ADA staking on Cardano is delegation, not a transfer: your ADA stays in your wallet, remains spendable, and is not locked by delegating. Rewards are variable rather than guaranteed, and Cardano says the first payout typically arrives about 15 to 20 days after delegation if the pool produces blocks. Your choice of stake pool affects potential rewards; your wallet affects convenience and how your keys are protected.
What ADA staking does—and whether it locks your coins
When you delegate ADA, a certificate assigns your stake rights to a stake pool. The pool operator does not receive your ADA or gain the ability to spend it. You can spend the ADA or delegate to another pool at any time. Cardano describes these mechanics in its staking guide and delegation documentation.

Delegation is therefore different from sending coins to a custodian or committing them to a lock-up contract. It does not guarantee a return: rewards depend on block production and protocol and pool factors, and can vary from epoch to epoch.

A pool must produce blocks to earn rewards for its delegators. Cardano calculates pool rewards, then accounts for the pool’s fixed costs and margin before distributing the remaining share proportionally among delegators. Your outcome can also be affected by pool performance, pledge, saturation, and protocol parameters. Cardano explains these factors in its rewards documentation.

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Performance: A pool that misses an assigned block may earn less for that epoch.
- Fixed cost and margin: These are pool terms that affect what remains for delegators. Check how each pool states them.
- Pledge: The operator’s declared stake commitment can affect reward calculations and may inform your assessment, but it is not a guarantee of performance.
- Saturation: Once a pool passes the protocol’s saturation threshold, additional stake has diminishing reward efficiency.
Do not treat a displayed yield estimate or recent performance as a promise of future rewards. Network conditions and pool results change; smaller pools in particular may mint blocks less often and show greater epoch-to-epoch variation.
When rewards start, and what fees apply
Cardano’s operational guidance says first rewards typically arrive about 15 to 20 days after delegation, assuming the pool produces blocks. Epochs are approximately five days long. The sequence is not immediate: delegation is recorded, stake is included in a snapshot, it becomes active after a later epoch transition, rewards are calculated, and payment follows. After the initial delay, earned rewards are paid on epoch cycles and compound automatically. See Cardano’s staking guide and developer staking guide for the timing description.

The first stake-key registration requires a refundable deposit; Cardano’s developer guide currently specifies 2 ADA. The delegation transaction also incurs a network fee. The deposit is a protocol parameter and may change, so check the current guidance before registering. The fee is a transaction cost, not a pool lock-up.
How to compare stake pools
Compare pool terms and operating history rather than choosing by a headline reward figure alone. Cardano’s pool-operation guide provides context on pool operation; its delegation guide and rewards documentation explain reward considerations.

- Multiple ways of locking: you can use the matching screws to lock up the steel bitcoin wallets; You can also lock them up and hide them in other places if you still feel unsafe; The hole on the bitcoin wallet measures 6 mm/ 0.24 inch in diameter, suitable for hanging
- Review recent block production and performance, while recognizing that past results do not predict future results.
- Check the fixed cost and margin to understand the pool’s declared terms.
- Consider pledge as one signal, not proof of future returns.
- Check saturation: reward efficiency can fall when a pool exceeds its saturation point.
- If a pool advertises a charitable or community purpose, treat that as the operator’s claim and verify it independently.
You can redelegate at any time, but a change does not instantly alter the active stake snapshot. Cardano says the former pool can continue earning rewards for three additional payouts after a switch; the new pool takes over on the fourth.

| Wallet type | What it offers | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Light wallet | Faster access and convenience; typically uses hosted services for chain data. | Depends on a backend for chain information rather than validating the full chain locally. |
| Full-node wallet (Daedalus) | Downloads the chain and validates transaction history locally. | Resource-intensive and takes time and storage to sync. |
| Hardware wallet | Keeps signing keys offline and is used with companion wallet software. | Can be lost or damaged; feature and device support vary by wallet software. |
Cardano lists Trezor Model T, Ledger Nano S Plus, and Ledger Nano X as ADA hardware-wallet options. Check current compatibility with the wallet software you plan to use, including support for stake-pool delegation and governance delegation, before choosing a device. Vote delegation and withdrawing rewards
Under current Cardano guidance, a stake key needs an active vote delegation before staking rewards can be withdrawn. The guidance says you can delegate to a DRep, choose abstain, or choose no confidence. Rewards may accrue before withdrawals are enabled. Check the current instructions in Cardano’s staking guide and getting-started guide, and make sure your wallet supports the governance action you select.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before delegating
- Choose a Cardano-compatible wallet and confirm that it supports both pool delegation and the governance delegation needed for reward withdrawals.
- Review the pool’s recent performance, fixed cost, margin, pledge, and saturation; do not rely on a promised or headline yield.
- Keep enough ADA available for the network transaction fee and, if this is the stake key’s first registration, the currently applicable refundable deposit.
- Submit the delegation transaction through your wallet and allow for the epoch-based activation and reward timeline.
- Recheck the pool and wallet if circumstances change; you can spend your ADA or redelegate without a lock-up.
