To run your own Ethereum validator, you need at least 32 ETH, a connected computer running Ethereum node and validator software, and the ability to maintain it securely and reliably. You can also stake through a service or pool, sometimes with less ETH, but those routes add provider, custody, smart-contract, fee, or redemption risks. The right choice depends not just on the amount you can stake, but on who controls the keys and how you can withdraw.
Choose how you want to stake
Ethereum staking is part of the network’s proof-of-stake system. Validators perform duties using execution, consensus, and validator client software. The main routes differ in their ETH threshold, who operates the validator, and how much control you retain.
| Route | ETH threshold and operation | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Home or solo validator | At least 32 ETH for a validator activation deposit; you operate a connected node and validator software. | You participate directly and control your keys, while taking responsibility for hardware, security, uptime, and maintenance. Ethereum.org: Ethereum staking and Home stake your ETH. |
| Delegated staking or staking as a service | Generally uses a 32 ETH validator deposit, while a service operates the node. | You add provider, security, regulatory, fee, and service-process exposure. Who controls the withdrawal credentials affects your ability to recover stake independently. Ethereum.org: Delegated staking. |
| Pooled or liquid staking | May allow participation with less than 32 ETH. Some pools use smart contracts and receipt tokens; other products may be custodial or offchain. | Can reduce the operating burden and may provide a tradable receipt token, but adds structure-specific custody or contract risk, fees, liquidity considerations, and redemption rules. Ethereum.org: Liquid and pooled staking. |
A pool is not the same as native protocol support for a smaller solo validator deposit. Ethereum.org also says that inclusion on its pool list is not an endorsement.
Compare control, not just the minimum
Before choosing a route, establish who holds the validator signing keys and withdrawal credentials, who runs the hardware, whether a custodian or smart contract is involved, what fees apply, and how redemption works. Ask what happens if the operator or service stops operating. These details determine both your day-to-day responsibilities and your recovery options.

What a home validator requires
- At least 32 ETH: this is the solo validator activation deposit. A pool may accept a smaller contribution, but that is a different arrangement.
- A connected computer: it must run the Ethereum software needed for validator duties.
- Three client roles: execution, consensus, and validator software work together in proof-of-stake operation. Ethereum.org’s proof-of-stake overview explains the software roles.
- Operational skills: you need to maintain the system, protect credentials, apply updates, and keep the validator available.
The official guides establish these categories, but do not support a universal computer model or hardware specification. Requirements depend on the client setup you choose.
Set up a solo validator carefully
- Prepare a dedicated, connected computer. Choose hardware for the client configuration you intend to run, rather than relying on a generic minimum specification.
- Install and maintain the clients. Set up execution, consensus, and validator clients, and learn how to monitor and update them.
- Test before committing ETH. Ethereum.org advises: “Solo validators are expected to test their setup and operational skills on the testnet before risking funds.” See the official solo staking guide.
- Create validator credentials and verify withdrawal details. Carefully check the credential type and the withdrawal address. Follow the current Ethereum Staking Launchpad validator FAQs; credential configuration can be difficult or impossible to change later.
- Deposit at least 32 ETH to activate the validator. Do this only after you understand how the validator will be operated and how withdrawals will be directed.
Understand credentials, rewards, and withdrawals
Withdrawal credentials determine where stake and eligible rewards can be sent and whether the validator’s balance compounds. Ethereum’s withdrawal guidance, updated August 17, 2026, describes two credential types:

- Type 1: the effective balance is capped at 32 ETH. Balance above that amount is periodically swept to the designated withdrawal address.
- Type 2: the compounding credential permits an effective balance up to 2048 ETH. Rewards can remain in the validator balance and compound. Partial withdrawals below that upper threshold require an execution-layer transaction and gas.
These are protocol rules, not a promise of a particular return. The withdrawal address is a critical destination, so verify it before depositing and understand who controls it if you use a service.
Leaving a validator is not an instant cash-out
A solo validator must submit a voluntary exit and then wait until it becomes withdrawable and its balance is processed. Timing varies with network demand. With a pool or service, redemption can also depend on that provider’s process and available liquidity. Review those mechanics before staking rather than assuming you can access ETH immediately.

Risks to weigh before staking
Downtime and operating mistakes
If a validator is offline, it can miss rewards and incur small ETH losses. Client or configuration mistakes can also disrupt validator duties. This is distinct from slashing: ordinary downtime is not the same as provable misconduct.
Slashing
Signing conflicting blocks or other provable violations can result in slashing, loss of part of the stake, and forced removal from the validator set. Protect signing credentials and avoid running configurations that could cause the same validator keys to sign incompatible duties.

Keys and withdrawal control
Signing credentials let a validator perform its duties; withdrawal credentials determine where funds go. Losing or misusing either can have serious consequences. With a provider, confirm whether you or the provider controls withdrawal credentials: if the provider does, you may lack an independent protocol-level recovery route.
Intermediary, contract, and liquidity exposure
Delegated services differ in solvency, security, regulatory status, custody, fees, and processing terms. Pools differ in transparency, smart-contract design, custody, and redemption. A liquid-staking receipt token can trade or behave differently from the underlying ETH, and a requested exit or redemption may take time.
