One-click scans. No signup required.
Scan one item at a time, make sure it appears in the register’s item list, and review the items and quantities before paying. If a scan fails or you are not sure an item was added, stop and ask a Walmart associate to help account for it. Follow the prompts on your particular register; standard self-checkout screens and procedures can vary by store.
Use a scan-check-review routine
- Scan one item at a time. Use the register’s instructions, then check that the item appears in the on-screen list before moving on. Do not treat a beep, a change in the total, or any other single sign as proof unless the screen confirms the item was added.
- Pause when a scan is uncertain. If the barcode does not scan or the item does not appear, try again according to the register’s directions. If it still is not listed, ask an associate to help before continuing.
- Review the list before paying. Check item descriptions and quantities, not just the running total. Correct discrepancies with an associate before completing the transaction.
- Follow every checkout prompt. Depending on the items and register, prompts may involve weighing certain fruit or vegetables, entering a count, age verification for restricted goods, or an item check. Follow the screen or associate’s directions rather than assuming every lane works the same way.
- Complete payment and keep the receipt. Check the receipt if you want to confirm the completed purchase includes the items you scanned.
What to do if an item will not scan
Do not assume a failed or uncertain scan has added the item. Walmart’s Scan & Go terms direct customers who cannot scan a product to consult an associate so it is accounted for in the digital cart before checkout or on the physical or digital receipt afterward. The terms also say associates may review products and receipts and may require a rescan or recalculation; this is a possibility described in the terms, not a claim that every transaction will be checked. Read Walmart’s terms of use.

If you notice an item missing from the screen or receipt, ask an associate to help correct the transaction. Do this before leaving when possible, and follow the associate’s instructions.

Standard self-checkout means scanning items at the register. Walmart’s published step-by-step instructions in this area describe its separate app-based Scan & Go process, not a universal workflow for every self-checkout lane. Walmart does not establish one standard confirmation sound, screen indicator, or bagging-area procedure for all register models, so use the instructions shown on your lane.

Walmart+ Scan & Go steps

- Scan an item’s barcode as you add it to your cart.
- Open the cart view and verify the items and quantities.
- Select checkout in the app, go to self-checkout, and scan the QR code displayed at the register.
- Follow the register prompts and complete payment.
Walmart describes this as a Walmart+ member benefit at participating stores. Its terms say the service can vary with store circumstances, some products may not be eligible, and some produce prices may be estimates until checkout asks for a weight or count. A store may also require a digital cart transfer to a self-checkout or staffed register. Availability and prompts are not guaranteed to be identical at every location. See Walmart’s Scan & Go instructions and Scan & Go overview.
Choose the checkout route that works for you
| Option | How it works | Best fit if… |
|---|---|---|
| Self-checkout | You scan items at the register, review the list, follow prompts, and pay. The exact workflow depends on the register. | You are comfortable scanning and checking the on-screen list. |
| Cashier checkout | An associate checks out your items and can answer questions. | You are unsure about a scan, the register is giving you trouble, or you prefer a staffed lane. Walmart says cashier checkout remains available for customers who prefer it. Walmart Corporate’s checkout FAQ. |
| Scan & Go | Eligible Walmart+ members scan items in the app while shopping, review the digital cart, then scan the register QR code and pay. | The service is available at that store and you prefer scanning as you shop. Check the app and store prompts for current availability and steps. |
Keep the receipt as proof of purchase
Walmart’s Scan & Go terms say a completed purchase produces a digital receipt or, in some cases, a printed receipt from the register. Keep the receipt until you have confirmed the transaction is complete and the items are accounted for.
