You can use a paper card or, if you select mobile licensing for the following year, an electronic catch record card in MyWDFW or Fish Washington. Record retained catch promptly; paper cards must be returned by the applicable fish or crab deadline even if you kept nothing. A catch card does not replace a license or tell you whether a fishery is open, so check the current rules for your location, species, and date.
Who needs a Washington catch record card?
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) requires anglers to have a catch record card when fishing for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, halibut, and Puget Sound Dungeness crab. The crab-card requirement described by WDFW does not cover Dungeness crab in the coastal management area, including Grays Harbor, Willapa Bay, and the Columbia River estuary. Check WDFW’s current catch record card guidance for the applicable fishery.
The card documents harvest; it is not a fishing license and does not replace one. See WDFW’s license information for licensing requirements.
Choose paper or an electronic catch record card

WDFW says the apps can save entries without cell service and submit them automatically after connectivity returns. Confirm that the entry has submitted once you are back online. Anglers who record catches in the app do not need to mail a card at season’s end. How to record and submit your catch
If you use a paper card
- Carry the card with you while fishing.
- Record retained catch immediately, before continuing to fish or redeploying crabbing gear.
- Return the card by the deadline for that fishery, even if you did not retain any fish or crab.
If you use an eCRC
- Choose mobile licensing for the following year and use MyWDFW or Fish Washington to access the electronic card.
- Enter retained catch in the app promptly. If you have no signal, save the entry in the app.
- After connectivity returns, confirm that the entry has submitted. No end-of-season card mailing is required for catch recorded in the app.
Paper-card deadlines and mailing address
WDFW lists the following paper-card deadlines. Check the card’s instructions and current season notices for the relevant year.

WDFW’s 2026 summer crab notice directed Puget Sound crabbers to submit summer reports between September 8 and October 1, including people who kept no crab. Because season notices and deadlines are year-specific, use the current WDFW instructions for your fishery alongside the catch record card page.

For 2026, WDFW discontinued waterproof, tear-resistant license paper and allows license documents to be printed on standard 8.5-by-11-inch copy paper. A sturdy zip-top bag can help protect documents in the field; a waterproof license holder or small waterproof box is another optional way to keep them dry.

A catch card is for recording harvest. It does not establish whether a season is open or state the local limits and gear rules for your trip. Those regulations depend on species, water, and date. Before heading out, consult WDFW’s current 2026–27 Sport Fishing Rules and regulation pages for the exact fishery.

WDFW’s Voluntary Trip Report program is separate from required catch reporting. Submitting a voluntary trip report does not remove the obligation to complete a required paper card or eCRC. See WDFW’s reporting information.
