To store ADA, use a Cardano wallet to manage the keys that authorize access to your funds; ADA itself is recorded on the Cardano blockchain. For a low-risk practice transfer, use a testnet wallet and faucet test ADA—not mainnet ADA—then look up the transaction ID (TxId) in an explorer to confirm it was included in the ledger.
What a Cardano wallet stores—and who controls your ADA
A wallet does not hold ADA as a file on your computer or phone. ADA is recorded on Cardano’s ledger, while the wallet manages the keys used to view and authorize transactions. Cardano explains wallet types and key management in its wallet guide and its documentation on Cardano keys.

With a self-custody wallet, you control the recovery credentials and are responsible for keeping them safe. If you lose the private keys or recovery credentials and cannot restore them, you may lose access to the funds. Keep recovery information private and backed up securely. Never enter a recovery phrase into an unfamiliar website or send it to someone claiming to provide support.
An exchange-held balance works differently: the exchange controls the wallet keys and provides account access to you. Cardano’s wallet guide strongly discourages storing assets on exchanges. A self-custody wallet gives you control of the keys, but it also means you must protect your own credentials and approve transactions carefully.

Choose a wallet for your needs
Wallets differ in convenience, portability, how keys are stored, supported features, recovery processes, and reliance on third-party services. Check the wallet’s current official documentation for supported networks, assets, delegation features, and recovery steps before transferring funds.
| Wallet option | Key control and access | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Self-custody software wallet | You manage the keys through a software wallet on a supported device. | Convenient for everyday access, but credentials and signing activity are exposed to risks such as device compromise, phishing, theft, and user error. |
| Exchange custody | The exchange controls the wallet keys; you access the balance through its account service. | Convenience comes with reliance on the exchange rather than direct control of the keys. |
| Hardware wallet | Keys are kept on a dedicated device and used to authorize transactions through a compatible wallet app. | Optional, not required for a test transaction. It does not eliminate phishing, loss, theft, or recovery-phrase risks. Confirm the exact device and app are currently compatible before buying or connecting them. |
| Daedalus | A full-node desktop wallet that independently validates transaction history. | Its full-node approach requires more local resources than lighter wallet options, so it may be less convenient if you want quick access. |
Cardano Docs list Trezor Model T, Ledger Nano S Plus, and Ledger Nano X among hardware-wallet options. That list is not a guarantee that every device works with every current wallet app; verify compatibility with the app maker and device maker before relying on a particular setup.

Use testnet ADA for practice
A testnet transaction is the safer way to learn the send-and-verify process because it does not spend mainnet ADA. You need a wallet that supports the same test network as the recipient, plus test ADA obtained from the official Cardano faucet. Test ADA is for testing and is not mainnet value.
- Choose a test network. Cardano’s testnet documentation distinguishes Preview, with network magic 2, from Pre-production, with network magic 1. A wallet may present this choice differently from the command-line tools described in the testnet guide.
- Set up a wallet for that network. Follow the current instructions from the wallet provider. Do not assume a mainnet wallet view and a testnet wallet view use the same network just because they share an address format.
- Request test ADA from the faucet. Use the faucet for the network you selected and follow its official instructions. Do not provide your recovery phrase to claim test funds.
- Confirm the recipient is on the same network. A sender and recipient configured for different networks cannot complete the intended test transfer.
- Keep mainnet separate. Cardano’s command-line documentation uses the mainnet flag for mainnet and
--testnet-magic INTEGERfor testnets. For example, Preview uses--testnet-magic 2and Pre-production uses--testnet-magic 1. Consumer wallet controls may use labels or menus instead of these CLI options.
Send a test transaction
Wallet interfaces vary, so use the wallet provider’s current instructions for its exact controls. The general sequence is to create a transaction, authorize it with the appropriate key, and submit it to the network—the lifecycle described in Cardano’s transaction documentation.

- Open the wallet configured for the test network and choose its send or transaction function.
- Enter or scan the recipient’s Cardano address. Check that it is the intended address and belongs to the same test network.
- Enter an amount of test ADA. One ADA equals 1,000,000 lovelaces, Cardano’s smallest denomination; this conversion is not a recommended transfer amount or a fee estimate.
- Review the destination address, network, and amount before approving. If the wallet shows a fee, review it there; no single fee or confirmation-time guarantee applies to every wallet and transaction.
- Sign and submit the transaction using the wallet’s authorization process. Save or copy the TxId shown by the wallet.
If you instead send a small amount on mainnet, it is a real transfer of value, not a test. Verify the network and full recipient address before signing. Do not treat any particular amount or fee as universal.

A wallet’s “submitted” status only indicates that it sent the transaction for processing; it does not by itself prove the transaction is in the ledger. Cardano Docs explain that a TxId can be used to view transaction content in Cardano Explorer. Cardano’s tracking tools guide describes using explorers to search transaction, block, or epoch IDs and inspect block details, including confirmations.

- Copy the TxId from the wallet’s transaction details or confirmation screen.
- Open an explorer configured for the same network as the transaction. A mainnet explorer will not show a testnet transfer.
- Search for the complete TxId and open the matching transaction record.
- Inspect the record and its block or confirmation information. This is the evidence that the transaction was included in the ledger; a wallet status alone is not.
If no matching record appears, first check that you copied the TxId correctly and selected the correct network in the explorer. A transaction that has only been submitted may not yet appear as an included ledger record. Consult the wallet’s official transaction-status guidance rather than resending blindly, especially for a mainnet transfer.
