the June 2024 transaction as its latest split. Treat claims about another split as unconfirmed unless NVIDIA announces one officially.
The Bottom Line
NVIDIA’s latest completed split was the June 2024 10-for-1 transaction. It turned each share into 10 shares without creating an immediate economic gain or changing the investor’s ownership percentage. The main practical issues are verifying broker adjustments, checking fractional-share treatment, and confirming that cost basis and tax lots were updated correctly. NVIDIA’s 2026 dividend increase was separate and does not indicate that another split occurred.
